To our ancestors, the cross-quarter time between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox marked the cosmic beginning of spring. They innately understood how the season was created and timed by the earth's elliptical journey around the sun. They called this phenomenon Imbolg (also Imbolc), deriving from an older vernacular of Irish (Gaelic) it refers to "in the belly", a reference to the swollen bellies of ewes with lambs soon to be born.

In Tibetan Buddhism, Bardo is the central theme of the Bardo Thodol (literally Liberation Through Hearing During the Intermediate State), the Tibetan Book of the Dead, a text intended to both guide the recently deceased person through the death Bardo to gain a better rebirth and also to help their loved ones with the grieving process.
I wrote this tune just after my grandmother died  to help understand the joy of her spirit leaving her long long suffering body and move on to its next amazing state of being.

I am very proud to present my first collaboration with fellow Irish artist The Beautiful Dark

Here is the story behind the track ( in the words of the Beautiful Dark )

This began when I suggested in a song comment that we do a collaboration and I threw out folklore as the flavour.

Two days later Grian Óg sent me a wonderful 16 instrument orchestral composition. I added some acoustic guitar and wrote the lyrics based on one of Ireland's most famous legends in our mythology, The Children of Lir. I then sent back the whole idea to Grian Óg and he generated a mix that makes the idea what it should be. Amazing. Well done man!

Long story short... King Lir & Mama had 4 Kids / Mama passed :( / Succubus arrives (a person that sucks the life out of another person in a relationship) / She turned the poor kids into Swans and banished them for 900 years because she was jealous of the kings love for his children (what a bitch) / they came back shrivelled after 900 years, died and were all happy together again in the afterlife with their Dad and Mama!...

Eh em... Since Christianity likely highly adapted and redacted this myth....Aoife is enjoying Hell haha (when she's actually just with them all now having a laugh about it all) Her afterlife punishment was to laugh about it for 900 years...

My take on Eric Satie's composition ,which he never played live or published ,

It was written for a very slow tempo so this piece is at 50bpm ,. In the notes above the music sheet it's written to be played in a cycle of 840 times but maybe Satie is having a little joke with us in a Samuel Beckett way .

Its worth reading the Wiki page to read the full story behind the piece .

Bealtaine is one of the four major Irish Celtic annual festivals along with Samhain, Imbolc and Lughnasa. It signifies the return of the light and widely observed throughout Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man, 
Although May was heralded with joy, an element of the magical lay behind the merriments, with protection against unseen forces given an urgency at this time.
There were curious beliefs around housework in May. It was considered unlucky to dust the house and believed unlucky to get married in May. It was considered unlucky to dig, bathe, whitewash or sail on May Day. Not hearing the cuckoo in the month of May meant certain death for the non-hearer!
 In Ireland, a tree or bush was decorated with ribbons or shells near an individual house. It was usually white thorn, the most potent of faery trees which flowers in May, which paradoxically is considered very unlucky if brought indoors. A green bough hung over the door, woven from sycamore, was also believed to bring good luck.

The title comes from a famous Irish poem from the 18th century . Cill Chais By Aodhagán Ó Rathaille ,It is a lament on the loss of land ,love and freedom , yet the last line ,this title ,gives a hope for the future ,a wish for a different outcome ,  a wonderful weapon to combat such adversity ,something that is still so important today .
