Mais que uma banda, Quebrante é um conceito, uma experiência.

Idealizada em 2002 pelo músico parisiense Matthieu Hébrard e o dj paulistano Will Robson, a dupla é o núcleo da banda cuja formação esta em constante movimento, feito de encontros musicais diversos, concretizados no estudio durante as gravações.

O processo de criação do Quebrante tem como ponto de partida a realização de uma batida, numa linha hiphop, por Will. Batida na qual Matthieu vem dinamizar os graves tocando contrabaixo, sem pretensão, num fraseado simples ligado ao Funk e ao Dub. Loops, teclados, efeitos, scratchs e outros arranjos são addicionados até consolidar uma faixa que servirá de base para colaborações e intervenções músicais futuras.

De la vai a vida, e os seus encontros. Amigos músicos, cantores, amigos de amigos... a base fica tocando para quem quer ouvir e, a porta aberta para quem sente o suficiente de afinidade para participar do projeto colectivo.

Ensaios, sessões de estudio, mais encontros, mais sessões, passo a passo, nota a nota, a escada criativa é subida, cada um trazendo uma pedra na construção de um projeto cada vez mais rico. Não tem direções fechadas, os músicos convidados ficam livres nas próprias interpretações pois o objetivo é de abrir novas perspectivas musicais.

Assim, a cada ínicio de sessão fica apenas uma pergunta excitante no mente da nossa dupla: o que vai sair?

O resultado é uma mistura fervente de antigo e de novo, de sonoridades e de influências tão variadas quanto as intervenções dos convidados.

É nesse resultado que existe Quebrante! Quando de um núcleo de duas pessoas nasce uma colaboração criativa e musical de seis, sete ou oito pessoas que, além de tocar uma música genuína, formam uma verdadeira banda! Banda efêmera, sim, mas uma banda!

1977, on the 18th of February at dawn, a thousand armed Nigerian army men started tackling Fela and his Kalakuta republic, which were both seen as a symbol of defiance against the oppressive state.

‘Sorrow, Tears and Blood’ was among the first albums Fela released following the destruction of Kalakuta.

The title track is one of the most powerful protest songs ever recorded. In an impassioned attack on police and army violence against political dissenters in Africa, ‘Sorrow, Tears and Blood’ accurately depicts the trail left in the wake of the February 18th raid.

Fela sings how, invariably, the police and army leave behind them "sorrow, tears and blood" while the backing vocalists respond, "dem regular trademark".
As said by Fela, this LP was dedicated "to the memory of those who were beaten, raped, tortured or injured" during the Kalakuta attack.

Decca, which was Fela’s record company, scared by reprisals from the government, refused to release ‘Sorrow, Tears & Blood’. A decision that led Fela into setting up Kalakuta Records and making this album the label’s debut release.

A Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou é, sem dúvida, o segredo mais bem guardado da África do Oeste. Sua produção, tanto em termos de quantidade e qualidade, foi espantosa, gravou mais de 500 canções entre 1970 e 1983.

A riqueza cultural e espiritual da música tradicional beninense teve um imenso impacto na construção moderna daquela. Benin é o berço do Vodun. Os cultos são sempre acompanhados de música.

Dois ritmos de Vodun dominam a música da Orchestre Poly-Rythmo: o Sato, um surpreendente e energético ritmo tocado num tambor vertical gigante, e o Sakpata, um ritmo dedicado ao deus do mesmo nome, o Vodun da Terra, que também é deus da varíola e protege as pessoas contra todas as doenças eruptivas. Esses dois ritmos são misturados pela banda com Funk, Soul, o som maluco do órgão e rifes de guitarra psicodélicos.

Nenhuma dessas faixas foram divulgadas fora do Benin durante o período de ouro da banda. Por causa do custo, a maioria destas gravações raramente se beneficiaram de edições maior do que 500 cópias.

A música desta compilação não é apenas extremamente rara, mas também ilustra como a Orchestre Poly-Rythmo, com o apoio dos selos locais, prosperou misturando o melhor do funk, do soul, do latino e do ritmo Vodun para produzir um som novo que não reflete apenas a herança musical e cultural do Benin, mas a transforma e faz deste pequeno país um incrível “melting-pot” musical.

