Mohammad Reza Mortazavi - Liberation

An eerie interweaving of spectral passion and vivid ancestral threads, GOHAR X GRAIL's second mix evokes the nomadic journeys of those who came before, as well as shared histories of loss and exile. Featuring experimental electronic music from Iran; spoken works from giants of Iranian and Scottish national poetry, Ahmad Shamlu and Sorley MacLean; rare recordings of a fading Scottish balladry tradition; songs of failure and faerie from Nina Simone and Googoosh; and a variety of traditional folk music from Iran, Dagestan, and the Scottish Highlands, we remember those who are gone, and through remembrance, their stories live on.

The lullaby (Lalai) is a piece originally made for a performance called "Picture of Resistance" and performed at the "Magacin Art Gallery" in Belgrade. The event, which was planned independently, featured the piece, along with other pieces of my colleagues, all of whom had moved to Belgrade to perform Marina Abramovic's work.

The performance was inspired by the protest and spontaneous movement of "the Girls of Enghelab Street", and that work is dedicated to them and all Iranian women in their fight, struggle and resistance. All these years have been and will be oppressed. It is the direct and indirect (symbolic) message of freedom, freedom of speech, freedom of opinion, and freedom of dressing (hijab).

At that performance, the audience shows interest in the piece, and I received many requests to send the music to them, so I decided to make this shorter version just for listening and share it with everyone. 

The music is based on a Persian folklore lullaby, but it is a combination of several genres and cultures of different music, which I call Transcultural Electroacoustic Music.
The lullaby is repeated over time in this piece and tells an unclear story that the listener can perceive with their own perceptions.

I hope that one day these pains will be healed, even though the wounds will remain.

،آن اجرا از حرکت اعتراضی و خود جوش “دختران خیابان انقلاب” الهام گرفته شد و آن کار هم تقدیم شده به آنها و تمام زنانِ ایرانی برای مبارزه، تلاش و مقاومتشان در طی تمام این سال‌ها که به آنها ظلم شده است و میشود. آن اثر پیامش به طور مستقیم و غیر مستقیم (سمبلیک) آزادی بیان، آزادی عقیده، و آزادی پوشش (حجاب) است

This week on Radio Discostan, we are honored to host this very rare collection of recordings from the personal archives of Afghan Records Gallery, tracing the borderless journeys of songs between Afghanistan and its surrounding regions:

"Considered as coming from the crossroads of Asia, Afghan music is often presented as a mixture of Indian and Persian influences. It is true that we find these ingredients in the kitchen but it would be forgetting a little too quickly that Afghanistan is also a land which saw the birth of great composers like Jalil Zaland, Nainawaz or even Ustad Shayda. Many traditional songs have become popular in neighboring countries to the point where for some of them it is no longer clear who started performing them. Artistic and popular expression doesn't care about damn borders, does it? The song Kamar Barik is the perfect illustration of these traveling melodies: composed in Tajikistan to illustrate a poem by Lahouti (Iranian), it was Afghan singers who probably interpreted it most; Ustad Biltoon or Zaher Howeida (who had great success in Iran with this single in the 70s) had it prominently in their repertoire. Jalil Zoland, former manager of Kabul radio and himself a great singer and musician, spent a while in Iran where he composed several pieces for quite a few well-known artists. Afghan singer Naïm Popal also recorded his first tapes in Iran with some famous Iranian musicians. In the other republics of Central Asia, many artists, both classical (like Leyla Sharipova) and pop (the Gulshan ensemble in Tajikistan) also used the Afghan repertoire to bring their personal touch to these pretty compositions. This non-exhaustive musical selection invites you to take a look at these transnational connections."

Afghan Records Gallery is the project of Bordeaux-based Julien Thiennot. The site’s collection consists of vinyl recordings from Radio Kabul and Radio Afghanistan musicians, vocalists, and composers.
