Ibibio Sound Machine are set to release their debut LP through Soundway Records. Fronted by British / Nigerian vocalist Eno Williams, they combine elements of West African highlife, disco, post-punk & psychedelic electro soul. Preceded by the pulsating first single 'Let's Dance', ‘Ibibio Sound Machine’ will be released 17th March.

Folk stories, recounted to Eno by her family as a child in her mother's South-Eastern Nigerian Ibibio language form the creative lyrical fabric of the album. A large dose of electronic elements and an approach as influenced by London as much as by West Africa, give the vocals and guitar lines space to breath without being overwhelmed.

From the banging sub-bass of 'Lets Dance' to the spiritual, gospel-tinged notes of the album's opening track 'Voice of the Bird', the band have turned in a dynamic and, at times, beautiful take on modern afro-soul music.

The 8-piece live band made their official live debut at this year's Transmusicales in France and will be a name to look out for in 2014.

Hot on the heels of his successful autumnal tour of Europe, the antipodean beatsmith and low-riding soul-brother, Inkswel, arrives on the eighth 12” from Burek Records. Considering Inkswel's been working with people like Merwyn from Virgo Four, Gifted & Blessed and Linkwood for the third release on his own Hot Shot Sounds imprint, we weren't surprised when he told us about the recent collaboration he'd had with Dave Aju. Naturally we were keen to get this out into the world, complementing it with great remixes and additional tracks from Inkswel.

The A-side comprises three funkadelicious, shape-throwing, pop-locking slices featuring the talents of San Fran's Dave Aju, Melbourne's Cazeaux O.S.L.O, Christchurch's Isaac Aesili and Adelaide's Charli James. They wear their shared love for hiphop on their sleeves, replicating old school sampling techniques and twinning them with a feel for modernity. 

The open kicks and sax thrills that begin 'No More Suckas' cement syrupy pads and swirling keys as Dave Aju rhymes about that classic conundrum, being given the chance for a night of intimate relations. Rotascoping blips and pads combined with fat bass work underpin the conscious spoken word poetry of 'Mind Yours', and 'Saturated' closes the side with razor-sharp claps, wonky chords and 808 cowbells laying the foundation for vocal call and responses. This ain't hip-house, it's hiphop-house.

On the B-side our trio of heavyweight remixers let rip, each in their characteristic inimitable styles. NYC's DJ Nature edits and extends No More Suckas, playing with the vocals and adding strong drum patterns with a lilting flute melody to turn in a true hypnotic deep house chugger. Berlin's Iron Curtis uses the pads and spoken word component of the original to prelude a darkly evocative late-night slice of enticement, with heavy off-kilter kicks, haunting bells and floating chords drawing the listener deeper and deeper. London's breakbeat legend IG Culture uses the same spoken word parts as Iron but recombines them into new patterns as he lays down massive echoing big-room bass and jukey snares to fashion the original into a tour-de-force of footwork.

Inkswel proves that hiphop is the sibling of house music, and this EP helps join the dots between those two forms of music whilst taking it to future forms.

Gold Code aka Raf Zevallos-Crowe, is a DJ/producer based in Orange County, California. A lifelong music lover, collector, and DJ, Raf's eclectic sets run the gamut of dance music with a base in-house and techno.

Growing up in 1980s Los Angeles, he was initially inspired by radio mix shows and DJs such as Doc Martin, Rob One, Michael "Mixxin" Moore, and 1580 KDAY Mixmasters. Moving to San Francisco in 1992, he immersed himself in its underground scene. Attending parties lead to working them and eventually to djing. He played his first warehouse in 1996 and spent the next 10 years djing and producing some of San Francisco’s most infamous parties and club nights.

"Gold Code" was initially founded as a music blog in 2007. The site showcased past, present, and future classics as well as his personal edits and DJ mixes. 

In 2009, he focused his efforts on music production and a live show. He adopted "Gold Code" as his moniker and debuted a well-received live set at the celebrated “As You Like It” parties. Remixes soon followed for Nude Photo Music and SubSensory labels culminating with his debut release, "The Day After" with remixes by Audioelectronic, Basskittens, Chris Fierenze, and Jonah Sharp.

2015 brought a move back to Southern California and a radio show, OMAKASE. Currently broadcasting live on Sunday from 6-8 pm [Pacific] on KUCI 88.9 FM, and livestreaming on www.twitch.tv/omakaseshow, showcasing the art of mixing past, present, and future classics.