A produção gráfica da capa recebeu e atenção cuidados especiais.

Utilizando como referências umas capas originais de compactos da banda, nós trabalhamos com exatamente as mesmas técnicas como as usadas na época para recriar uma réplica perfeita do design.

Essas adições resultam em um som elétrico, denso e pesado combinando perfeitamente os fundamentos espirituais e rítmicos dos antigos cânticos de Candomblé com uma mistura suja de sambas psicodélicas, jazz distorcido e afro-punk.

Formed by Juçara Marçal (vocal), Thiago França (sax) and Kiko Dinucci (guitar), Sao Paulo’s most sought after trio is accompanied in this opus by Marcelo Cabral (bass), Sergio Machado (drums) and Samba Sam (percussions).

As suggested by the title, those additions results in an electric, heavy and dense sound melting perfectly the spiritual and rhythmic foundations of the Afro-Brazilian religion Candomblé ancient chants into a dirty brew of psychedelic sambas, distorted jazz and afro-punk.

"This is a sound made in Brazil. All the members are Brazilians.
But the goal is to show the young african music, with all his distinctions that features the origin of the black continent’s music.
In this record we launch several curious things. Starting from a rhythmic draw, based on the camel steps that match the division 4/4, on the same line of YÁ YÁ YÁ and SOUL MUSIC, which was given the name of OGA, this, because in Lagos, Nigeria’s capital, is an intimate treatment among friends. There, a man feels good when compared to a OGA (camel).
Purposely and proudly we launch this new and different LP, not only dedicated to all record collectors in the world but also to all party lovers, nights in club, and even for who’s loving, because on both sides, there aren't intervals. It’s a contagious and crazy rhythm."

This is how, in 1971, Embaixador and Maestro João Negrão described the record on his back cover. These words did not aged a bit.
We are very happy and proud to announce, 44 years later, the first 100% official reissue of this genuine work that became legendary and considered as the "Holy Grail" of Brazilian music among collectors around the world.

The record, released in Goma Gringa's “hard-cardboard paste-on” cover standard, comes with a booklet signed by the journalist Itamar Dantas - responsible for the research - that finally presents the history of Sebastião Rosa de Oliveira aka Embaixador and his band, the Tribo Massáhi. Very special highlight for the unpublished photo that reveals for the first time the band members!

It is not enough to know only one Thiago França's project to decipher his musical personality - still the flagship, the band Metá Metá, synthesizes a bit the spirit. He played on the records and was a prominent musician in Criolo's stage band; integrates the experimental jazz trio Marginals; heads Sambanzo; he is responsible for the pearl "Malagueta, Perus and Bacanaço”; his flesh is carnival as the Espetacular Charanga do França makes clear.

And what else? Well, now he presents to us the Space Charanga!
"Space is the place", so says Sun Ra in the music-synthesis of a Jazz movement fully opened to psychedelia, to chaos, to Rock and Funk influences, to the afro-futurism, et cetera and so on. The motto inspires Thiago in this project. Yet, his way to make jazz is thoroughly Brazilian - not only in the zip code but throughout aesthetics. Moacir Santos is an explicit reference in the stunning "Moacíria" and a certain sanguineous samba swing runs through the veins of the work, from the springiness of Serginho Machado's drumsticks to the gafieira scheme that guide some of the painstaking brass arrangements.

Chaos leads the sextet in this work, but by no means cohesion is missing - chaos is the cohesion. "Ngoloxi / R.A.N.” is a composition in which the four horns seem to bump as unguided bats. Any resemblance with John Coltrane’s “Ascension" dynamics is no mere coincidence but yes inspiration.
“Fakechá” sweats Reggae. "Abdu" has a flavor of the 70's Blue Note jazz. “Conta”, “Cerca Lourenço” and the vignettes “Tão Rápido Quanto Uma Paixão de Metrô” and “Enquanto Ficamos Sem Água” rounds off the repertoire of this record, which already has its "space" in the history of Brazilian jazz. Believe it.

