The ability that fruits hold to become allegories for pretty much anything humans do seems to be endless. Probably because their inherent qualities invite almost all of our sensory devices to experience what they have to offer, hence serving as rich metaphors for what we strive to do best with our innermost energies. Sources of both nourishment and pleasure, they are nearly ubiquitous in how we experience the world around us and mobilise a gamut of our faculties in order to be perceived. However, while we can smell, taste, touch and see the qualities of any pome, the very sense that provides the leitmotif for the artform we elevate through this series plays a minor role in our enjoyment of these gifts from nature. We all can certainly agree that 'hearing produce' is an outlandish notion as much as it is a rather unattainable proposition, but one that comes to fruition when we listen to the wonderful palette of sounds created by this aptly named artist we are honoured to guest. A gifted producer and careful selector, Ponkan is part of the extended family we keep and has contributed with his many talents to the aural abundance we boast. And what we have in this episode is a feast for each of our senses: a juicy mix filled with delicious textures that exudes a festive aroma aimed at pleasing our ears as much as our bodies. Still, one could ask where sight plays a part in this whole affair, sadly ignoring the wonderfully fitting layout and this accompanying text. We can only hope it all comes together and the latter doesn't get in the way of anyone's enjoyment of such a delightful offering.

All these tracks were moments of wow I experienced on dancefloors in the Netherlands, Croatia, Spain, Belgium and even Japan & Australia all the way back in 2016-18. Most of these tracks are reissues. With these “known” tracks, I’m telling the story of my musical journey & inspirations, with some space echo added.

A Tribute To The Greats - Moments of Collective Nostalgia

Deodaat, known for his infectious disco grooves and deep crate of vibrant records, he masterfully weaves together sounds inspired by South African, Latin, and Brazilian rhythms, with percussion as the heartbeat of his genre-blending sets. With an ear for storytelling, Deodaat believes each track carries its own message, and his sets create a narrative that connects the crowd.

Recently returning from a journey to France, Spain, and Portugal, where he discovered the music history of these countries, with a focus on the 1970’s disco revolution, collected records in their context, and met inspiring music lovers, Deodaat has woven these experiences into his musical diary published on Youtube called "Deodaat's Diary".

Last year, Deodaat’s vibrant sound captivated Utrecht and Amsterdam with performances at NAR Café der Kunsten, HappyFeelings, UUnited Festival at Tivoli, Vechtclub (U?), HuisVanIemandAnders, and soon, Rotterdam’s Operator Radio. As the programmer of Birdcage Radio, he finds inspiration in supporting emerging talent. Through Plaatjes&Maatjes Soundsystem, which he co-founded, Deodaat and his friends unite diverse Utrecht artists, sharing energetic, feel-good club music that brings people together on the dance floor.

Today he will take you on an adventure across the heart of South-African Pantsula. Journey through the discovery and evolution of electronic sounds in South African music, from the vibrant tones of Champeta, Bubblegum Disco, and Kwaito to the high-energy rhythms of Pantsula and Tribal House.

Platforms such as this one thrive because the elements that make it possible defy all kinds of distances. Apart from what the internet itself has allowed us to cover in that regard over the past decades, the music we feature helps us cover the vastness of many geographic territories and a variety of demographic generations. In the end, what is really important here is the confluence it might facilitate than any influence it could disseminate among both artists and audience. It is a meeting point of tastes as much as it is a melting pot of desires, where sensorial stimulation and cultural circulation happen at the same level and intensity allowing for spectacular things to happen at each episode. And this one is no exception, a delightful trip through exquisite rhythmic patterns and exciting harmonic structures helmed by one of the most gifted talents hailing from the fertile dancefloors found in the Brasilian South. A likeminded artist and kindred spirit, Kika not only fits perfectly in the colourful family of worldwide selectors congregated in this place by their stellar contributions, but elevates it with her strong sensibility and delicate dexterity.

