what do you get when you put three jazz musicians, two computer science nerds, and one ex-jock together? golfdads. it sounds like a punchline but golfdads is no joke - mostly. originating in san luis obispo, ca, regional bass slapper casey sublette put up an ad looking for a singer and guitar player. golden-piped brad johnson (lead vocals/rhythm guitar) responded and the two hit it off. former saxophonist kyle nixon then introduced the duo to drake freeman (lead guitar) and justin liu (drums). the three music majors brought a tight and technical style, which combined with casey and brad’s sloppy-funk energy gave the band their unique, particularly jammable vibe. zack ragozzino (keyboard) and brian mendez (sax) were later added to the mix to fill out the full funk rock lineup. drawing influence from all over the music scene, from the red hot chili peppers to childish gambino, from vulfpeck to sublime, golfdads do their best work outside of the limitations of genre, and instead seek to answer one question with every song: Is it funky?
