The tricky third 'album'. Let's see how this progresses, together, as always.

Fundamental

I let the brakes off in terms of structure for the first song, wrote 2 tracks for love's ones, experimented with a more laid back classical feel, then I got some VSTs and went very ambient. I really enjoyed this album, and you can definitely sleep to tracks 6 - 11. Please enjoy, and comments are always welcome. If you'd like me to write you something, give me a basic idea and I'll apply my own personal magic! Keen to collaborate on anything, because music is everything. Another day, another, erm, album? Starting from scratch with Ableton, join me on the incredible journey to adequacy.

Fracture

This one snuck up on me this morning. I was working on a track, labouring quite hard with the flow, when a riff stuck in my head. I am at a moment in my life where I need absolute positivity, and this seemed to match that vibe in its relentless drive.

More of a progressive dance track, multi layered synths, bass and strings.

I hope this brings you some joy, maybe the odd toe tap, and if you go full on rave, I salute you.

Existential Equinox

I've managed to complete my second new collection with Sarei Io, a remake of RM1X classic 'I would be me'. It sounds somewhat indulgent as a song title, but it's more indicative of self belief and playing the hand you're dealt.

Given the choice, it would be a beautiful thing if we all resolved to live our best life without regret, despite the temptation to assume the grass is greener.

Not a bad reflection to signify the conclusion of this collection then..?

Sarei Io

The beginnings of a new collection, Fundamental. Aether is a piano driven progression which builds to melodic variation. The piano riff got stuck in my head, so I wanted to commit it to a song. All in all, a simple and upbeat original to start the next playlist.

Aether

My good friend and I were roped into playing a school music night to showcase our talent. I was mashing the one key bass, and Olly was fingering the high notes like a wild thing. It was about as embarrassing as it sounds, made all the worse by my drum pad and 'fill in' interludes. Because we couldn't think of a cool name in time, it was left to our music/PE teacher to come up with something. What slice of awesomeness did she choose, in line with our impeccable street credibility? Patterns. Well done.

So, I present the song it could have been, and the second track in the Fundamental collection - Filaments.

I hope I've done the old Casio justice.

Filaments

Just a little something that popped into my head. It's a song about the grief of moving on, which makes way for hope in the end.

You may feel lonely, but you're never alone.

Turn Away

Lamenting the track I've written, but never really finished. Counting Lucky Start from the 90s has a synth arpeggio I just cannot recreate, so until I dig out the RM1X and get to work, we're going to have to settle for imitations. This does stand on its own merits of course, as a stripped back version. It's a song about luck, because who doesn't need that every once in a while.

I'm also famous for saying there's no such thing as luck, so there you go. I am a living paradox.

Nova Lento

A quick composition this morning. In keeping with the Fundamental tracks so far, it basically wrote itself.

Deliberately sparse, the track signifies the passing of time and how, with patience, all will be as it should.

All in the Fullness of Time

Another reworking of an ancient track. Mr Olly Hite and myself played this as part of his GCSE music practical exam. I kept getting told off for playing too loud.

Reminiscent of a sea shanty at first, this mean and moody piece embodies the spirit of our 15 year old selves, struggling to break from the oppression of societal boundaries. Quite frankly, we just wanted to drink vodka and roll about on the floor, but apparently that's not OK.

Be yourself, they say. Not that much, they say. It's no wonder the kids are confused!

Plunderous Thunder

Today's offering is a simple 2 stage progression. The title alludes to the variation in melody, which goes from dark and intense to happy and hopeful, hopefully.

I've often used this technique, because, as much as I like to think I'm dark and moody, I am in fact a fluffy kitten at heart. I try to have most of my songs end on a happy vibe!

The Switch

I played this song as part of a music exam. I hadn't prepared at all, and a friend showed me how easy it was, using only the black notes. I sincerely apologise for not knowing the actual traditional song on which this is based, but it turned into something quite epic. Maybe in my head at the time, this was how it sounded, as opposed to the reality of a mildly competent teen with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer.

If nothing else, I'd like to say to my young self that things will turn out OK, and you'd be very proud of the man you become.

A Glorious Return

I made this song for my friend Matthew. As soon as I met him, I knew that he was something special. An excellent human who oozes class and dispenses positivity when you need it most. We all need people like Matthew. So, my mate, this is for you.

Unwavering Clarity

I wrote this for my brother - my glorious leader, and my friend. Sometimes, we're so used to people being there, we almost forget to be grateful and appreciate what we have.

Suffice to say, I love this man with all my heart and I am grateful he didn't murder me when I was a horrible teenager.

Remake, although the original never really saw the light of day (except in my twisted mind somewhere). This is a song about redemption, when you don't/can't or won't see what everyone else sees.

Close Your Eyes (again)

I recently invested in some VST instruments to give a touch of variation and realism to my compositions, so I present a fully orchestral version of Contemplation.

Early doors, so I'll get better at this, I promise.

Contemplation Symphony

Another ancient track from RM1x, which I've never managed to do justice (I'm sure I've mentioned before, on a previous interpretation). More slow building strings and floaty goodness. Just relax and enjoy, OK!?

I got a bit involved in this, there are [redacted] which obviously differs from my previous efforts. Anyway, the uplifting tale of someone who is sharing their ultimate life goals for a loved one to consider when their time has passed

Promise Me

A little something I came up with today. I have been listening to the brilliant mixes of DUBNOISE SESSIONS, and I was inspired to create something with a little more edge...but just a little. There's a tech-house beat lurking in there, along with the standard synths, strings, wobbly bass and some piano. It feels like a fight song to me! Check out DUBNOISE SESSIONS if you can, some really excellent mixes for when you fancy something a little harder.

