Aloner

It's impossible to talk about the sound of DjRUM without using the word cinematic. Whatever he does, it has a feeling of grand importance, widescreen elegance and moving emotion that elevates it way above a dance floor soundtrack. Throughout the course of his career, the UK artist has drawn on downtempo, blurred the lines between drum & bass and dubstep and always imbued his music with spoken words snippets, piano and chamber instruments. His Portrait With Firewood album was a real high-water mark in 2018, and last year his latest outing on R&S once again managed to draw on every aspect of electronic music and come up with something all his own. 

His mix for us this week is a perfect ethereal rave that finds plenty of beauty in the sparse rhythms he draws on from the worlds of garage, techno and drum & bass. There is a delicacy and elegance throughout, even when the beats hit hard and fast as they do at the overdriven and manic mid point. The amen breaks come thick and fast after that, but eventually melt away to propulsive ambient soundscapes that suspend you in time and space. Blissful.

"Ok yes… the world is sicker than ever, but that doesn't mean we get to stop.

The past months have seen long overdue eruptions of sadness and rage directed at bloated, militarized, racist police forces and iniquitous government spending around the world. The puzzle pieces are assembling and fresh eyes are examining corrupt practices that Black & brown communities have criticized for decades. It is time to defund the police and invest in communities that have been systemically attacked.

For the third volume of Physically Sick, we are focusing on local efforts and raising money for Equality For Flatbush, an organization that has been fighting racist police abuse and gentrification since 2013. Equality For Flatbush mobilizes direct aid when necessary, recently ensuring Brooklyn residents have groceries and supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Techno, house, and all the sounds at the root of electronic dance music, are born from Black communities. Dance music can only be sustained by an inclusive joy for the marginalized and the dispossessed. As we rally in support of Black lives, the struggles against police violence, and inequality, it is the responsibility of every person, from DJs to dancers, not to let things slide back to business as usual.

Physically Sick 3 is a fundraising compilation from Discwoman & Allergy Season curated by Frankie Decaiza Hutchinson, Umfang, and Physical Therapy. Clemency presents References (Remixed) - three re-interpretations of her debut EP by Perko, Boofy and Jennifer Walton. 

Each remix builds on the sparse dissonant sounds of Clemency’s original production into three heavyweight soundsystem workouts. 

Perko works ‘Testimony’ into a wriggling, hypnotic drum workout; 
Boofy leans into ‘Biblical Names’’ subby rhythmic momentum; 
Jennifer Walton pairs ‘Mimic Animals That Are Easy to Love’s menacing sirens with apocalyptic 303s and unforgiving percussion. 

References was originally released with a collection of Clemency’s own personal references - including poetry, fiction, coordinates and cosmetics - that inspired the record. References (Remixed) comes with new references from each remixer to accompany their interpretations.

Testimony (Perko Remix)

Hessle Audio welcome @laksauk to the label with three tracks of rowdy and forward-thinking dance music, following his last release on Timedance in September.

On the A-side, ‘Fire Kit’ sees the London-based producer and DJ approaching his sound from a different direction, with dancehall infused percussion offset by enveloping layers of sub-bass warmth at 95bpm. The B side jacks up the tempo with a raucous energy as the temperature drops to below freezing. Basslines rumble in ‘Belly Brocka’ and ‘T’s Tent’ like an approaching storm and snares lash through the mix like ice picks, with the broken rhythmic energy driving the dance forward in 2021 and beyond.

Running the club night and monthly NTS show ‘re:lax’ with re:ni, Laksa has been consistently pushing bass mutations since his early EPs on Beneath’s Mistry label. A Bristol bass bobbler at heart, his hybrid sound has found a home on many respected labels such as Timedance, Ilian Tape and Whities, cementing his place amongst the latest UK talent.

“As much as I’ve tried to separate myself from my national identity throughout the years, there was something very cathartic and educational about putting together this mix. Not wanting to focus on a specific genre, and not wanting to do a dance mix, I needed to find some conceptual thread throughout that made sense to me - and it slowly emerged directly through reflections on the experience of being from Iceland and it’s weird mixture of bright beauty and weird unnerving darkness. In my search for material tracks popped up that directly referenced our own insecurities of being a small nation, our independence, our natural phenomenons, our ancestral lineage and other things. I also managed to include tracks from the present and the past, from punk, electro, experimental and movie scoring, from friends and strangers, released and unreleased and also managed to include some of our most beloved wordsmiths and weirdos from different time periods. I step away from this project with a renewed appreciation for the absolute sheer luck that it is being from Iceland, despite all it’s faults and fantastical misrepresentations.” - Bergen
