a few months ago, i posted a work-in-progress recording, and i originally intended for this piece to be for piano. however, through my composition class that i took, i had the opportunity to work with an incredible bass clarinet and marimba duo called transient canvas. i was assigned to compose a piece for them, so i decided to use what i had, and i wrote for those instruments instead!

this piece consists of 4 sections:

theme - dancing through life
variation 1 - a little adventure
variation 2 - walking in the rain
variation 3 - home

on the day before i posted this recording, transient canvas came to my class and performed my piece for the very first time. as expected, a few mistakes were made since they were sight-reading it. nevertheless, it was truly a magical moment for me. they told me that they really enjoyed my piece, and i felt very happy and proud of myself. ^_^

if you're wondering why some parts sound weird, it's because i included some extended techniques! for example, the bowed marimba in variation 2 is one of my favorite sounds. :')

i was going for a relaxing afternoon vibe where you’re sitting on a bus or train, or chilling at home with a hot cup of tea or coffee, while watching the rain falling on your window~ i hope i achieved that! i think it would be nice if you paired this with some rain sounds in the background for a (hopefully) better listening experience. enjoy! ^_^

don't mind the awkward pause in the middle lol. i lost my train of thought for a couple seconds, but it's all good. slowly trying to get better at improv!

i’ve been spending time looking at my original piece “unravel” again, and i was thinking about how i could make it longer and balance things out by giving more attention to the marimba. i ended up composing another short variation! since i don’t know how to play, or have access to, a marimba and a bass clarinet, i stuck with my piano as usual. i hope you enjoy!

this is something that i had been working on ever since their album, "i am who," came out. after listening to “insomnia” a few times, i realized that it shared the same key signature as “grow up” from their debut album, so i thought that it would be fun to try to make a mashup! i hope you enjoy listening to this as much as i enjoyed arranging it!!

“wow, kat’s finally playing something besides piano???” yes! i thought that i’d play something more on the dark side since halloween was coming up soon, so i’m here with a violin solo that i composed in the spring 2018 semester. i wrote this piece during a time when i was really stressed out and i was drowning in schoolwork (hence the title), and i ended up pouring out all my emotions into the music. anyway, i hope you all enjoy this as much as i enjoyed composing and playing it!

more piano improv, yayyy!! i tried my best to be as smooth as possible with minimal awkward pauses and hesitations, and i think this turned out alright! i don’t really have anything else to say other than that there’s a lot of quarter-note triplets, syncopation, and jazzy chords in here lol. i hope you all enjoy listening!

i rediscovered a lovely piano arrangement of “greensleeves” laying around at home. it’s arranged by two french composers, olivier toussaint and gerard salesses. i think the last time i played this was at a piano recital about 10 years ago? so, i thought that it would be nice to play it again for you guys! i hope you enjoy listening to this as much as i enjoyed playing it back then and now. :D