Sometimes we happen to take some of the fundamental aspects that guide our main mission for which this platform is a crucial resource for granted, even if we never underestimate their place in what makes it something singular amid the multitude of similar content that can be found online. Take eclecticism for example, a quintessential characteristic of every single contribution to the series and an overall quality that is pursued by each of the guests we have in the construction of their deeply personal musical narratives. Not a mean feat, if we take into account the sheer diversity of rhythmic patterns and harmonic structures involved that need to be concatenated cohesively or, at the very least, sequenced harmoniously to be able to engulf us in its motional thrust and emotional pull. The greatness of all the mixes featured in this collection lies in the fact that they rely mostly on both a delicate play of moods and an intricate balance of forces, managing to harness their energy and use it towards stimulating our bodies, exciting our senses, enticing our minds and warming our hearts in the process. This episode is no exception, quite the opposite, as Lago brings his singular selective sensibility and elegant use of skills to weave an enthralling thread of gliding grooves that intertwine with alluring melodies from all over the globe.

As far as metaphors go, calling this platform a port of sorts wouldn't be much of a stretch. Both offer a meeting place for people from all over, a replenishing stop before long journeys and a space for many activities yearned by most human beings: mixture of passions, crisscrossing of cultures, exchange of wealth, nurturing of debauchery and many others. Take Salvador, for instance, first Brazilian capital and one of its main posts for some of the vilest trade ever performed by mankind. But, at the same time and for that very reason, the stronghold of the country’s African traditions, which is why what was created there became one of the richest musical environments on the planet. A pristine example of how our creativity can turn pain into something universally understood that can be widely enjoyed and thoroughly appreciated. Such a powerful transmutational dynamic has been reproduced at a smaller scale in every dancefloor and across radio waves on this side of the Atlantic for the best part of the past century. The same alchemy that we strive to reiterate, not merely replicate at every episode, especially when we have a gifted guest hailing from that harbour of historical heritages. Ubunto is not just one of its finest artists, but a sagacious selector whose hectic and eclectic mixes are endless sources of danceable energy and aural delight.

These texts are meant to be a sort of introduction as much as they serve as a kind of statement of intentions, from the hosts and guests alike: a nice prelude to the musical message the latter aims at conveying as much as the former means to disseminate. Given the source material, there is a recurrence of themes and terms, something whoever follows this platform might have noticed long ago. We constantly praise guests for being prolific, we often mention abundance, we frequently talk of wealth and richness, and so on. But what lies behind these concepts is an idea that becomes fundamentally obvious whenever we remember the fact that we are talking about culture and especially when we realise that we do it through one of its most fertile forms. So, when we welcome an artist that fully personifies all of these principles, from moniker to musicality, it is inevitable to see it as an augur of sorts. Ceres Yo embodies all of the above, adding prowess and eclecticism to the mix, as she does to this one gracing our series in this episode and everything else she’s involved with. Here we are offered an odyssey across a rhythmic itinerary as varied as it is enthralling.

This channel has always been more about affluence than influence. A place of rhythmic abundance and melodic opulence that simply aims at being a steady link between artists and audience in order to maintain a vast musical ecosystem that thrives across the globe. Nevertheless, it is but one among many forms through which our collective manifests its quintessential purpose of connecting the basic elements of the musical experience. This multifarious presence allowed us to nurture an extensive network of likeminded, gifted and prolific talent across many platforms. Some of these have traced their path across locations as diverse as the origins and destinations of the sounds we disseminate here, boasting an itinerary that crisscrosses some of the main cities where cutting edge dance music is prolifically made and properly enjoyed. A Brazilian native, Alexia Glensy has called many places her home and embraced many genres as her own through the years, both having played a crucial role in informing her tastes and shaping her talents to the eclectic excellence she presents in the blinding mix that graces our current episode. One that is itself an accurate metaphor for her trajectory, a perfect example of her sound and a precious addition to the series.

