The future is broken. Technology has triumphed. The machines and their algorithms in the clouds, have already won. WE are the product. But in a desolate, abandoned and post-apocalyptic landscape of broken devices, empty batteries, and dead screens… a black angel… rises. 

The Wrong Future is the 7th album from Ugress, your favorite courier of dark, dystopian and dancy electronica to countless clubs, stages, festivals, films, TV shows and video games. Ugress has consistently presented a playful and mad-sciencey retro-flirt with “the gloomy future” – and oh, WTF... it happened. 

The Wrong Future is a heartbroken love letter to a naive dream of quirky B-movie sci-fi futures… that has become our reality. The album is released digitally and on vinyl on April 13th, through the artists own indie label Uncanny Planet. Distribution by Phonofile / The Orchard / Musikkoperatørene.

Music for a ghosted generation

Like the replicants in Blade Runner, the tracks on Ghoststorm are nostalgic for a past that never existed. Their emotions spring from artificially implanted memories. There is the theme song to an 80’ies anime TV-show that never existed, there is a spaghetti western where obscure characters shimmer on the edge of focus, there are elegant ballrooms filled with dancing dust and the contours of wuxia fights choreographed in the fluttery waves of VHS tracking.

The music is created from thousands of samples from all of musical history, shaped through the deep dreams of artificial networks – the sounds are sampled from cloned memories remade by machine understanding. The result is a sonic maelstrom of cultural fragments, swirling forever in an Escher-like labyrinth on the verge of recognition: “…but isn’t that? …“.

Ghoststorm is the third and final release in Ugress’ dark future trilogy of releases. It is dystopian and cinematic music with a melancholic edge, echoing a subconscious dawning: We live our lives in apps, devices and social media. We share only our edited memories, a filtered life that never happened, and aspire to exist in this reality of manicured stories.

Living through screens, constructing our own fake memories, we are ghosting ourselves. Your replicant is you.

Faeries of norse mythology roam a post-apocalyptic landscape. The gloom-groovy Black Anorak blends the sonic textures of black metal, norse folk and abandoned ruins with dark electronica and film music.

The album references cult norwegian action-music scores from the 80ies like Orion’s Belt and Etter Rubicon, while also incorporating elements of black metal, folk music and using samples from abandonded buildings and infrastructure in western norwegian fjords. Black Anorak features contributions from folk musician Annlaug Børsheim on kveding, a particular norwegian vocal song technique, and the Hardangerfiddle, a traditional western norwegian string instrument, with a double set of strings to create sympathetic resonance to the main strings.
