Reputations bestowed upon entire cities and their citizens can be dangerously misleading, even if grounded in some aspects that are actually embraced as an essential part of a shared local identity. Take the Southern Brasilian metropolis of Curitiba as an example: its general environment is deemed as one of the coldest in the country due to both the average temperatures that characterise its weather throughout the year and the overall population’s renownedly aloof demeanour, especially towards foreigners. But, as stereotypes usually do, taking these considerations at face value would make us ignore the exquisitely fascinating facets that make this city a unique place, warm and welcoming in its own quite endearing way. And, in this particular case, we’d all tragically end up missing out on the spectacular work done by some of its most talented fun loving locals. Endeavours such as Alter Disco, the brainchild of our guest for this episode alongside a close team of curitibanos who share a similarly feverish devotion for worldly rhythms. A party that helped reconfigure the town’s nightlife, redefine its place in Brasil’s dancing landscape and restore its esteem as a cosmopolitan destination for music aficionados from all over. Phil Mill incarnates much of what made their nights a special affair with his penchant for colourful eclecticism focussed on dancefloor frolics and his contribution for our series conjures much of that same delicious energy in a delightful mix that will certainly make us all yearn for attending at least one of their events.
