Here's the third volume of my Verano Mix series. I've been pulling songs together for it for the last couple of months, and I'm quite happy with what came together. Its an hour to tell the story of a summer day, sunrise to sunset. If everything is right, this should be an escape, a pathway to losing your problems for a day. I don't do covers very often, but this song has always hit me in a special way. It takes me away, and puts me in a different place. For the last couple of years I haven't sang on any of my recorded songs, but this cover felt special and I wanted my voice on it because of what it means to me. I was a bit nervous to live up to all of the amazing vocalists that I've worked with, but yes, that's me singing!

I hope when you guys hear this it can do for you what the original always did for me. Hopefully it can transport you somewhere a bit sunnier, with someone you wish you could be with.

Goldroom - Mykonos (Fleet Foxes Cover)

I'm very proud to present Embrace (feat George Maple), the first song from my new EP, which comes out today.

Getting the chance to release music through Snapchat gave me the perfect opportunity to show everyone the version of Embrace that I've always heard in my head. George Maple and I actually wrote Embrace together, so having this come full circle, and to have her singing on the song, feels like a dream. The song Embrace is all about re-connection, and so having George back in my studio again, singing the song, felt like it was meant to be. I'm so stoked to be able to share this with you guys, and I hope you like it!

Each day this week we'll be releasing another song, accompanied by a music video on Snapchat. The most exciting part is that we actually shot all four music videos as a 17 minute short film. We'll be releasing the videos every day this week, so be sure to head to the Snap Channel on Snapchat to catch up and to get lots of behind the scenes extras and interviews!

Wrestling with the passage of time is a challenge that always seems to rear it's head just as the days are reaching their shortest. The air is cool, the trees have lost their leaves, music is bouncing around the world, and here we are again together, just like last year. The world has changed around us, but aren't we right where we were? This time of year is always an impenetrable fog. Judging your place in the world, especially in THIS world, or at least the strange dystopian one we've created for ourselves, is near impossible. What do we even have to cling to, as fall turns to winter and the nights are longer and colder? Underneath everything else at least we can share some music - across continents and oceans and time zones. Music for lonely mornings and drunken nights. Music for closing your eyes to. Music to take us somewhere else. Where do we go from here?

This is for anyone who's out there paying any attention. I released a record a couple of months ago and the entire process of putting it into the world and then going on the road to play the songs has left my head spinning. It's hard to tell which direction is up these days. I'm not sure what I would do if I didn't have these mixes to put together. They're my therapy and I hope maybe they can be the same for you.

Music has always served as an escape for me. My goal with these mixes is always the same - to take a journey for an hour that soundtracks that escape. I spend a lot of time trying to make each mix a seamless thought that rises and falls along with an imagined moment in time. There's magic in those moments where you're with someone and the world opens up and anything feels possible. I'm not sure what I would do without music. I often tell people that music is my primary escape in life, but that's taken on a whole new meaning in the wake of my injury. The recovery process has been at times frustrating and slow for someone so used to being on the move. I had to work in short bursts over the course of a few weeks, finding new music here, building my Live session there, and working on the mix in painful 30 minute chunks. It felt like I was learning everything all over again, but it gave me something to do and it forced me to think through every small decision. I don't think its a coincidence that I finally started to feel like myself as I finished up the mix last week. It truly feels like the music in this mix saved my life, and hopefully it can be a small part in helping yours.

Goldroom - Fifteen (feat. Chela)

The last year has been weird. Foggy endless evenings in my studio, days locked in a cervical neck collar, nights on overnight flights, early mornings in hotel rooms. When you're working through an injury, depression, heartbreak, or even just anxiety about the world, I've always found that the days just start to blend together. The past year feels like an endless haze, full of questions and half answers. I always try to contextualize these mixes, but the truth is, making music has been true north, the one real escape. I've always used music this way, and I'm realizing more as I get older that music is pretty unimpeachable in that way. So what I can promise is that this mix is pure - full of a lot of that confusion, cloudiness, heartbreak, and hope. If you're feeling those things, this mix is for you. I hope it can be a window of hope or a ray of light; an escape you can close your eyes to and breathe for a minute.

Goldroom - Only You Can Show Me (feat. Mereki)

Music has saved my life so many times it's hard to count at this point. It's pulled me from some dark places and inspired me to do things, both personally and professionally that I never thought I was capable of. It makes the best moments brighter and the lowest moments ones that you can process and grow from. I know all of these things to be true, and yet the surprising power of music is something that sneaks up on me every time. 

There's a moment while I was recording SunSets #2, just after I made a particularly nasty mess of a mix, that I had this moment of the purest joy I can remember in ages. I was playing exactly what I wanted to be playing and I was imagining people enjoying the moment with me and it just felt purer than I've felt in months, maybe years. I suppose it's easy to imagine that living in uncertain times would result in some special epiphanies and unexpected ideas, but I never imagined that DJing for essentially nobody would inspire me so much. I feel liberated in a way I never imagined I could be, and I feel like I did when launching the project in 2011 all over again.

This mix, these songs, and then my performance of it, flaws and all, feel like a step towards something more authentic and special than the way I used to make my seasonal mixes. The real improvisation that takes place and the special unexpected happy mistakes make this something much more special to me. I hope regardless of whether or not you were with me last week for the stream that you can hear some of that moment in this mix. I hope this mix, Aviva 2020, can lift you from wherever you are right now, to somewhere a bit more lifted and hopeful than before. Thank you for listening and spread love as always. ~ Josh

"The songwriting session that resulted in 'Guess I'm Jaded' was my last before quarantine," Goldroom says of the song. "Ironically we decided to write a song about being jaded with going out to parties, which has slowly given the song about six new layers of meaning over the intervening months. I can remember the looseness and fun of that session though. It feels both like yesterday and like 2 years ago, the five of us in a cramped room, singing about packed parties and wishing to get some time to spend alone with loved ones. Goldroom & Moontower - Guess I’m Jaded

The transition between Spring and Summer is usually a time filled with so much hope, and yet this year I find myself, unsurprisingly, stuck in a mire of sad music and foggy ambient evenings. I feel like I'm 15 again, actively searching out songs for heartbreak and longing and just bathing in them day after day. I'm not sure how much other people can relate, but I've found myself going through wild swings of emotion and outlook during the last few months. Sometimes almost euphoric about the possibilities ahead and other times pulled down so far into the realities of the moment that doing almost anything becomes paralyzing. One of the few constants has been preparing and then weirdly performing these mixes each month. It's a magic thing because when I'm done I always feel like the mixes sound both like my current state but also some level of escape that I'm unconsciously reaching for. I'm not entirely sure what I'm reaching for at the moment, but I can tell you that these songs made me feel things that I haven't felt in a while. I feel that longing again. I hope it's melancholy doesn't drag you down, but instead gives you a few drops of hope. Summer isn't here yet but it's coming...
