Written by Leiber & Stoller, It was initially recorded by R&B duo, Willy & Ruth, in 1954, then by Elvis in  1956. The genius of Lieber's lyrics were that they usually finished early leaving room for theatrics, something Elvis excelled in.

900 Miles  was first recorded and released by Fiddlin' John Carson in 1924. A traditional folk song recorded by numerous musicians.  Over 115 cover versions or more from artists such as Barbara Dane (great version), Bob Dylan, Dion, Bert Jansch and Woody Guthrie recorded it. My version is about a hobo catching his last train home. This is called the West Train. For my first seventeen years I grew up in a small house on a horse farm a few hundred feet away from the C&NW line in rural Illinois. Now in my 50s with a hard drive full of memories - I dream of hopping a freight train whenever I see one and for it to take me to my old family house next to the tracks where my mom would be in the pasture with her horses. Living there I always knew which trains were coming or passing by the way the trains would rumble and rattle the house. If the pots in the kitchen were clinking a big slow freighter was headed east towards the Barrington rail yard outside of Chicago. For me hopping night trains in the summer was a way to escape many things.

In an article that appears with a transcription of this folk song, Cisco Houston writes: 

“A folk song is a way of singing out the news—news of a wedding, a murder—good times or bad times—good people and bad people. It’s one way of making a record of memorable things that happened. In the days before newspapers, and among people who couldn’t have read them even if they existed, the folk song was a kind of chronicle and running commentary on the times. Many of them have lived for years, while nothing is more dead than yesterday’s newspapers. The folk songs and story ballads were not the most accurate kind of history of course, because once the event, whatever it was, had been recorded, generations of singers went on elaborating and changing the song— smoothing it out, or shaping it up to suit their own ideas of how the event might have happened. Often, the event which started the song was blurred or lost as time went on. The song then took on its own independent life. Aristotle said in his poetics, that art is truer than history because it shows what should have happened rather than simply what did happen.”

A Fucked Up Lovesong

Our new single 'Tennessee' is a song we wrote after returning from finishing off our second record on Nashville's Music Row. When we returned we had a strange mix of feelings - we wanted to be a part of the Nashville scene but we knew we were never really from that world - and we saw loads of other UK artists that wanted so much to be a part of that scene that they built up a pastiche of it here in the UK. We've tried to reflect this conflict whilst staying true to our roots.
