Following his move to Los Angeles from Ohio, Ted Feighan has returned with the next installment in his growing oeuvre as Exotica beatsmith, Monster Rally. Feighan’s third full-length as Monster Rally, Return to Paradise, is decidedly faster paced and more percussion-heavy than last year's Beyond the Sea, producing an aesthetic that closely resembles his live performances. The tracks melt together in a mysterious, blissful, and romantic haze invoking that signature Monster Rally thrill of being in a timeless, hypnagogic limbo. The album is pure pictorial fantasy, translating the images of a half-century of National Geographics into 17 tracks that’ll have both tiki drink connoisseurs and scotch aficionados swaying and bopping to the sweat and crackle of Feighan’s latest beatscapes. As with his past releases, Feighan is eager to have his passport stamped, reluctant to stay in one paradise for too long. His wanderlust samplings travel from Peru to Japan, Detroit to Maui, and Ghana to Barcelona expressing the pageantry and ceremony of destinations only the truly intrepid have tasted before.

The artwork of Return to Paradise is greatly inspired by the LP jackets of classic Exotica albums: Martin Denny's Quiet Village, Les Baxter's Jungle Jazz, and Arthur Lyman's Bwana to name just a few. Over fifty different varietals of flowers and plants from around the world decorate the blossoming arrangement on R2P’s cover. In addition, the packaging features printed sleeves showing a take on traditional Hawaiian patterned prints of native flowers and tropical birds. The inside of the gatefold jacket is a visual imagination of the kind of space Return to Paradise inevitably occupies.

Juliet was born many years ago in a used bookstore in Gainesville, Florida, when critically acclaimed musician/author Travis Atria found a box of sixteen miniature, leather-bound volumes of Shakespeare. Inside each book was an inscription from Ralph to Evelyn, along with the month the book was bought, and the year 1914. Late one night, taking a volume from the shelf, Atria decided to write a concept album of their love story.

In a career known for wild, gleeful shifts in genre and style, Juliet is Atria's wildest shift yet. Gone is the psychedelic rock 'n' soul of 2021's Moonbrain, which one reviewer called "Zappa meets Mayfield." In its place is an intricate work of orchestral pop, sometimes restrained, sometimes bombastic, with Shakespeare as a unifying theme. Nearly fifty musicians participated in the recording, including a makeshift orchestra and an 18-piece choir. Partly recorded and fully mixed by Ryan Williams at West Viking Studio in Ocala, Florida---home of the late, great Bruce Swedien---Juliet is the final album to come from Swedien's legendary pedigree, which stretches from Duke Ellington and Sarah Vaughn, to Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson.

“Poor Wanda the hen / Not the first in line, but far from the end” — The third single from 2023’s Workingman’s Guma (released 10/20/23 on Gold Robot Records) lands among feathers and fur as songwriter T.J. Masters lovingly weaves between the stories of two animal companions, each out for themselves but inseparably linked by his amateur husbandry. With a twinkle-eyed lyricism that suggests an alternate history in which George Harrison went down the Mississippi in 1968 to write with John Hartford instead of up the Hudson to Dylan, “Poor Wanda” brims with pastoral tenderness woven into a dense and deftly-picked acoustic setting. One of four songs cut for the album in a single day with minimal overdubbing, the tune captures the energy of a bespoke band learning, developing, and recording a song all in the span of just a couple hours; an old school, live-in-the-room style of recording that has come to characterize most Guma releases.

"Can’t Pretend," the third single from Graham Hill’s upcoming album, Isotropes, is a somber duet with vocalist Maggie Koerner, whose resume includes The Revivalists and Galactic. The aching, shimmering ballad has a cinematic lilt, as two souls yearn for connection while pondering the world’s fate. “Should I say hello / or wave goodbye?” What begins as a simple question becomes a haunting refrain, apropos in our modern age of uncertainty. As a whole, the album creates a walkable field of tunes that evoke a desire to connect and welcome, while calling to the wheel of anticipation > elation > melancholy that propels into hope, rolling all the way home.

Ohioan's new album, EMPTY / EVERY MT, is a record of protest songs but this is nothing like protest music you've heard before. This is a new form of country music. It's Appalachian mountain music mashed-up with African desert music played by a dude raised in the shadow of Appalachia who now lives in the desert. (Read that twice if you need to; it's important to the story.) EMPTY / EVERY MT is an album about the "Appalachian Desert," a concept created by Ohioan band-leader Ryne Warner. He posits that one day mountaintop removal and mining will level the forests of Appalachia, turning once lush land into an arid desert-scape not unlike parts of the American West and North Africa. The music here was made using the sounds associated with those places--banjo, dobro, jaw harp, dulcimer, African scales, the electric guitar, modal tunings. The result is an image of Warner's Appalachian Desert rendered in sound.

Mystery Cove, the forthcoming Monster Rally album, is a soundtrack to an imaginary movie both fit for the vaults of TMC and primed for a grindhouse exploitation flick screening. Mystery Cove contains a narrative arc of young lovers on an island getaway. As the grooves spin, Monster Rally reveals a cabalistic presence in the jungle that leads them on an adventure of surf competitions (“The Big Surf”), voodoo terror (“Tourismo”), and plenty of slushy cocktails (“After Hours”). The occult meets the salt-rimmed rum mix on Mystery Cove.

Since his Coral LP, Monster Rally has been an analog to the exotica forefathers. His reinvention of cocktail music via luau-loops and tchotchke breaks evokes a mondo vision of the subgenre. With Mystery Cove, the quiet village is not what it seems, and every resort comes at the cost of indigenous displacement. Beyond the florals and brightly feathered fauna is inferno in paradise.