Juçara Marcal is far from a rookie. It is now an over twenty-year career and an extensive discography launched alongside the bands Vésper, A Barca and Metá Metá. Juçara now ventures into his first solo album and does so in a surprising way. Encarnado (2014), more than an overview of his long artistic career, is almost a new start, pointing in a risky and unexpected direction, unimaginable even for those who have followed her long journey until here.

In his spiritual definition, encarnado is the spirit that temporarily occupies a human body. Encarnado also means to become flesh. Not coincidentally, Encarnado, Juçara Marcal’s record, have his whole repertoire marked by the theme of death. However, more than the end, it seems to indicate a search for renewal, rebirth, a desire for "another body", a "new flesh". Soon in the record opening track, by the verses of “O Velho Amarelo“ (Rodrigo Campos), Juçara claims: “Não diga que estamos morrendo, hoje não” (Do not say you're dying, not today). If death is inevitable, may she be faced without fear: “Vai, menina dos meus olhos, penetre entre os olhos, não há piedade, é só o fim, vai!” (Go, girl of my eye, penetrates between the eyes, there is no mercy, it’s just the end, go!). Then in “Ciranda  do Aborto” (Kiko Dinucci) the theme of death appears in a disconcerting way, more explicit, violent: “Passa na carne a navalha, se banha de sangue, sorri ao chorar, cobre o amor na mortalha pra ele não acordar, sente no fel deste beijo, o agouro da morte a se revelar” (Passing in the flesh the razor, bathed in blood, I smiled to tears, cover the love in the shroud for him not to wake up, feel in the gall of this kiss, the omen of death to be revealed).

And how endure listening to a record built from such a deep subject, how unpleasant?
The answer is in Juçara Marçal’s voice. Under his singing hidden and unsuspected beauties gets revealed. And it does not stop, not even an instant. Juçara sings, even when she’s not singing. She sings when she speaks, in the speech of “E o Quico” (Itamar Assumpção). She sings when she screams, the post-tropicalist scream in “Não Tenha Ódio no Verão” (Tom Zé).

I remember Torquato Neto and his famous speech: "A poet does not become with verses, it is the risk, it is to always be in danger without fear, it is to invent danger and to always be recreating difficulties at least larger, it is to destroy the language and explode with it." Following Torquato’s playbook, when discoursing about death, Juçara has never been so alive. By reinventing her,  it has not only opened up new possibilities for herself, but also to the whole Brazilian music. Her record is released in a time where the popular music has lost since some time the importance in the cultural formation of the country. Perhaps it is be much less heard and discussed than what Juçara and Brazil actually deserves. But It will serve from now on and for a long time, as an antidote against the nostalgic and paralysing speech of the prophets of the end of Song. These should pay attention to what Juçara says loud and clear: “Não diga que estamos morrendo, hoje não” (Do not say you're dying, not today).

Then in “Ciranda do Aborto” (Kiko Dinucci) the theme of death appears in a disconcerting way, more explicit, violent: “Passa na carne a navalha, se banha de sangue, sorri ao chorar, cobre o amor na mortalha pra ele não acordar, sente no fel deste beijo, o agouro da morte a se revelar” (Passing in the flesh the razor, bathed in blood, I smiled to tears, cover the love in the shroud for him not to wake up, feel in the gall of this kiss, the omen of death to be revealed).

And how endure listening to a record built from such a deep subject, how unpleasant?
The answer is in Juçara Marçal’s voice. Under his singing hidden and unsuspected beauties gets revealed. And it does not stop, not even an instant. Juçara sings, even when she’s not singing. She sings when she speaks, in the speech of “E o Quico” (Itamar Assumpção). She sings when she screams, the post-tropicalist scream in “Não Tenha Ódio no Verão” (Tom Zé).

I remember Torquato Neto and his famous speech: "A poet does not become with verses, it is the risk, it is to always be in danger without fear, it is to invent danger and to always be recreating difficulties at least larger, it is to destroy the language and explode with it." Following Torquato’s playbook, when discoursing about death, Juçara has never been so alive. By reinventing her, it has not only opened up new possibilities for herself, but also to the whole Brazilian music. Her record is released in a time where the popular music has lost since some time the importance in the cultural formation of the country. Perhaps it is be much less heard and discussed than what Juçara and Brazil actually deserves. But It will serve from now on and for a long time, as an antidote against the nostalgic and paralysing speech of the prophets of the end of Song. These should pay attention to what Juçara says loud and clear: “Não diga que estamos morrendo, hoje não” (Do not say you're dying, not today).

