A little something I found digging through my student compositions - one of the 'five bagatelles for five clarinets' I ended up submitting for for my Masters Portfolio.

I was sat at the piano in a practice room about to begin the composition. Next door a fellow student was warming up their clarinet and I could just about make out tiny waves of sound every time they played really high.

I'd just heard one of my lecturer's compositions, 'The Last Memory' (for clarinet and tape delay). I wondered if I could create a similar effect with live instrumentalists. I sketched a quick impression of what had wafted through the wall moments earlier and distilled it into a single melodic figure (heard at the start of the composition), then simply took it for a stroll, passing it between the five players who, after passing it onto the next player, would then take it off into the distance and disappear.

I decided to write for one of each of the five sizes of clarinet to exploit the timbral range of the instrument:
- the shrill, piercing 'Eb' clarinet
- the standard 'Bb' clarinet
- the slightly larger, mellower 'A' clarinet
- the darker, fuller Bass Clarinet
- the amazingly heavy almost deadened contra bass clarinet

I've often lubricated my creative practice with injections of creative energy mined from the well of Brian Eno's Oblique Strategies cards. One of my all time favourites reads "honour thy mistake as a hidden intention".

The final sound bears the hallmark of genius well above my pay-grade and was actually a mistake (it's difficult to play its lowest notes of the contra bass clarinet very quietly and, in attempting to fade away the final note, the player let out a 'squeak' that was the perfect end to the composition).

This started off as a challenge - build a track using a single synth plugin (Ableton's Operator), using only Ableton stock instruments and effects.

It definitely requires a bit of reworking, but it has a general shape that suggests where it could go next time I rework it.