Stepping up to the decks this month for the latest addition to the Phonica Mix Series is Melbourne's Bell Towers. We were first introduced to Rohan's records back in 2013 when he released 'Tonight I'm Flying' for Prins Thomas' Full Pup sub-label. Since then he's become one of Public Possession's most prolific producers. Before relocating to London he cut his teeth throwing the infamous Bamboo Musik parties that were legendary for their elaborate themes and hedonistic atmosphere and now Rohan seems to bring the Bamboo vibe with everywhere he plays. Earlier this year the Phonica crew were lucky enough to catch him playing for ReviveHER and his set is still fresh in our minds for the good-time vibes, daring track selection and bold dance moves. We are so proud to have in interview one of our favorites italo djs, she is Diana Chan Mcnally @automatic-amore based in Toronto, Canada. It's time to meet her a little more with a good interview! Check it out!

Automaticamore in one word?

Fastidious.

What does ‘ITALO DISCO’’ mean for you?

Fun, funny, and fantastic.

Why did you choose ‘Automaticamore’’ as a name?

I didn’t! It was the name of my radio show, and then people started calling me DJ Automaticamore. Previously I was just DJ Diana McNally (I know – very dull).

Past or Future?

Both! A better future can only be informed by attention to the past, including all of its successes and faults.

What do you do apart from digging and being a DJ?

I am a community worker. I coordinate resources and opportunities for 51 drop-in centres in Toronto serving people experiencing homelessness. I also work frontline in one of these centres, and am an activist around issues of homelessness.

What are some of the current world issues you think about the most?

Envisioning a post-Capitalist world that is inclusive and humane. That society only exists through cooperation and an understanding of the collective good; yet, we are more divided than ever.

With all your passion and your fantastic YouTube channel, how did your first contact with Italo occur?

Through friends’ local DJ nights! I recall that they played Moroder, Alexander Robotnick, and Black Devil, as well as ‘newer’, Italo-influenced acts like Glass Candy.

Favorite channel from YouTube for digging Italo?

Moscu ION, just because it kind of isn’t curated, so you can dig around through an unsorted mass of Italo.

Favorite pizza?

Margherita, hands-down. But … Hawaiian pizza was invented in Canada, and I kind of like it! With added jalapenos.

Favorite vinyl?

Too hard to choose! Right now, Diviacchi - Waiting For Heaven. I come back to this record a lot, and it’s emotional and well-produced.

Most wanted record?

Right now? Tres – Smile on My Face. And … I never buy it, because it’s expensive and ridiculous, but Avenida 29 – It’s Pizza Time.

What is your process when creating a mix?

I usually will start with a mood or feeling, and I’ll fit together songs that somehow capture that feeling and play around with different records, in different orders, until it makes sense to me. Then I record myself playing live.

What was the first record you bought?

Madonna – The Immaculate Collection on cassette, no less.

Who was the first musician that influenced you? What other genres have influenced you?

Madonna, most definitely. I’m also influenced by New Wave, electro, post-punk, synthpop, freestyle, and Canadian disco.

Do you think the Italo world is dead?

Not while I’m alive, it isn’t!

What do you think about the new Italo producers?

I don’t know much about many of them, to be honest. It’s not because I actively dislike new music, I’m just busy digging through the 1980s!

Best Italo record labels from 80’s?

It’s not universally great, but I like FDT, an Il Discotto sublabel.  I also like Out Records, which is a sublabel of Discomagic, and very collectible.

New favorite track?

… as in new music? Again, I don’t know much, but I really like Mozaika – Drive. 

Any news regarding tours?

Not until there is some sense of what the impacts of COVID are! That said, I’m hoping to come to Europe next spring.

What did you want to express in this mix?

I just spent a week on the beach (albeit a Canadian beach), and so I wanted to capture that feeling of summer and sun. Also the beach I was on was clothing optional, and covered in booze, so there were many ridiculous and funny things happening. This mix hopefully reflects that humour.
