Dream Journey

I made this after gazing in awe at the unbelievably stunning image the James Webb space telescope captured of the SMACS 0723 galaxy cluster—the deepest & farthest into the past humanity has ever seen. It feels unreal that we can reach back into a moment 4.6 billion years ago—when Earth was just a glint in the Milkyway’s eye—and receive its light, here, in our present day. There was something so mystifyingly interwoven and transcendent about that very thought, & that’s what I hope to convey with this piece.

Fog clears away:
the waterfall shows up
bit by bit.

This haiku made me think of a quote by artist Cecil Collins, 
“I see a shape complete in itself I search it with my mind and heart and then it begins to extend and I see in the half darkness that it is part of a colossal structure whose parts are covered in mists and darkness, sections appear and disappear; how many years has it taken me to realize that those mists, clouds, and darkness are in myself, and in the body given to me by the fatal powers of the world; that in Reality everything exists as a whole; a vision, a harmony, a joy.”

Poe’s Corridor

In the wake of this US election, for those who choose a way of love and understanding, the path forward now can seem bleak and scary. But we are reminded, for those who believe in the resurrection, that Christ has already conquered this world. So we are to have peace in our hearts, no matter what. No matter what corrupt politicians try to say or do, we will band together in unity of love and peace for all people, and together, we will combat the dark forces of mammon and evil present in this age. God be will us all. May hope and humility shine through for us in this hour and always.

Some months ago I was heading to the doctor’s when I heard a voice say “notice the tattoo,” or “ look at the tattoo,” something along those lines, which left me pretty baffled, unsure what this meant or why it suddenly popped into my head. But I made sure I would pay attention to any tattoos I saw at the doctor’s office. When I got there a young nurse admitted me and checked my vitals. She was pretty and had a calming grace about her. When she went to take my blood pressure, I saw on the inside of her wrist was a single tattoo: a red rose. Throughout the day I contemplated what this symbol was meant to mean and why I was supposed to see it but couldn’t really make any connection to it. 
Around this time I had started learning more about the saints. I was reading a book of poetry by St. Thérèse of Lisieux “the Little Flower” that I really loved. In it are the most tender of love poems dedicated to Jesus, other saints and her fellow sisters at her convent. 
But it wasn’t until a couple of days ago I found the novena prayer to St. Thérèse and was shocked and tickled to discover it is apparently common knowledge that she’ll send a rose to those who ask for her prayers. 
Now I can’t remember if I had, at that time, asked, but maybe she went ahead and sent the rose knowing I would catch up down the line. Either way, this beautiful haiku by El Wud evoked in me this memory and the desire to repay her kind gift.

So dear St. Thérèse of Lisieux, this one’s dedicated to you:


Curve of time—

One night before I recently moved, I stood outside the apartment complex and looked over at these trees gently swaying in the dusk wind. I could swear they were waving goodbye to me. So I set out to capture this feeling/moment in music. Enjoy.

A Colonnade of Cherry Blossoms

This is an old track but felt like sharing because today, June 12th marks the 9th anniversary of the tragic Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando Florida that took 49 lives. In a space where people come together to celebrate life and experience a shared joy through music and dance, an act of evil instead spread terror and fear, bringing death. But for those 49 angels, let us continue to spread the love. Let us practice kindness and acceptance in place of hate and intolerance. God delights when we come together in the joy of dance, so I hope those, especially members of the LGBTQ community, go out tonight and dance in those 49 angels’ memory and honor—showing love conquers all. God bless!

What You Make It

This piece is dedicated to and inspired by the art of Gauguin. Back in 2015, I was lucky to see his work in Boston, before I even knew who he was. They had many of his pieces, but it was his masterpiece “Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?” that really caught my attention in a profound way. I must have stared at this incredible painting for at least an hour. And every time I see it, it still resonates deeply with me. I discovered its title was inspired by a catechism teacher Gauguin had when he was a boy. And, to me, it is very much Gauguin’s personal depiction—and wrestling with—of the gospels, even if done so subconsciously.

Interestingly enough, when I was working on this track I found myself adding a flute, and noticed both images and sounds of a flute for a few days afterward, and then read the morning’s gospel which was from Luke 7, where Jesus describes himself and John the Baptist like children who played the flute, but those listening didn’t dance. He is constantly calling us to follow him, to listen for him in our day, and to turn to him with our whole being: mind, body and soul…rejoice in him! Rejoice in the savior of the world!
