go nogo – Things Ain’t Right 


After a couple of months „Sad“ turned out to be a happy ending in terms of approval for many listeners, go nogo embark on a new journey. Whereas its predecessor had sort of a broken beat element paired with delayed 16th notes on Eric’s guitar, „Things Ain’t Right“ is very downbeat and smoothly build around an acoustic backdrop. Strings and Rhodes make a solemn appeal to the listener and Fred Scholl’s singing is again in line with the hymnal character of „Sad“, but this time in a joyous vein. If „Things Aint Right", well then „Some Things Ain’t Too Right“, meaning „it can’t get any better“ – this simple philosophy is based on experiencing simple pleasures, like visiting friends you haven’t seen for a while. Musically the original version is a cross of Pink Floyd’s languid moments and 90s downbeat excursions from viennese figureheads like Tosca. 

The Lonely Smoker remodels the central Rhodes chords around an eight and a half minute puffed out Chill House groove that will eventually turn on the sun when it’s dark outside. Mattzid’s go slow version will take you back to the days of Jaffa’s „Elevator“, a classic Chillout-tune of Stereo Deluxe-fame. Just made for the lounge-chair-lovers. In contrast, London-based Evil Zed drops some U.K. – Breakbeat science with his Remix. He twists and turns the vocals after the break into a cut-up scratch orgy and delivers an oldschool spin that you would not expect. Patrick Talmann takes us back to the Deep House. Lush layers in the distance yield a perfect backdrop for Eric’s balearic guitar thrown in. Last but not least, Keenhouse picks the small synth line from the original’s middle section and pitches a quote from Fred to become an arty detail to his string-piano based composition. „Things Ain’t Right“ turns into a track of its own right, Thus we renamed it to „Take Off“.... Fasten your seatbelt!

The sound of revelation according to go nogo doesn't need no fallen angel or some beast to  ravage the world. What sounds much like Aleister Crowleys  dark satanic verses unveils itself as a brooding Indie Dance tune that will eventually turn into an uplifting chorus. Catchy as it may seem, The Devil Too raises some philosophical questions and ponders over the laws of nature. Although again different in texture, the key elements of go nogo are full in effect: delayed rythm guitars, chords from an electric bass, trance-like synth-patterns and a singer who’s trading tonality for attitude.

go nogo - And The Devil Too (low res)

Since 2012, go nogo have released a string of single tracks, which in the company of many assorted remixers have gained wide recognition. In many cases, renowned collaborators like Acid Washed, Skatebard, Kaito or Woolfy contributed versions, which were more than supportive for the original tunes. 
Eric Schemer and Fred Scholl have now decided, that the time has come to let five originals speak for themselves. Many songs accumulated over the years of which they have picked five to demonstrate go nogo’s full range of variety and influences. Every single tune tells a tale, wrapped up in sounds to support their narrative character – starting with the zap noise of changing tv channels in „New Folks“ and ending with the NASA-data check-up in „Apollo Go“. Singer and producer Fred Scholl paints musical pictures by using Eric’s electronically manipulated guitars on a shoegazerish canvas, adding dubbed-out sounds, grounded by different beats at various speed levels. 

There’s no sweetness to “Sweet Lullaby”, a rather creepy encounter of a killer who can’t let go of his beloved murdered victim. The mood is set by an eerie loop running backwards, a leftover from a session with Lisa Stroeckens (see “Black Hole” by The Robot Scientists, EDR 001). Building the tension with creepy vocal effects and string-samples, the psychedelic effect is full-on, when Eric’s guitar and Fred’s singing mingle to yield a Doors-like flavor.

Having deviated from their usual procedure of delivering one track with a selection of remixes, go nogo’s recent E.P. ‚New Folks’ was their first original only-release. Back then, Fred Scholl and Eric Schemer were already planning to give the three vocal tracks of the E.P. to some of Emerald & Doreen finest artists plus a very special guest to have them adding another twist. Due to it’s outstanding catchiness, three remixers had a go on the title track who wrapped the majestic tune up in pop. 
Another duo which debuted on Emerald & Doreen with their „Time To Love & Wanderer“-E.P. is Go Satta. They hit the nail to the head with a fantastic blend of disco, electronica, dub, and funk, getting a lot of praise by the indie press and blogosphere. Their hold on the original ‚New Folks’ is a warm, breezy sing-a-long- type of tune in the early Kid Loco-vein. Carried away by a funky guitar lick and extra-charming add-libbings of singer Moriah, it has become that type of fingersnappy-happy song you want to go on forever.

