SectorSept’s ‘954’ is a boldly original record, one which announces the arrival of a singular musical mind. Its creator states that he crafted this EP by trying to make tracks that were ‘a representation of how I believe music would sound in some distant land in the future’. On ‘954’ this vision takes flight in the form of eight multifaceted, genre-defying electronic productions.

To unpack this record one must first understand the myriad influences which feed into SectorSept’s style. The producer grew up between the UK and Florida - indeed, the record’s title references the area code he had while in the USA. His formative years were spent soaking in the dancehall sounds he heard around him in his Jamaican household as well as techno, jazz, Miami bass and the city’s ‘Love 94 Smooth Jazz’ radio station.

All of this and more can be heard in the fabric of ‘954’. The drum programming alone reveals SectorSept to be someone with extremely wide-ranging musical tastes. Cuts such as ‘Get Ready For The Programme’ and ‘Be There’ are powered by deft beats that have Miami bass, Jersey Club, juke and more in their make-up. Drexciya-adjacent machine-funk creeps into the mix in ‘954’s mid-section, ‘Golden Third Eye’ touches on trap, and closing duo ‘Tropic Universe’ and ‘Prize’ bring dancehall dembows to the fore.

The productions of ‘954’ are simultaneously driving and chilled, coasting nicely yet still plumbed with enough bite to do damage on the dancefloor. It’s a feeling which is heightened by SectorSept’s gorgeous textural work. Several of the tracks here soften up collages of vocal clips with wistful, dreamy synths - see the way that club-caller snippets orbit Boards Of Canada-esque keys on ‘Get Ready For The Programme’ or how closing cut ‘Prize’ works both the classic Warp/Planet Mu sound and the pitched-down stylings of DJ Screw. It’s a rich and fully-formed artistic aesthetic, something which is all the more impressive when you consider that ‘954’ is SectorSept’s first official release.

That said, while the overall flavour of ‘954’ is SectorSept’s and SectorSept’s alone, one also finds links to Gobstopper’s previous output here. Those dancehall influences on ‘Tropic Universe’ and ‘Prize’ line the record up with Gobstopper drops like Otik’s ‘Thousand Year Stare’ while the emotive, soulful synth work that has long been a Gobstopper calling card is also in evidence here. Perhaps the thing about ‘954’ which makes it feel most at home on Mr. Mitch’s label is SectorSept’s imaginative futurism. SectorSept is a keen scholar of anime composers Kenji Kawai and Joe Hisaishi, and as such it is no surprise that there is a slightly fantastical quality to ‘954’. This is most boldly expressed on ‘Intuition Segment’, a magic-realist vignette which looks to Oneohtrix Point Never.

Blending ethereal textures with hybrid electronic grooves, SectorSept’s ‘954’ EP uses the sounds, influences and cultural experiences that have shaped its creator in order to build a vibrant vision of the future.

have enlisted Daniel Timms aka Loom's debut EP for their latest release. His track 'Mazed' was featured

The crackling vocal transmissions of title track 'Grade' set the tone for Loom's ominous soundscapes - 
over the course of the EP drums whip and crack over an eery tapestry of low end, unsettling pads and 
obtruse melodies. The cryptic intro to 'Rain Falls Hard Here' is soon contextualised by mournful chordal 
movement baroque indebted melodic lines, while the drum programming of 'North Star' rarely settles on 
one rhythmic point as it's guided by the interjecting vocal cuts that bridge the different sections. 
'Fukushima' picks the pace up, with raw synth movement working alongside Loom's signature harmonic 
language. 
While many artists sample and digest new genres of music in a club setting, Loom discovered grime at 
the age of 13 while randomly scanning the frequencies of his dad's radio; a fitting story given the cold war 
atmospheres, brutalist architecture, urban sprawls and darkness explored in his music. These dark 
corners are beautifully juxtaposed by playfulness, kineticism, colour and melody to brilliant effect - the 
sounds discovered by a teenager exploring the night sky via a radio set have rarely translated to music so 
perfectly.

"I guess my music sounds the way it does because it's a product of my environment. I didn't grow up in a city and there's no underground electronic music scene here. When I started listening to electronic music, it was on headphones. It's only in the last couple of years that I’ve heard soundsystem music in it's intended environment. I'm hyper aware of how effective bass can be because I only really heard it properly recently."

Across its four tracks the EP explores a number of melodic, rhythmic and textural ideas. The synth flashes and silence in 'Sleep Lighter' sit in contrast with the sombre tones of 'Urban Myth', while the clattering percussion of 'Regalia' plays against the enveloping bass tones of closing track 'Cymatism'.

