Chris Galloway aka Woodenhorse Provocateur aka the man like Roots Unit has been into this record game for a minute. He's bent our minds with the freshest OG re-edits and productions as one quarter of the Soft Rocks massive, brought us some wonderful modern house, Balearic and downtempo music via his peerless Kinfolk & Vibrations labels and has undoubtedly relieved quite a few of you of some quids in his role as a respected record dealer over the years. 

All of the above activities, as well as a youth spent partying in the midst of the original acid house wave and beyond here in the UK means Chris has a truly open musical mind and some set of ears on him, and through this mix we get to enjoy the fruits of his impeccable taste and collection. 

This one's in a heavy dub mode - if you hadn't guessed already - and by that we mean all shades of dub, from the spatial to the sublime to the unreleased and exotic. It's all here. So - We're back with mix #57, which is very special indeed. 
It took us a little while, but we finally managed to get a sublime mix from our friends Elaine and Jack, also known as Time Is Away.

Digging into the outer realms of everything from dream-pop, dub, reggae to dub techno and beyond, Time Is Away are 2 of London's finest and most original record playing duos. They've been friends of GGHQ for many years and have been the brains and ears behind a couple of borderline cult mixtapes, as well as their long running and much loved NTS radio show.

This fine selection for GGHQ sees all sorts of mysterious b-sides, obscure 12 mixes, deep LP cuts and rarities woven together with the care and the instinctual approach to playing records that comes with years and years spent combing dusty racks in backwater suburban towns and infamous record stores alike. We're happy to have the man like Toby Tobias on board for this one, a true London digger, DJ, producer and man about the city. 

Toby's been in the game for a minute or 2 and he's been grafting away for years releasing music on top shelf labels like Rekids, ESP Institute and Futureboogie to name just a couple. His original productions and re-edits have found their way into discerning selectors bags across the world and TT is a dope DJ himself too, as this mix shows. He's also a collector of rave and dance culture ephemera and his recent zine (a collab with Klasse Wrecks - link below)showcases some of his deep archive. 

Clocking in at 2.5 hours, Toby's mix runs the gamut from glacial ambient to stepping dubwise electronics, to pristine house, techno deep digs and way beyond. It's a proper mix, made by someone who puts in work to find great records and it's the ideal way to kick off this years GGHQ mix.

We're happy to have DJ Alex Voices back for an extended 2 part live mix, recorded at a secret private party / Berlin location on new years eve, 2021. The whole recording is just over 8 hours long, so we'll post it up in 2 parts with the next instalment coming in a month or 2. 

Needless to say, Alex shouldn't really need an intro, but for the uninitiated he's one of London's finest DJs and selectors (now based in Berlin), a former Lucky Cloud / Loft sound-system crew member, and 1/3 of Voices Collective who alongside Cedric Woo and John Ramar held a long residency at Plastic People (RIP). Fellow Irish selector Colpey Calling has blessed us with a rolling and fun mixtape taking in all sort of sonic styles, freewheeling open-ended and lovingly put together, his mix is the perfect mood enhancer. 

If you pay attention to Londons ever-shifting club scene, you'll have seen David's name pop up alongside the soon to be world famous 'Donegal Social Club' monicker. Ever pushing the freshest Irish talent and DJs, the DSC annual 'Discover Ireland' day long internet takeover is always worthy of your eyes and ears and features the best established and upcoming music from the North and the South of Ireland. A rather special affair from one of the many friendly faces we met down in Norwich earlier this year. What a place. Honestly, a real eye-opener with loads of passionate music folk lurking. Ben aka Sseagulls is a proper head and all-round local legend there and someone who definitely knows how to play the records, as you'll hear from this mix. Sseagulls, from deepest Norfolk, floating in to provide a mix for the GGHQ! Head Keg filler and party supplier for the Cosmic Pint Glass, Sseagulls, has been organising the musical output for the record label for the past 12 years. This mix was originally assembled to put some of the Cosmic Pint Glass influences on paper. Containing Library Gems, Jazz Fusion, Deep and Balearic House, Minimal and Prog Rock, these tracks are from all ends of the human creation. Our Berlin buddy and Celtic soul brother Jank Inc. supplying us with 70+ minutes of lefthand electrics of all shades and persuasions. One of the founders of Berlin club night and record label 'Pace Yourself', Jack has been out there transmitting for a wee while now. We've played at his heady club night at Paloma in the past, where a disgusted German woman stormed out of the club midway through the majestic Red Zone remix of Will Downing's 'The world is a ghetto' stating that it was 'the most offensive thing' she'd ever heard, followed by a near sunday morning war with the denizens of Görlitzer Park. All in all - we knew were kindred with the Pace Yourself mob that weekend. Only right then, that Jack should come aboard the good ship GG for a mix. 

