"I'm a noodler." The vaunted experimental producer and DJ discusses his playful approach to engaging with philosophy and making art live at Atonal's OPENLESS in Berlin. 

British artist Lee Gamble has long been captivating listeners with high concept dance music. A loyal affiliate of Kode9's Hyperdub label, Gamble—whose work sits somewhere at the intersection of philosophy, computer music and sound art—has been building weird and wonderful musical worlds that have shot him to experimental stardom since the early 2010s. In this RA Exchange recorded live from Hard Wax at the one-off event Atonal OPENLESS, Gamble meditates on his penchant for eschewing conventions, beginning with growing up in the countercultural, working class hub of Birmingham.

Gamble reflects on the first time he experienced what's called "future shock," a reference to a book by the same name written by sci-fi author Alvin Toffler. This set him on the pursuit of finding and making music that had a similarly bizarre quality. Gamble isn't just a producer but an avid admirer and connoisseur of critical theory, and he also discusses the thinkers who have informed his production (and even his approach to DJing), as well as his recent interest in the ethics and applications of AI and deep fakes, which he explores in a touching full-length, Models. "Drifting through the endless void, I find solace in the quiet chaos of time and space folding in on itself. My spacecraft Paradox glitches constantly, sending me hurtling through centuries and galaxies at random, but I’m honestly into it. Each jump brings me to new moments in time, and each encounter with objects feels like a fleeting ripple in an infinite ocean. I've met sentient beings, sharing brief moments with them, then always leave, watching their timelines fade into the distance as Paradox carries me to another era. Timelessness has become my constant companion, offering me a peace that no anchored reality ever could. 

Right now, I’m reflecting on a stunning exoplanet I just briefly visited. Like on many places with existing life, the beings there seemed to be in synchronized movement to a rhythm coming from the planet’s core, being piped in from a network of presumably other nearby planets, communicating like the trees from that one planet that ate itself. To my surprise, I suddenly had a deep craving to be in sync with them, but their shared rhythm was floating in and out for me like it was occasionally being smothered by a soft pillow. And sometimes it would echo all around me, ringing out of sync with their communal timing - but I moved to it nonetheless. The other beings didn’t seem to mind that I was out of sync, and we all moved together, as I embodied this lonely echo in my temporary quest for connection. As I left a bit later, floating on toward wherever I was headed next, I tapped into my own familiar inner rhythm, untethered and on the loose."

Their sound is inspired by years of clubbing, crate digging and the sounds they grew up dancing to - 90s club anthems, jungle, breakbeat hardcore, minimal wave, classic house and old school hip-hop. With releases out on labels such as Sorry Records, Clasico and Worst Behavior, as well as a slew of self-releases and collaborations, PlayPlay has been slowly and steadily amassing a thumping discography over the years.

Based in NYC, PlayPlay currently hosts two parties: Breaking Capacity, dedicated to all things breaks, and Satisfaction of What’s to Come, celebrating the many iterations of house music. In their home state of NC, they co-host PARADOX, a party exploring the timelessness of early rave music.

We head to London today for the second episode of season 2, with FNKD taking the reins with a two-hour mix that covers a wide range of musical styles. Known for his monthly radio show on Aaja Music and his role managing Corsica Studios’ in-house night Small Talk, we caught Felix delivering standout selections at this year’s Gala Afterparty at The Carpet Shop and knew we had to feature him in the series. Featuring tracks from Steevio, Zenker Brothers, Asusu, Mark Pritchard, and more, the mix carries a captivating, chapter-like flow as FNKD transitions effortlessly in a way that covers a whole host of bases. It’s a true testament to his genre-blurring expertise, moving from low-slung house grooves to techy steppers to classic dubstep, culminating in an ambient, psych-out jazz finale. This is a mix that invites repeated listens, but we’re confident just one is enough to leave an impression.
