In case you’re wondering why the track is called what it is then I cannot tell a lie. it’s all Gordon’s fault.  I was having an email conversation with him about life, the universe and everything when, for no reason I could easily glean at the time, he said “I’ve got to go and walk to Asda in the fog". I wasn’t sure if he meant he could only walk to Asda if there was fog or that he just needed a walk in the fog and Asda was as welcoming a place to go as anywhere else or, more simply, that he had to get some groceries and Asda was the nearest and most convenient place to go in such inclement weather. Whatever the reason, my immediate thought was “What a great title for a song…”.

There’s certainly no shortage of songs about Covid-19 but I just couldn’t resist the temptation Gord had inadvertently sent my way to vent some of my Covid frustrations.  If you chance read the lyrics and aren’t from the UK, I should explain that all of the words in capital letters are the names of UK supermarket chain stores.  You may also be wondering why I mentioned the Royal Yacht so, for those of you that hadn’t heard, our wonderful government, in the midst of the pandemic and the financial constraints it was placing on the country, announced that it was commissioning the building of a new one at a cost of somewhere around 200 million pounds.  Isn’t it good to know they have their fingers firmly on the pulse of public spending at times like these?

For some time now, Gal and myself have wanted to work on a track with both Gord and Arkestar and for many reasons, this particular song seemed to lend itself really well to the idea.  We’d therefore both like to thank them for lending their unrelentingly brilliant skills and commitment to the entire project and for making it such a complete pleasure to work on. The 8th instalment and one of the few energetic, uptempo, passages of the album {Roderick's anguished exposition of weltanschauung in (4)being the other notable 'quick section' }
Poe refers on several occasions to life in the House of Usher as being akin to an opiated afterdream, suggesting a slow, inexorable slide into a semi-conscious state of being, incapable of distinguishing between dreams and actuality.
In keeping with the 'self fulfilling prophecy' I mentioned in the notes of (6) 'The Haunted Palace', it seems as if Roderick expects and welcomes the storm, pacing around in an agitated state of delirious hilarity
He regards it as a kind of punishment  - an Old Testament style day of atonement.
Viewing it as 'the beginning of the end' perhaps?

The tempo is exactly double that of the previous track's outro. 
What a strange coincidence.

I'm very familiar with Gary's energetic hard-new-wave drumming capabilities from Bluebottles and I was delighted when he agreed to take on "The Storm".
He drums up a storm in every sense of the phrase. Top job Gary.
I've aimed for a similar Bluebottles 80s gated-reverb, tape saturated sound, albeit in a different setting.

Not so long ago, Bri’s wife and kids found an old box of reel-to-reel tapes whilst clearing out their garage.  On one of them we found this, a song we believed had been ‘lost’.  It was like finding buried treasure.  
We owe a big thank you to Shek Kamari at Core Arts (https://soundcloud.com/coreartsmusic) for all his help in restoring the old 4-track tape to it’s original clarity.

I discovered at my brother’s funeral that one of the most difficult things to deal with was having a daughter who is sobbing her heart out about her uncle Brian when you are sobbing your heart out about your brother Brian and she is looking to her Dad for some help and, if possible, an explanation. No explanation could possibly quell such tears but, as her Dad, I’ll always be there to love and help her in any way I can.

A few days after the funeral, Charlotte was still very upset, saying to me “I’m really missing him again”.  When I’m finding times difficult, I have a tendency to write songs about them as both a way of channeling those emotions into something creative and also to leave me with a memory of how I was feeling at the time.  So I suggested she might consider writing some words about how she was feeling.  Having never written anything like that before, she asked if I would help, so we sat down together and used “I’m really missing you again “ as a starting point, eventually coming up with a tune we thought fitted the words.   

Somehow, songs always seem to develop a direction of their own and with such an emotional subject, the words began to do the same, Charlotte recalling how she felt about the family times we’d all spent together.  Despite her initial doubts, she soon took complete control and was soon fashioning the song into the shape she wanted.  I had a slight input with the words and music here and there but the song belongs totally to her.

You’ll no doubt be very pleased to hear that Charlotte is absolutely and totally thrilled with the final result.  Much of that is down to Gordon and Chris.  Working with them on the song has been such a pleasure, for which we owe them a huge debt of thanks.

As you may have noticed, this song contains not one, not two but three Reeves for the price of one.  We’d always wanted to record a song with Bri’s son Joby, so working with him on this made two decrepit old uncles exceedingly happy.  At such a young age his musical talent fills us with both wonder and family pride.  The track is entirely his arrangement and it was a very emotional experience for both of us to play and sing alongside him – we certainly had to up our game a bit.

This song is based on an interesting conflict that occurred between an urban young vixen and my daughter who came face to face in our back garden. Both of them seemed to object to sharing what I thought was a fairly large space and each time my daughter opened the back door the fox appeared. This went on for some time until my daughter stated that she would not go into the garden until the fox had gone and continually moaned about the situation at every opportunity. She kept telling me about the fox, I think expecting her Dad (me) to do something about it but every time I went in to the back garden the vixen would disappear. It became a major intrusion of her personal space and she was not happy.
On Christmas Day 2015 I decided that I should, as far as the fox situation was concerned, try and help my daughter’s confidence and said that I wanted to take some festive pictures at the bottom of the garden. I recorded the whole event on camera but I am not sure that it helped.  In retrospect, maybe dressing my son Daniel as a fox wasn't the wisest way of achieving this...

Hans took what was a simple, three chord uke song and turned it into this wonderful thing, as he always seems to do.  That man is a truly extraordinary talent.  He also put together the video from the one and a half minutes worth of footage we took, so it seems there really is nothing he cannot do...

"Diane, something happened last week that proved to be life changing. I went to a local music store in a town where I was holed up on an 
undercover mission. Nothing too intense, just some normal stake out kind of procedures. My cover allows me to practice my drums while I'm 
on duty. Best case ever. 

Anyway, Diane, while at said music store, trying to find a certain obscure ride cymbal, the store clerk who was helping me managed to drop a 
drum machine on my kick foot, giving me two hairline fractures. Diane, remind me to send a thank you card to the store clerk. I believe his name was 
Bradlee. He was very kind and helpful. 

While laying on the floor in pain, realizing I wouldn't be able to drum for a while, even if I did find that cymbal when I made it back to me feet, 
I decided I should let fate intervene and buy the drum maching that landed on my kick foot. Diane, D3 was right, the digitakt is a machine not to be 
taken lightly, pun intended. 

Needless to say, I've been anti drum machine my whole life until now. The guys jaws dropped when I sent them some fine soothing 
energy transferring electronic beats to play with for our new single. Diane, remind me to designa  foot cast that doesn't itch.