Currently residing in Leeds after a period in Brighton, he has been experimenting with sound systems, creating music which is simultaneously stark and subtle. Iglew discovered electronic music not through raves but through podcasts. Because of this, his compositional approach is based on harmony, melody and texture as opposed to dancefloor hype. 'Urban Myth' is a result of the belated immersion of an outsider into sound system culture.

Across a varied back catalogue, Mr. Mitch’s Gobstopper imprint has primarily operated under the loose classification of Grime but has consistently tested its boundaries sufficiently in order to steer it clear of any real pigeon-holing. Previous releases have come from Social State, Bloom, Strict Face and Mr. Mitch himself and throughout, Gobstopper has remained a platform for talented oddballs to experiment to meritorious effect. 

Next in line is another auspicious talent from London: Tarquin. Having garnered support from the likes of Plastician and Mickey Pearce and having had tracks aired on Rinse and NTS, Tarquin steps up and marries with Gobstopper’s ethos in offering up 2 fantastically esoteric productions that meld elements from the gamut of UK Bass music with a degree of sweet melody that lends them perfectly to the changing of the seasons. 

‘Kid U’ kicks things off and uses pitch and envelope experimentation to layer darting vocal samples with whips, clangs and plucked strings that work together to build an allaying yet challenging recording. ‘Lost My Marbles’ then gets off to a pacy start. Claps on the 1, choked hats and an urgent synth tone rattle towards a plunge into halftime before discordant tones and nifty sampling decorate a baffling concoction that caps off another coup for Gobstopper and a fine addition to the catalogue.

For anyone with a serious interest in understanding the context that gave life to today’s blossoming instrumental grime scene, Bloom’s ‘Quartz’ - originally released on Gobstopper in 2012 - should be your first point of reference. A fierce, juggernaut of a track, it was arguably the first grime beat of it’s kind to fully connect with wider listeners, blowing the rigid 140bpm template that had defined grime music since its formative years wide open in the process. 

Through utilising space too, Bloom’s work on ‘Quartz’ felt all the more powerful and amplified - from every gunshot to every abrasive, detuned square wave, each element of the track felt razor-sharp, precise and perhaps most importantly, ruthlessly unapologetic. Maybe it was this sense of brazen, self-assured artistic license that caught Bjork’s ear, after footage emerged of her playing the original mix at a recent Tri Angle Records party in New York. 

To celebrate five years of Gobstopper, it feels all the more poignant then that label boss Mr. Mitch has decided to re-issue ‘Quartz’ on wax, complete with a devilish VIP edit and a specially commissioned remix from US producer Rabit - himself another artist crucial to instrumental grime’s worldwide boom. The VIP baffles in the same way the original mix does, only this time via a boosted sound palette littered with slapstick zaps, pulses and fizzing FX, while Rabit turns a crackly, industrial hand to his rework - a dark, ghoulish interpretation that listens like a natural extension of his work on debut Tri Angle EP, ‘Baptizm’. - Tomas Fraser

Mr. Mitch's Gobstopper Records open their 2016 releases with @loomsounds's aptly titled 'European Heartache' EP, set to be delivered in time for Valentine's.

Self proclaiming his sound as "cold war grime", Daniel Timms aka Loom - according to Passion of the Weiss - "looks back to the square wave synths of the Eskimo era, but also the technology that shaped it: hissy cassette tapes, scratched up dub plates, dodgy pirate radio signals and early computer plugins". 'Grade', his debut EP for Gobstopper, was lauded by THUMP, Juno Plus, XLR8R, DJ Mag and The FADER. 'European Heartache' explores deeper into his spacious, romantic take on instrumental grime.

"The core theme in my EP is a struggle with identity. What's my identity when society dictates how I should present myself because of my race, sex, religion, sexual preference. What's my identity, when the borders keep changing, when I've been displaced, fled my country because of war, what's my identity when my sex changes? Do I even know my own identity, or am i just portraying what I think is expected of me?"

Gobstopper Records marked their fifth anniversary in 2015. The label has released music by Strict Face, Dark0, Bloom and Mr. Mitch himself.

London-based producer and DJ Tarquin has returned to Gobstopper Records for his second release with the seminal underground label, ‘Grease’. Tarquin delves deeper into the boundary pushing sound that his productions have become synonymous with for this two track release, out on digital and 12” vinyl formats from 5th May. 

The release’s A-side, ‘Grease (Chord Mix)’ is a high tempo example of the genre’s more experimental side, using fragmented percussive samples set to a background of pitch-bent chord stabs and twisted melodic elements. Providing as much impact in the track’s negative space as in its instrumentation, Tarquin’s minimalist approach to production on ‘Grease (Chord Mix)’ establishes its boldness and makes it one of the most recognisable examples of deconstructed club music of the year so far. 