Jack's mix is deep, subtle, atmospheric and introspective. The perfect music to drift to, all lovingly put together on a recent visit to his mother's house in Scotland. If you've tuned in to any of his Refuge Worldwide shows, or attended any of his underground events, then you know already. We're happy to present this one, get lost in it. You'll like it.

GGHQ Mix #73 : Jank Inc. - 'The Doghouse'

For the 74th mix we want to pay tribute to a friend of GGHQ whom we sadly lost a year ago this week, Paul 'DJ Regal' Eve. 

We shared the second part of his 'The Bronx Is Burning' mix series back in 2019, but the file for this first part has been sitting in the GGHQ Mediafire account (remember those?) for the last 15 years. We felt it only right to celebrate Paul, and share his amazing selections for everyone to hear and enjoy. This was originally recorded and shared via Brian Not Brian and Jeremy Spellacey's 'Ghetto Disco' blog from way back, and the link (and blog) have been long inactive. 

This mix has got some absolute jams on it, lovingly selected, spliced, edited and worked into a frenzy by Regal in his home studio back in 2010. This is music for B-Boys, hustlers, poppers, lockers, groovers, smokers, shakers and movers. Inspired by the mythical block parties and mastermix radio shows of NYC infamy that have captured all of our imaginations and shaped our musical landscapes to this day.

A longtime rave lurker, acid house stalwart and the brains and beauty behind the soon-to-be infamous Psychic Zebra imprint, shaking the shit outta folks with their slow and steady output of music. We've been fans of all of this for a minute, since the very first white labels hit the streets, and GGHQ played a small part in spreading the PZ gospel a little in this here part of the world. Word. 

This one is all over the map, but it is absolutely the perfect OST to this incoming weekend. Our advice? Play it fucking LOUD, twist em up, pour one out and pump it from end to end. The niftiest fiftieth - The latest instalment of this here mix series. 

50 is a milestone! You know we had to bring some heat. We had to make sure it was a big one. That's why we asked Richard to make us this super duty tough mixtape, and he kindly obliged! 

Richard has been a longtime associate of ours here at the GGHQ, a DJ, remixer, producer, B-boy and writer who we've appreciated for at least a couple of decades or more. He's someone who is legitimately from the old-school who's always trodden his own path, whether it's visually, sonically or as a DJ. He has laid down some of our favourite musical moments, edits and mixes over the years. We're honoured to have this jammy from him, and to be honest he 'went in', as they say... digging deeper into his b-boy roots to give us (in his words)a heavyweight selection:

"Inspired by 1970s New York City, drawing in influences from youth gang and biker culture, the origins of Hip Hop and graffiti culture and the rock music played by Francis Grasso, David Mancuso and Afrika Bambaataa. A raucous, high-speed ride through the funkier side of psyche, prog, Latin and heavy rock and breaks. Biker groove. Expect the unexpected and enjoy the ride..."

This is a real one, you can almost smell the subways and hear the chains rattling. Strap yourself in, and hold tight!

Where has 2020 gone? 

We are almost out the other side of this insane year, and we at GGHQ hope that you are all safe and sound. The music never stops, and we hope that our friends have all found some solace and enjoyment through the simple acts of listening, discovering & sharing. 

We're super happy to see out 2020 with this, our last mix of the year. We couldn't be in better hands to be honest. Øyvind is a top selector, producer, remixer and he is one of those DJ's who is beyond versatile. He just knows music inside and out and is a formidable talent in the booth... genre and sounds are no barriers to him and his own style is unmatched. A longtime former resident at Oslo's clubbing institution JAEGER, Øyvind held down Wednesday nights there for a decade plus welcoming a host of global DJ luminaries and tastemakers into his zone. 

Here we find Øyvind in a relaxed mood, combing his impressive collection for more spaced out and downtempo grooves, offering a deep selection to soothe and get lost in. We're really pleased to present this lovely mix to you from our friend and someone who we feel is a true talent out there in the vast world of music we all inhabit.
