Multicultural sound synesthesias at sight. For this tropicaldo we have hand-picked a guest who can hardly say exactly where she came from. A nomad driven by a hunger for curation and a yearning to spread music around the globe.
A “borderless” New Yorker, Ani Phoebe has contributed to music communities from Rio de Janeiro to New Delhi to Hong Kong. She is the co-founder of Bad Times Disco (HK), an online and pop up record shop in Hong Kong, also runs the Parallel Worlds radio show on The Lot Radio (NY). She draws her sets from cosmic, breaks, old school hip-hop, balearic, she also leans towards the weird and oddball side of electronic music. 
"I've been researching the songs for this set for probably two years now. In 2019, I left Rio de Janeiro for a DIY tour that spanned three continents and ended up with a move to Hong Kong in part because of the pandemic. This mix is made up of international "conceptions" of Brazil. From 80s German synth pop calling itself samba and singing in accented Portuguese to an Israeli album of reimagined Jorge Ben to an Indonesian song about Rio de Janeiro, it is clear that Brazil, has had an enormous influence on experimental, synth-pop, electronic dance, and jazz music in many countries around the world. While there are stereotypes, there are also interesting cultural fusions, and cross-border migrations. In a way, this mix is different from the music that I would typically DJ, but I enjoyed doing this kind of research so much that I'm already ready to do more of this series. I hope this mix can show Brazilians and non-Brazilians alike that Brazilian music has had a huge impact on people around the world, and I very much hope that it can continue to do so beyond the oversized era of samba, bossa nova, and MPB some decades ago."

Uma nova iorquina sem fronteiras, Ani Phoebe já contribuiu para a comunidade musical de lugares como Rio de Janeiro, Nova Délhi e Hong Kong. Cofundadora da Bad Times Disco (HK), uma loja pop up online de Hong Kong; também comanda o programa de rádio Parallel Worlds no famoso The Lot Radio (NY). Seu estilo transita entre o cosmic, break, old school hip-hop e balearico, Ani também possui uma forte inclinação para um lado mais excêntrico da música eletrônica.
“Eu venho pesquisando as músicas desse set provavelmente há 2 anos. Em 2019, quando deixei o Rio, parti para uma turnê independente que abrangeu três continentes e se encerrou com minha mudança para Hong Kong, em parte por causa da pandemia. Esse mix é feito de conceitos internacionais do Brasil. De Synth Pop alemão dos anos 80 que se autointitulam samba e cantam com sotaque português, a um álbum Israelita reimaginado de Jorge Bem até uma música indonésia sobre o Rio de Janeiro e, fica claro, que o Brasil, tem uma enorme influência na música experimental, synth pop, electronic dance e jazz em muitos países ao redor do mundo.
Simultaneamente há estereótipos, mas há também interessantes fusões culturais que transcendem as fronteiras. De certa forma, esse mix é diferente da música que eu tipicamente discotecaria, mas eu me diverti tanto realizando esse tipo de pesquisa que estou pronta para fazer mais desses tipos de sets. Eu espero que esse mix possa mostrar para brasileiros e estrangeiros que a música brasileira tem um impacto gigantesco nas pessoas ao redor do mundo, e eu espero muito que ainda consiga continuar impactando, para além da grande era do samba, bossa nova, MPB e outras mais.”

Para o seu mix da Alter, o cara dispõe uma imersão de posicionamentos questionadores através de batidas inconformadas e cheias de ritmos.

Sua trilha musical transita bem entre as décadas de 80 e 90, percorrendo composições vivas em temas sociais e religiosos do universo afro-brasileiro e da Diáspora Africana.

Aside from being a DJ, Gustavo Keno, originally from São Paulo and based in Rio de Janeiro is graduated in History which led him to a critic awareness that is translated straight into his music. 
His music moves between the 80s and the 90s, wandering from bright and alive compositions founded in social and religious themes from the Afro-Brazilian and African Diaspora ethos. 
For this podcast, Keno demonstrates an immersion of a questioning positioning throughout his defiant lyrics and bold beats. 
Gustavo also manages a Youtube channel where the digger shares his musical (re)disclosures called “Juntos com Certeza”.

Our new resident Fruno explores Brazil's most exciting upcoming talents in his series called "Seiva". Seiva, translated sap, is the liquid that contains nutrients and circulates inside a plant. His residency can be considered a plant, very strong and robust, complementing the great vegetation in Brazil. The artists and their material would be the lifeblood that flows within this great living organ, which is Brazilian music!

In his first instalment of Seiva, Fruno invites Giba. Giba is an oceanographer by profession, contact with nature has always been part of his daily life. In addition, he's a resident of Banzeiro Coletivo, providing local residents with the best electronic beats from a new wave of Brazilian DJs. Giba's research into Brazil's oceans and music just shows his engagement with his roots.

The mix is full of whaling elements, dreamy house, boogie, jazz and bossa nova, showing the richness of smooth and intense Brazilian rhythms.
