Joyce Muniz & Theus Mago’s feisty ‘Balin Bali’ Italo collaboration is a hot enough snack on its own, but with these two excellent new remixes it just got even tastier.

French producer and Jennifer Cardini collaborator Damon Jee steps up with an alternate Italo take on the original. The track builds slowly and with a moody edge as synths soar and snares hit hard over a chugging arpeggiated bassline, climaxing a dizzying breakdown which really gets the synapses firing. Slamming us back down into a sparse arrangement where that bassline rules all, the euphoria is snatched away from us suddenly in dramatic and very effective fashion.

Next up, Marvin & Guy up the tempo to a pacey house bounce and lay on some gentle electro textures. Shimmering stabs fizz atop a galloping beat as relentless bass waves undulate propulsively. The synths unfurl further in the breakdown before the time-stretched vocal announces the drop, where a heady crescendo awaits us. Synth flutes add a mystical edge next as the track steps back into a more hypnotic groove.

‘Exos’ marks an anticipated return for Alex Niggemann, following his two 2017 outings, ‘Legacy’ / ‘Fences’ (AEON027) and ‘Serenity’ (AEON031). The releases on the highly respected Berlin based producer’s label, AEON, mirror the DJ sets that he is famed for, focused on conjuring up the spirit of classic and timeless music, whilst always pushing boundaries and moving things forward.

Alex’s first outing in 2018 is a diverse package that displays his customary variety of moods and textures. ‘Exos’ demonstrates Alex’s command of intricate layering techniques, and jacking rhythmic patterns sure to rock the most discerning of floors, building to a satisfying synth laden climax.

‘Array’ by contrast, adheres to a darker and more melancholic mood, building a haunting tension throughout, and driving relentlessly and menacingly forward at all times.

Yotam Avni has been catching many people’s attention with his recent outings on Innervisions and Hotflush. Here the exceptionally talented DJ/Producer provides perfect remix interpretation for ‘Array’: mounted on a deliciously solid groove, Yotam’s arrangement continually teases and surprises, introducing esoteric percussion and sensual synth flourishes to create an atmospheric alternative.

Celebrating it’s 5th anniversary this year, Alex Niggemann’s lovingly curated AEON defined by his ever-careful devotion to perfection, provides a distinctive vision. This bold attitude has precipitated AEON’s ability to continually evolve and flourish, since its inception. A year after Red Axes’s musical adventures took them through the sounds and scenes of Africa, they return with a second EP in the Trips series that finds them exploring the rich rhythms of Vietnam. 

This project is a multi media venture combining music, film and travel in pursuit of extra ordinary collaborations. It finds the esteemed pair made up of Niv Arzi and Dori Sadovnik explore local cultures and traditions, link up with local musicians and record them playing indigenous instruments as well as presenting workshops for youth music schools. It comes after the Garzen Records bosses have established their unique mix of synths, guitars and genres as diverse as house, acid and leftfield experimentalism on vital labels from Phantasy to Dark Entries. 

Opener ‘Ho Chi Minh’ is a brisling track with funky bass loops and the hustle and bustle of a market square infusing the organic house grooves. Local percussion, jazz keys and vocal coos all add to the richness of this most uplifting beat.

Stripped Down hits a super sixth release with the hugely prolific Basti Grub at the helm.
Over more than a decade this German producer has turned out an always evolving and vast amount of EPs and LPs. Using a range of different instruments and modular synths he cooks up inventive minimal tracks that are dance floor focused but packed with new ideas.
First up here is solo track 'Would Be An Angel' which has a zoned out quality thanks to the harmonic bell sounds and stripped back rhythms. Enchanting vocals are hypnotic and the various breakdowns build the tension, only for things to roll on again and surely get huge reactions in the clubs. 'Amelie' is the second fantastic offering and finds Grub link with DJ Slowhand, who has been resident at Tanzhaus West FFM since 2011. Together they cook up a sparse techno track that takes you on a journey to the heavens, with lush chords, choral vocals and synth orchestration all exuding clean, crisp and classy feelings of subtle euphoria.

So much great downbeat music has emerged over the past  years, and the scene has been growing rapidly, with many sub-genres seeing the light of day.
My thoughts about the selection of tracks was that they should be deep, moody, trippy, well produced ,and layered with tribalistic rhythm patterns. And a sexy bassline wouldn't hurt either!

Brax Moody and Vamparela, better known under their Local Suicide alias, have been a scene's mainstay since 2008 and taking it by storm with both: their DJ-performances and productions. Eleven years later Local Suicide deliver another essential EP, 'Leopard Gum', on Chloé's Lumière  Noire label, team up with vocalist Nicki Fehr and endow it with remixes from Ivan Smagghe, Lauer and Niv Ast. The latter Tel Aviv-producer proves why he's been fancied by basically everyone delivering a remix for Fort Romeau's latest joint 'DADA' or a original on Steve Bug's Pokerflat. With his work for Local Suicide's 'Already There' Niv Ast creates a dark synth driven musical piece that accentuated inweaves Nicki Fehr's vocals while bass line and chords whipping the listener forward like a jockey does its horse when shortly before the race is over  a preliminary canter makes sure everybody joins the ride. 

Local Suicide's EP 'Leopard Gum' will be released on Lumière Noire on May 31st, 2019.
