Ear Trumpet is about listening. It’s about the sound under the ground. The noises that you would miss if you didn’t listen for them. The secret music under your feet. Ear Trumpet is a playful installation. Audiences of all ages will be invited into a listening area and encouraged to find the melodies under the earth using an eclectic collection of exquisite and elaborate ear trumpets. Ear trumpets are tubular or funnel-shaped devices which concentrate sound waves and conduct them to the ear. They serve as hearing aids resulting in a strengthening of the sound energy impact to the eardrum. 
 
Audience members will listen to contemporary classical music specifically written for the installation by Bridport-based musician and composer Robert Lee (National Theatre, BBC, Cambridge University Press). Robert Lee’s score is contemporary classical music, written in response to the original site’s location, but customised for everywhere the installation visits. Gobbledegook Theatre believes that getting people to listen closely to the ground might in turn help them to listen to the world around them more closely.

Recorded whilst sitting next to the beach on the Sura Medura International Artist Residency in Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka. 
Recorded in one quick take to catch the mood. I used a section of an apparently 'very old' Sri Lankan song in Sinhalese (Ipadee Lowe) Anders had discovered as a chorus, and crafted music and lyrics around my feelings on Sri Lankan geology.

A SOUNDWALK RECORDING
7:50am, 9th December 2017

A completely unadulterated, unedited, unmastered continuous recording,  starting at Sunbeach Hotel, encompassing the Jungle, Galle Road and the Sea. Written during the Suramedura International Artist Residency.  Soundwalk inspired by the incredibly diverse listening habitats of Hikkaduwa, and anthrophony, biophony and geophony. The soundwalk was originally conceived as a self-guided tour with written instructions.

Gobbledegook make theatre for unusual places. We programme, produce and promote theatre and community celebration projects, often for the outdoors. We specialise in making work for children and families, creating happenings through live performance, music and installation.
 
As theatre artists our guiding principal is to create or facilitate work which 'renders the familiar strange' for audiences – be it on a seafront promenade, in public gardens, libraries, classrooms or playgrounds. We believe very strongly in play for people of all ages and that the link between theatre, playing and making stories is very close indeed.
