While everyone has different spending habits, the first million will allow you to start pivoting so you can make choices for your enjoyment, not just for the sake of money. But when is it too late to start making these moves? Is there a certain point where early retirement, or retirement at all, is off the table? Courtney was raised frugal, and unlike most, she never strayed off that path. Buying old cars, eating at home, and seeing matinee movies were the norm for her, but this began to get harder and harder as her family grew. Courtney was raising four children on her own, making only $15,000 per year, with multiple debts to pay off. But now, only ten years later, she’s a millionaire with equity, retirement investments, a large cash reserve, and multiple rental properties.

How did she make the switch in the “late period” of her life? Courtney goes over the details that led her and her husband out of bankruptcy, into investing, and eventually to millionaire status. By no means was this an easy or quick journey, but Courtney serves as living proof that even if you’re in your forties or fifties, you still have plenty of time to build a strong financial foundation, and maybe retire early!

Né à Dakar en 1990, Mohamed Mbougar Sarr est devenu – en 2021 et à 31 ans – le premier écrivain d’Afrique subsaharienne consacré par le plus prestigieux des prix littéraires français, le Goncourt, pour « La plus secrète mémoire des hommes », enquête au long cours et labyrinthe narratif enivrant, inspiré par le destin tragique du Malien Yambo Ouologuem (éditions Jimsaan / Philippe Rey). Mais avant le succès, ce wonderboy des lettres africaines était déjà l’auteur de trois romans diablement maîtrisés, aux sujets casse-gueule : « Terre ceinte » (2015, sur les milices djihadistes), « Silence du chœur » (2017, sur l’accueil de 72 migrants en Sicile) et « De purs hommes » (2018, sur l’homophobie au Sénégal). Il vit et travaille aujourd'hui à Beauvais (Oise).

Son principal trait de caractère est d’être « patient » et « ancré sur Terre ». Mohamed Mbougar Sarr a songé, ces dernières années, à écrire un hommage à son dieu en ce bas-monde (Zinedine Zidane), mais aussi à écrire une biographie de Dieu, le vrai, celui des cieux, « en forme d’introspection-bilan, sur sa tristesse et sa solitude ». « Si Dieu existe, dit-il, je m’interroge : dans quel état est-Il ? Sa solitude comme Sa tristesse est sans doute plus forte que celle des hommes. Pour préserver Sa santé mentale, Dieu s’est bouché les tympans et s’est tourné vers autre chose depuis très longtemps. » L’auteur a, à ce jour, renoncé à ce livre, « car ce serait très provocateur – et je ne suis pas un provocateur ».

Les sujets de ses trois premiers romans, écrits et publiés entre 2012 et 2018, n’ont pourtant rien de particulièrement lisse. Il y aura d’abord sa tentative de « prendre à bras-le-corps une Histoire en cours », via le remarquable « Terre ceinte », en partie inspiré par « L’Armée des ombres » de Kessel et centré sur la résistance d’un village africain à la tyrannie du djihadisme. Un séjour en Sicile fait ensuite naître en lui l’ambitieux « Silence du chœur », sur « les échos faibles » des réfugiés qui traversent la Méditerranée à leurs risques et périls, le racisme ordinaire, la solidarité humanitaire, les « bons » et les « mauvais migrants ». Suivra enfin le très bref et courageux « De purs hommes », qui dénonce l’homophobie quotidienne institutionnalisée au Sénégal à travers les yeux grands ouverts d’un jeune professeur de lettres, Ndéné Gueye. L’ouvrage déclenchera tardivement une polémique qui colle encore aux baskets de l’écrivain.

Trois livres de son temps pour « défier la réalité », trois livres vendus à moins de 3000 exemplaires à leur sortie aux éditions Présence Africaine puis Jimsaan / Philippe Rey, qui sont décortiqués dans ce deuxième épisode, à la lumière de cette profession de foi, que M. M. S. formula un matin sur France Inter : « Que la violence soit devenue la langue la plus audible ne signifie pas qu’elle doive demeurer la plus entendable. (…) Essayons (…), le courage au ventre, de trouver d’autres phrases, d’exhumer des phrases de soie sous les phrases de fer, de nous enfoncer dans l’ombre des phrases à la recherche des phrases d’ombre – celles qui protègent du feu, dût-on d’abord y aller pour les en tirer, ou les y forger. »