Clamour and Fight

Another day(ish) another track. Continuing my ambient electronica style, which has now been likened to EBM (not EDM), I present another rollercoaster of angst and hope, with a side-helping of hope and hope.

We Fall and Fly

Here's one for my human followers. I wanted to make something with a bit of punch and atmosphere. Your time is precious, so I have been taking feedback on track length, amongst other things. Tell me what you like, and what you don't, and I promise to do you proud.

Paradigm

Remixed for the Legacy project, and I suspect a lot of people missed this first time, Aether is a dramatic and mystical jaunt with a relentless rhythm.

Clover received its name before I even wrote the song - yeah, that happens sometimes. This has been reworked for the Legacy project, so I hope that it gets some more love this time around. It's a song about embracing what you have, don't wait for luck to find you.

Presenting the first track from my new collection, Fracture. Unexpected Outcome is exactly that, and suffice to say, this outcome doesn't sound too favourable. I am focusing on using Ableton, and the brilliant Arturia Pigments - so hopefully this sounds a little different.

The second track on Fracture is another dark and moody piece, Fulcrum's Edge describes the delicate balance we often face in life. Again, this uses Ableton and Arturia Pigments - and I must mention Roli Lumi Keys (two of), which is now my Midi keyboard of choice.  MPE enablement allows for some crazy expression.

The Fracture project has put on its sunglasses, and gone to a 1980s sunshine destination. A mixture of 80s and modern EDM to take you on a journey and a brand new day full of possibilities, or something like that. Enjoy!

Neon Sunrise

A song with two distinct halves competing for your time. 

A dark and moody number, continuing my journey into Ableton Live, with a Lumi Keys keyboard setup. Arturia Pigments/AIR Hybrid for synths/bass, Sonivox Orchestral Companion for the strings and piano, and Roli Drum Studio for the drums.  It takes a while to get a workflow, but the sheer versatility of Ableton (and VSTs) is amazing.

Dusk and Shadow

An interesting process with this one, I started making multiple layers, sketched the layout and finished off the following day. Ableton, Roli Drum Studio, Arturia Pigments and SoniVox Orchestral for strings and piano. Again, the flexibility of Ableton is really helping my creative workflow.

Scalar

This main riff came to me in my sleep, so I got it down super quickly and I am delighted to say the track took life. Ableton Live and Arturia Pigments with a smattering of Roli Drum Studio. It's a bit dirty to my ears!

Tricks and Traps

Based on a videogame, this tries to encapsulate the sense of panic when combat intensifies.

Calamity's Saviour

A nod to my wonderful brother, as an inspirational reprise of the original track Lead the Charge! from an earlier project.

Leading the Charge

A lighter track, the progression for which came to me in a meditative state (i.e. snoozing). There is a warm and sunny feel to this, maybe reflective of the improving weather in April 2025?

Something a little more downtempo, born from a lonely piano solo.

As they are

Layered musical escalation..? It starts with two variations, before the eventual settled melody to the finish. As with a lot of my recent work, I have tried to progress the composition as quickly as possible to the point where I feel it is done - after all, time is precious, so if you can spare 3 minutes, I am very grateful.

A Matter of Pride

Closing in on the end of the Fracture project, a more traditional sound and progression. Ableton Live is thankfully becoming more second nature than the hard slog however many songs ago, and I am just scratching the surface. As ever Air, Roli and Arturia Pigments provide the VSTs.

Trial by Association

Here endeth the lesson(s). I'm pleased to present the final track in the Fracture project. Second Chances tells the story of redemption, even when it seems so far away. I feel like I am one with Ableton, or at least far more competent that when I started the project. I genuinely thought it wasn't the tool for me - so if I can do it, anyone can. Persevere!

A reworking of Contemplation, for fun. Each part is just the same sequence running on a different instrument, except for the drums, obvs.

Maintaining the theme of Musings, I start noodling with piano and strings and see where the vibe takes me.

I wrote this song for the love of my life, and here is the associated musing. This collection seems to be gathering a style.

Promise Me gets the treatment. Soundcloud is going rampant with demonetising so I won't even mention the word. Anyway, something a bit more upbeat. Enjoy.

I'd left this beat unattended for a while, so the mood took me and it turned into an unintentional boss fight.

I did the thing to the thing, which I cannot mention because of demonetisation. Anyway, this has a bit of a live feel to it, and I very much enjoyed making it. I hope you enjoy the listening!

I'm not sure where this came from, but it is a rousing jaunt through fairly classical progressions. 

Flutter

I have been creating music since my misspent youth. Every song has a story.

I started with sample based tracks via Dance eJay and Acid Music on my x486 PC, the output from which I would describe as interpretive.

My first writing from scratch started with the glorious Yamaha RM1x and subsequently the Yamaha RS7000. With limited responsibility and seemingly endless weekends, I found the creative spark.

I have diddled a bit with my Teenage Engineering OP-1, Novation Circuit and Korg Electribe 2 (see tracks for evidence), and I briefly touched the Native Instruments Maschine MK2 but I didn't have the PC power to run with that.

Once Akai announced the MPC Live, I was positively salivating and purchased on release.

It has always been about an all in one box solution for me, and now I am only limited by my own creativity and precious free time (thanks, kids).

I write things that I like to listen to, but commercial music this is not. I could see my music in a game, artsy video or fever dream.

At least, when it's all done, I can say that I made some nice noise, even if nobody else thinks so.
