'With their second vinyl release of 2013 Goon Club Allstars continue to carve out their own space in club-focused music, with Mssingno’s haunting debut 12” EP pitting cold, melodic synths and deftly cut vocal samples against growling basslines and off-kilter drum patterns. As well as being responsible for the huge ‘Brandy Flip’, a track played out across radio and clubs through 2013, last year the London-based producer scored some deserved attention producing ‘Drugs Don’t Work’ for masked Tottenham MC Cas (formerly Castro). His icy, romantic flip of ‘The Verve’ tune of the same name provided the ideal backdrop for a rare glimpse into Cas’ self-inflicted weaknesses and here proves to be just as effective at stirring the emotions without the aid of a vocal narrative.

Whether he’s toying with the slick ‘n’ sensual, as is unashamedly evident on the heated 808-driven opener ‘Skeezers’, or bittersweet quasi-R&B twisters on one of the year’s more unlikely watery-eyed earworms ‘XE2’, Mssingno’s first excursion on wax is earnestly dedicated to the feels; all of them. Case in point: ‘XE3’s weary-hands-in-the-air sunrise synths juxtaposed perfectly by ‘124th’s hood-up cap-down gulliness. 

It may be a dangerously well-trodden arena, blending bold synths with pitch-bended vocals, but few producers in the last few years can hold a candle to Mssingno’s craftsmanship and knack for progression. Simply put, Mssingno is one of those rare ones, the ones that leave a mark and his debut serves as a bold statement of intent for both himself, and the rest of the Goons.'

Rudeboyz are Massive Q, Andile-T and Menchess from Durban. They make Gqom (or Gqomu or Igqom); raw, dark and hypnotic South African house music rooted in the townships of Durban, and shared with the world via the internet and social media. Gqom blares out at makeshift clubs, taxis and shopping malls; it is the music in Durban. Gqom roughly translated from Zulu to ‘Bang’ or ‘Hit’ - It’s uncompromising and stripped back music geared for the dancefloor. 

This EP has been a long time coming. Internet in Durban is woeful, which explains why a lot of tunes are at lower bit rates and equally why this release has been so long in the making. 

The EP opens with Get Down - the most direct and punishing of the four tracks with a punching synth and unrelenting kicks that do not deviate from their rhythm or their cause. 

Mercedes Song and Mitsubishi Song are odes to legendary presses of the pills that fuel the parties that run through the night. They roll for six unsettling minutes a piece - a long ominous drone underpinning the pounding beats. On Mercedes Song TD Snax adds to the unease as he shouts and yelps in Zulu: “Yaze yangibamba weeh yaze yangibamba” - "This Mercedes has got me so high, this is my Mercedes.” Mitsubishi Song, one of the biggest Gqom tracks of 2013, mirrors this unease switching between cascading toms and jolting, stuttering rhythms, cowbells and bird tweets.

Sambuka Dance is an ode to a very different poison and its disorientating arrangement is reminiscent of its effects. A jarring, angry chant harasses incessantly transforming the track into a full body experience.

As Jumping Back Slash eloquently put “Gqom feels like music you’ve been listening to for years”. It is a ghostly cousin of sounds it touches on - brash, abrasive music with no inhibitions.

KG (@karennyamekg) returns to London's GCA (@goon-club-allstars) this month with a bangin' new release.

Of late she's been linking with Scratcha DVA (under his Scratchclart alias) over on Hyperdub, joining the Club Djembe crew over on their latest comp and just, you know, being a legend. But we're delighted she's back once again on one of our fav local labels with her 'Sensei' EP – a four-tracker with three fresh cuts and a quest?onmarc remix, too

Lithuanian producer Mantas Povilaika (aka DJ JM) is the latest artist to release on the consistently excellent Goon Club Allstars, following the massive 'Sensei' EP by UK funky queen KG. The producer has previously dropped EPs on Nervous Horizon (with 'No Days Off') and Even The Strong, and his most recently offering finds him approaching the club in a more uplifting manner than his previous, darker output suggested. 'XD Remix', which we're premiering below, uses utilitarian hard drum patterns with skittering rave interludes and hands-in-the-air chords. “'XD' and 'XD Remix' are the euphoric rave tracks which are supposed to be in sync with the club lights when they go from dark to bright or... in sync with waking up early in an excellent mood!,” DJ JM says. "It’s “more positive, more bright, more fun”. The EP is out later this month, and arrives with an Angel D'Lite remix for added rave goodness.

The second release for JM in 2020, the XD EP sees two sides of JM’s production neatly split across 4 tracks. JM explains “The 'XD' EP selection for me personally is a public juxtaposition of two JMs club music approaches. If you listen to it fully, you can clearly feel the twofold concept of the record, one side is something (for those who already listened to my music before) easily recognizable as JM.”
