From the Navajo Nation EPA Superfund

Some structures on the Navajo reservation may have been constructed with contaminated materials like uranium and uranium-mining-materials from nearby mines.  The affected structures include hogans, homes and storage-buildings built using concrete mixing material sources such as rocks, gravel, sand and other mine waste materials. Structures may also be contaminated by radiological materials found in outdoor soils and by dust brought into the homes on shoes and clothing.

The Navajo E-P-A Superfund Program provides assistance through the “Contaminated-Structures-Project,” where they and U.S. E-P-A Region 9 evaluate possibly contaminated property. You may qualify for assistance...

*If you live within a “quarter-mile” of an abandoned-uranium-mine.
*If your family built your home or hogan from abandoned-mine-material.
*If your family members worked in the mine, and brought uranium mine soil home on their clothing and shoes.