Along with the Bembeya Jazz or Orchestra Baobab, the Rail Band of Bamako is one of the most prolific bands in all of West Africa. This legendary orchestra has launched, among others, the careers of Salif Keita, Mory Kanté and Djélimady Tounkara and has bequeathed in just fifteen years one of the most important work in Malian and West African music.

Encouraged by his superiors at the Ministry of Transport, the station master Aly Diallo, remarkable multi-instrumentalist is charged with developing a modern and eclectic band to animate the Buffet of the station.
Named the Orchestre Rail Band du Buffet Hôtel de la gare de Bamako, the orchestra is officially created in October 1969 under the leadership of conductor, saxophonist and trumpeter Tidiani Koné, an outstanding and unsung musician who was both a griot and a jazzman. Nicknamed the “Malian Miles Davis”, Tidiani Koné embodies by itself the wonderful modernity and adaptability of Malian music. His idea was to bring Malian music out of what he felt was the dead-end cycle of Afro-Cuban and European imitations. He also was the first to understand that Salif Keita’s voice was pure gold and did not miss the chance to recruit the young albino singer.

The Rail Band was established to « explore and propel the Mandingo repertoire in order to aim at the neo-classicism of the African chanson ». In combining Mandingo and Bambara folklore, Congolese rumba, and American Rhythm’n’Blues with French Pop and hints of Calypso, the orchestra’s sound became the soundtrack of a golden decade in Mali’s music from 1970 to the early 1980s and paved the way for numerous West African orchestras to follow.

How to explain such a long fasting for the partner of names like Tom Zé, Vinicius de Moraes, Paulo César Pinheiro, Gonzaguinha, Chico Cesar and Alceu Valenca?
Resigned in front of such a wide hiatus, Vicente had decided not to return to studio. It made no sense to record to repeat ideas, concepts, proposals and sonorities that he had already introduced in previous records.

After being demoted by his son, guitarist Rafa Barreto, from the retirement idea, Vincent composed a theme - that thought was quite different from what he had done until then - and presented it to Manu Maltez. In one of those supernatural coincidences that sometimes happen in the music universe, the bassist, composer and designer revealed to Vicente the motto, kept for years in his head, and which would fit like a glove to that melody. So appeared the story of Cambaco: in Mozambican Shangaan dialect, the wise old elephant, coveted by hunters, that isolates himself to die and preserve the rest of the herd.

Encouraged by the outcome of the recently created, Vicente rowed other unreleased songs, seeking the same sounding proposal: explore the bass and the most grave regions of his guitar, with cells and shorter melodic phrases.
Subverting cambaco’s legend, instead of isolating himself (and accept the end of his artistic life), the composer was ready to com back, this time with a sound full of freshness, robust, dense, unexpected and frighteningly autobiographical.

Gravado ao vivo em 3 dias no Red Bull Studio de São Paulo, o resultado é um disco no qual a banda transmite uma identidade intimamente ligada aos palcos. Numa entrevista dada ao Rolling Stones, Kiko explica: "Nos shows […] ganhamos um espírito de liberdade e de agressividade ao qual fomos fiéis nesse disco. […] A ideia, contudo, era deixar a banda afiada e resolver tudo rápido, ao vivo, com dois ou três takes. É uma questão de desapego: não temos a pretensão de fazer um disco perfeito, de estar com tudo certo.Nós erramos, tem horas que eu enrosco o dedo e tal, mas mexemos pouquíssimo. Acho que falta desprendimento às pessoas. Querem cantar 100% afinado, fazem vários takes e no fim montam um Frankenstein que acaba não passando uma verdade. Nós encaramos como uma Polaroid daqueles dias mesmo.”

Uma Polaroid, um reflexo, cru, direto, sem enfeites. Um retrato melódico da revolta profunda contra o conservantismo odiento e populista. Um grito libertário ao ver renascer os demônios do passado.