As a counter-point to the abstract starkness of ‘Grease (Chord Mix)’, the release’s flip side ‘Foxtown’ utilises ominous synths and distorted bass tones to tackle the more upfront sound of first generation grime production. Tarquin adds short, sharp chops of texture to the mix from every angle, creating a sound that feels robust without ever adding too many layers. Using revered trademarks of the genre’s sound such as MIDI flute melodies and menacing pads, ‘Foxtown’ brings to mind a more glitched-out interpretation of some of Dizzee Rascal’s ‘Boy In Da Corner’-era production work. 

Tarquin’s second release on Gobstopper Records is the sound of an artist mastering his own experimental sound whilst acknowledging its foundational elements. This flexible approach to his productions places Tarquin highly in the ranks of the UK’s forward thinking club elite and makes ‘Grease’ one of 2017’s exciting and essential grime releases.

Sheffield born production prodigy Lloyd SB has long been a secret weapon of the underground instrumental grime scene. His assertive club tracks have been staples in radio sets from the likes of Murlo, Scratcha DVA, Slackk and more, with his dominance over the more hard-edged side of grime production looking set to continue with his inaugural outing for Gobstopper Records, ‘8ths, 16ths/Princess Anna’. 

Opening to a cacophony of warped snares, the release’s A-side swells early on with a glistening soundscape, providing the perfect build thanks to buried mechanised percussion before pushing its rhythmic elements to the forefront. Using full frontal percussive artillery as its main focus, ‘8ths, 16ths’ almost completely removes any trace of melody in favour of unrelenting kicks, twisted snares and glass shatter sounds - providing a destructive take on the modern club blueprint. 

The release’s second track exhibits a more melodic if no less frenetic side to Lloyd SB’s production. Set to a pummelling bed of laser-esque bass sounds, ‘PRINCESS ANNA’ is a chaotic blend of 8 bit bursts, rapid-fire arpeggios and affected cymbals. Finding rhythm in the track’s space, ‘PRINCESS ANNA’’s beat becomes more and more sparse as it progresses, utilising dizzying panning and hints of vocal chops as the sole human element in an instrumental that’s as hard-edged and cold as they come. 

As an artist that’s widely considered amongst his contemporaries to be one step ahead of the game, Lloyd SB’s debut release for Gobstopper is a disorientating but focused example of forward-thinking club music. Both tracks embody the sound of a master of their craft, experimenting with their genre to push it into more devastating, and above all else, original places.

Mr. Mitch’s Gobstopper label follow a trio of blistering club records from Odeko, Tarquin and newcomer Lloyd SB with Orlando’s new four-tracker, ‘The Tide That Moves Me’.

Formerly known as Orlando Volcano, the moniker under which he released his debut EP, ‘Complete Concrete’, with Liminal Sounds in the summer of 2016, Orlando — like Mr. Mitch — is a producer who places emotion at the heart of his output. “My work explores themes of landscape and environment and a constant longing for the unobtainable”, he explains.

‘The Tide That Moves Me’ functions around these core threads, with the hopeful, new-age pop of the title-track, the soft, melody-rich dancehall of ‘Cyaa Done’ featuring new-school Jamaican vocalist Nemesis, and the glistening, wistful electronica of ‘The Smoke Descends’ all referencing a range of warming, open-ended emotions. 

Alongside the shimmering ‘Sensory Deprivation Tank’ — a track that comes alive with sporadic drum bursts to give the EP mettle for the dance — Orlando has honed in on a sound that functions in its own, bubble-like space, illuminating gorgeous, high-level sound design and his take on future club tropes in the process.

Gobstopper alumni Loom returns to the label for his third outing since debuting with ‘Grade’ back in 2014. 

Now a founding member of club collective and party, Acid Fantasy — a popular club night he has helped run for the past year alongside Akito and Nervous Horizon duo TSVI and Wallwork — Loom’s palette has continued to expand and evolve, as evidenced by sparkling new record, ‘London Ambient’. 

Where ‘Grade’ and 2016 follow-up ‘European Heartache’ functioned around experimental grime tropes and fractious melody, ‘London Ambient’ unfurls broader, complex landscapes and sounds, inspired by discovering ‘so much new music’ working in London record shops over the last two years. “I’ve been introduced to so much new stuff, music I never would have heard before”, Loom explains, “…and these new influences gave me loads more drive to start making music”. 

Written with a wide-eyed sense of discovery, ‘London Ambient’ flexes between futuristic, sci-fi soundscapes (‘Heavy Glow’), sprawling acid-y club trips (‘Aacccid’) and sub-heavy, rave breaks (‘Saturday Job At Laser Quest’). These myriad sounds, bookended by the lush ‘Heavy Glow’ and dreamy, bubbling soundscape, ‘Forever’, compound Loom’s new-found sense of discovery — a fitting motif for a label that continues to grow and re-mould with every release.
