fragments of a journey #2

This is a bit different from my usual 'style', whatever that is :-), but I felt inspired by a dear friend, Milco Huisman [a brilliant and talented flute player], and said that I would try to create a piece whilst I have lost partial hearing [temporary we hope!], and see what the outcome was. This is it. I can 'hear' it, but only just enough to know the feeling I wanted to convey, though not even sure if I did this

I played by feeling more than hearing and just 'prayed' that volumes, mixing and sounds were ok, LOL

So a BIG Thank You Milco! :-)

(and also for the wonderful support from Erik Tavis [Melotone], Ian Gray [The Subwave Network, UK], Miles [Strange Meat] and of course John Styles [OneVision CrossWorlds], who have also offered to help out,  while I either adapt to this hearing impairment, or get it back - thank you so much, and others, too many to mention!) :-)

Thus, I would truly value your feedback :-)
… and wish me luck in regaining my full hearing soon! So I can hear everyone's creations properly too! I am looking forward to it!  :-)

[Piano / Dramatic / Thoughtful] - "Lifeline"

This track is a special release for the first annual "Piano Day" (a new holiday invented by Nils Frahm). It incorporates sounds from my old Yamaha upright piano in a few different ways: First I played it (of course), then I sampled the piano and manipulated those samples to create some of the ambient effects you hear. Hopefully this helps you to hear the piano in new ways (as it did for me).

"Ellipsis" is based on the idea of waiting for something even though you don't know exactly what you're waiting for. Most of the elements for this piece were recorded during a trip to Kitimat in Northern BC. In many ways, Kitimat is a town in waiting – waiting for the city workers strike to end; waiting to see if new industries will come to the region or not; waiting for spring to finally arrive in full. This piece is my attempt to capture that feeling of collective waiting and anticipation.

Just a simple improvisation on my close-miked upright piano. More of this vibe coming this fall!