The first offering comes from the drummer of British electro-pop giants OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark), Mal Holmes, who has shown a keen interest in a corporation with the label in the first place. Being a great fan of U.K. synthpop from the 80s, Fred Scholl was delighted to hear someone having his composition re-modelled by someone who worked on some of his favorite albums. Consequently the three-and-a-half-minute remix is a synth-poppy-catchy-as-catch-can rendition with a lustre that opens the gates to a wider audience.

"Not To Be Missed" describes the hurtful sentiments of being ditched. It is the most skeletal, experimental, sentimental and balladry track go nogo has ever delivered , thus the perfect bookend of the album.
After a totally brooding but misleading intro that features the reversed background singing of the second chorus, the actual track is opening with a minimal rendition of the refrain, followed by an equally spare verse. The background humming returns and creates a somewhat solemn atmosphere before a third part is shifting towards a plaintive emotional climax, boosted by a driving Moog-Bass. A second verse wich is devoid of instrumentation but Rhodes chords marks a breakdown. The consequent purely instrumental build-up leads into a third chorus that is supported by all the featured instruments the most blissful.

Not To Be Missed

At our times of breaking news at a breakneck speed, there needs to be a soundtrack to the gunfire sensations that dull our senses. We have arrived at a moment in time where the observer does not have any sentiments towards the actual cause for the news but a habitual facebook dismay post. The most cynical aspect is the appetite for sensations that have the most shock value, fed by a trigger-happy buzz media that can't get enough clicks. The announcement that there will  be something happening beyond the spectacular is nothing but banging the drum to attract attention. Despite of the nasty subject matter, "Breaking News" is a rather sweet and soothing pop tune that is influenced by the XX, London Grammar and Beach House. In contrast to the rather bouncy House groove and the repetitive guitar triad, the scenario is somewhat creepily set with the sounds of an electrocardiogram and the heartbeat failure.

Published as a single with remixes on Emerald & Doreen in 2013, "And The Devil 2" has found a lot of listeners already. Serving as the opener of the album "Main Course", it was the only classic song whose story was not to told to the wide audience envisaged, as go nogo saw more potential in their "beloved one"... The mighty guitar chords which set the dark tone for the not so satanic tune are dissolved into an electrified update. The synth-studded approach boasts a bouncier beat, arpeggios, pad sounds and deeper basement. The story that evolves around the tune is the religious concept of good and evil that is beyond ridicule, because it is the concept of the human being projected onto a fictional character who is not only with us but who is a human trait. So the whole prospect of escaping human nature by being righteous and zealous is self-betrayal.

"Things ain't right" but a lot of them definitely are... like this new go nogo song. "It is like Wonderwall in space," as Fred Scholl exclaimed when he received a loose jam of Eric Schemer, who originally intended to write a Balearic theme for TRS on his new acoustic guitar. Once again, Fred Scholl re-modelled the parts and added a duboliscious Viennese flavour to the whole affair. What you hear is like Blur meeting Kruder + Dorfmeister for a ride on the Ferris wheel. No need to say that those two artistic outfits have had a lot of impact on go nogo.

Spinning the idea to marry songwriting with dancefloor qualities, it was time for Markus 'Fred' Scholl to open another chapter in his musical career. Together with befriended guitarist Eric, go nogo came to existence as a project that does convey the roots of the singer and composer. Influenced by the time of being a drummer in a group that dug the Madchester sound, go nogo has a touch of the late eighties and early nineties Britisch indiepop scene. Together with his knack for electronic music and various influences that he draws from his huge record collection, Markus ‚Fred’ Scholl creates something different with every song.  "Mr. go nogo" lives in Berlin, working as a show host for the radio station BLN.FM and on various other projects. Eric is co-owners of Emerald and Doreen Recordings together with Markus Schneider from The Robot Scientists.