Durante a turnê na Europa de Agosto 2016, a banda declara: “A nossa música esta direitamente influenciada pela crise atual, ela é marcada pela angústia e pela turbulência na véspera de um golpe de Estado. Testemunhamos a chegada ao poder da facção mais conservadora, reacionária e fascista da sociedade, infectada por um ódio aos direitos cívicos. Um ódio recuperado, alimentado e difundido pelas grandes mídias, centenas de canais de televisão, jornais e magazines de informação, concentrados nas mãos de cinco famílias riquíssimas e poderosas. Tempos estranhos para fazer música no Brasil mas, justamente por isso é especialmente importante que a arte forneça um contraponto a tanta desinformação e ódio, e levanta a possibilidade de um mundo melhor e mais tolerante."

ONÇA COMBO é um projeto musical de investigação da confluência de tradições estéticas e místicas indígenas, ibéricas e latinas encontradas no Brasil, particularmente no Nordeste. A Onça, um animal de grande protagonismo simbólico em toda a América - e em notável risco de extinção - é invocada aqui para honrar uma tradição estética livre e visceral, latina, brasileira. Buscamos explorar algumas misturas ainda pouco populares entre estas tradições, concentrados na vocação para uma música espiritual, livre e dramática que há na américa do sul. A rusticidade e a liberdade harmônica de parte da música folk (por vezes naïff) sul-americana é também uma influência central. Outro forte norteador é o Jazz, em sua definição mais ampla, mas com ênfase naqueles que buscam uma estética de espiritualidade e transcendência. 

Formado em janeiro de 2015 por Thiago Leiros-Costa (Violas e outras cordas), o projeto conta dois nomes notáveis da música paraibana recente: João Cassiano “Cassicobra” (Percussões) e Stephan Thomas (Saxofones). 


Seu primeiro disco homônimo foi gravado ao vivo em sua maioria (em duas sessões em janeiro e julho de 2015). Sem ensaios ou arranjos pré-definidos, recorrendo a um método de composição e performance do universo do Jazz e da improvisação livre. Mixado direto na mesa analógica buscando um método que minimize lapidações e edições, o disco está sendo lançado pelo selo Franco-Paulistano Goma Gringa (Metá Metá, Juçara Marçal...). O disco ainda conta com capa do artista Thiago Verdeee. Seu segundo disco, "Ubi Sunt", se encontra em fase de produção.

Designer, engraver, composer, musician, singer, author,… the artist Manu Maltez presents ‘O Rabequeiro Maneta e a Fúria da Natureza’ , a multidisciplinary project that combines different artistic languages: music, literature, drawing and animation.

'Cordel Noir' with erotic features, the project is presented in the format of an illustrated 108-page tale accompanied by two 7"inches of four songs each - compositions telling the main protagonist Rabequeiro Maneta's journey. A trans-forró adventure between city and sertão, feminine and masculine, man and animal.

Selected by Rumos Itaú Cultural 2016, the project was entirely conceptualized, developed and realized by Manu Maltez.
The artist wrote the story, drew the 100 pages of the book and composed the songs that he plays singing and playing acoustic and bass guitar along with the band Fúria da Natureza which features Siba, Assucena Assucena, Zé Pitoco, Vicente Barreto, Lulinha Alencar, Maria Beraldo, Alessandra Leão and Rafa Barreto.

To complete the picture, a short hand-drawn animation movie is in the final stages of production!

GG7-005 Manu Maltez "O Rabequeiro Maneta e a Fúria da Natureza" [snippet]

GOMA GRINGA DISCOS is a Brazilian, São Paulo based, record label that aims to promote forgotten music from the past and contemporary brazilian recording artists.
To achieve this goal the two partners Frédéric Thiphagne and Matthieu Hebrard are on one side, producing their own releases - re-issues projects and contemporary brazilian bands releases - and, on the other side, representing various record labels from Europe by launching Brazilian editions of their releases. GOMA GRINGA DISCOS creates thereby a cultural and musical bridge between Brazil and the rest of the world.
GOMA GRINGA DISCOS’s musical spectrum is vast but could be defined as focused on the so-called Tropical rhythms. Afrobeat, funk, cumbia, ethio-jazz, baião, afro-brazilian, carimbó, ska and ghanaian highlife are some of the styles that will be part of the label’s catalogue.
