Sorang, the debut album of Yalta native Wulffius (@wulffius), represents his work over the last eight years. The playful creature on the cover, Stone Eater, is based on childhood sketches of the producer's father. The album's name alludes to the first collection of his father's poems, which took its name from a short story by Konstantin Paustovsky, a master of nature writing in Russian prose. Sorang is the name of the south wind that "blows once in centuries," and you can hear its unique warmth in these tracks. There is a sense of wholeness here, a palpable style and atmosphere that permeates the individual pieces.

Wulffius creates what he refers to as "B-sides": something too strange to be danceable, with "complex ease" and rhythmical variety. The music has a charming serenity and beauty thanks to Wulffius' intuitive approach, which is childlike and whimsical in the best possible sense. By the way, Paustovsky wrote Sorang in an hour and a half at a speed writing competition. You can hear a similar spontaneity here, but make no mistake, this is the work of a master that has been crafted over a period of years. It all comes from experience.

Wulffius создает музыку, которую сам называет «би-сайдами»: слишком странными в своей «сложной простоте» и ритмическом разнообразии, чтобы быть обычными танцевальными треками. GOST ZVUK x NTS monthly show #47 w/ Serwed

For Oleg Azelitskiy, known as DJ Slon, the nineties and the first half of the aughts were an era of “firsts”. First squat parties on the banks of the Obvodny Canal and more legitimate ones at Tunnel, first proper techno club in Russia. First DJ sets, first vinyl records in his collection, first radio shows at Port FM. He is a true veteran of the Russian techno movement, who carried his love for the genre through three decades and inspired more than one generation of musicians. Album №1 is the first edition of his music on vinyl. It comprises the music that Azelitskiy made during 1995 – 2005, except for the track My 40th Vesna, produced in 2010.

Azelitskiy’s love for techno was born out of contradictions. Thanks to the Soviet synth band Zodiac and the French pioneer Jean-Michel Jarre, he had loved electronic music since his childhood. When he grew up, he got into the dark, introspective pieces by Einstürzende Neubauten and Bauhaus. Not only does the wide-ranging palette on Album №1 reflect its creator’s taste, it echoes the changing times of the Russian nineties. It was the time when confrontations with criminals were inseparable from the parties and get-togethers bustling with local artists.

His affection for various genres led to many monikers and projects, all represented here on Album №1. He recorded most of his music as DJ Slon. Then there was a project Zhutkiy Lazer (Scary Laser), where Azelitskiy made music that was more experimental but still techno-oriented, with the occasional help of his friend Aleksey Gaponenko (Lazer became a proper solo project of DJ Slon in 1999). There are also tracks under the aliases Mass Fatality, which combined techno and synth-pop, and Razrushiteli Mozgovych Uliev (Brain Hive’ Destroyers), with its more direct tight techno tracks.

The music of DJ Slon sounds fresher and more alive on Album №1 than ever before. Noticeably, this record, first and foremost, is dance music. As a voice on one of the album tracks boldly states, we came to dance.

Gost Zvuk prepare for a busy 2023 with an enthralling double LP's worth of futurist sound design from Flaty. In the game for more than a decade now, the producer, mastering engineer and all-round visionary artist has delivered an impressive range of music across both his own ANWO imprint as well as for West Mineral ltd., 12th Isle, Firecracker and more.

Always content to subvert expectations and blur stylistic lines, on Intuitive Word there is a clear fascination with a spectral, whittled-down-to-its-core type of avant-pop/RNB hybrid. Digital strings, dubbed beyond recognition semantic snatches, re-imagined new age style synthesis and even flourishes of MMORPG computer game soundtracks all combine into something that feels uniquely Flaty. In a sense, Intuitive Word marries ambient sound collage and hyperreal, narrative-style vocal processing. However, glimmers of shoegaze and old 'ethereal' bands (think Harold Budd & Cocteau Twins) crop up on tracks like 'Tree' and 'Nepal Lit', a testament to Flaty's skill for world-building and atmospherics.

Across the 19 cuts there is a recurring theme of choral style, computer generated elegies. A kind of 'cristal trance', in their words. 'Mint' combines these with overtly RNB style vocal samples, whereas darker, more broken beat soundscapes can be heard on the Madteo collab 'Observer'. With plenty of sombre and cinematic style ventures such as 'NEWS' breaking up the album and eschewing this focus on vocals, we find one of the most consistent producers in the current Russian scene delivering what may well be his most accomplished collection yet.

GOST020: Flaty "Intuitive Word"

First rising to global acclaim in the latter half of the dubstep era with 'Ruins Tape', veteran St. Petersburg producer Nocow has fluidly moved across styles in the years since. Moving in a new direction from 2017s 'Ledyanoy Album', which saw the producer channel 90s ambient techno/IDM for GOST ZVUK, these 17 new tracks, and collaborations for the label instead hone in on a vocal-heavy type of ghostly R&B. As an album, Odinocow carries hints of trance, house and polished electronica ('Blizhe') as well as raw broken beat hybrids ('Dengi Ne Sgorayut'), though the primary unifying factor is the voice.

The heavy use of autotune, downtempo arrangements and wistful, machine-distorted human emotion are referenced in the album's title, which translates roughly to lonely Nocow. Whilst past albums have oscillated between steady dance structures and more wildly experimental arrangements, there is a recurring theme of simplicity at play here. Nocow aims to craft memorable songs by harmonising over contrasting ambient soundscapes, from glacial to warm, through to trap/rnb and 4x4 dance-pop.

With such an emphasis on exploring his voice and his songwriting craft, Nocow injects a new level of soul and integrity to his already well-established productions. Odinocow is a departure from his past work in some ways, though is also an example of a musician striving to reflect their truest vision of the self. "By finding yourself, you become able to love yourself, and, as a result, the world. So the album is really about love."

GOST021: Nocow "Odinocow"

Part of the St. Petersburg underground for more than a decade now, @hoavi-music(Kirill Vasin) has released on labels around the world since debuting with Cyclones in 2013. With Phases, he joins the Gost Zvuk roster and builds on his previous ventures into ambient and dub inspired house with a six track mini-album that channels elements of his Phobia Airlines LP. The general atmosphere is built through industrial sound design, moving from quick-fire broken beat and woozy downtempo into rhythmic noise and abstract reductivism. The whole thing collides to form a sort of futurist, machinic statement that relies more on rhythm and percussive synth work than the balancing of melody, seeing the artist hone in further on physical modelling synthesis and computer-generated textures. This mission statement only adds to the inescapable sci-fi aura at work, with Hoavi providing a fresh take on the kind of zones explored by luminaries such as Best Available Technology, Vainqueur / Hallucinator and odd moments of The Flashbulb.

Gost Zvuk invites Vlad Dobrovolski (@vladislav-dobrovolski), a multidisciplinary artist also known as Fitz Ellarald. Vlad also takes part in trio kurvenschreiber and S A D duo. 

A couple of words about the mox from Vlad himself: 

"I invite you to listen to the new, rare, and little-known works from my projects and the projects of my friends. Here you will hear a familiar attraction to the sounds of water, bird songs, and the buzzing of insects, and a vibrant love for pastoral keyboard motifs. I delved even deeper into the tension between natural and artificial - this mixtape is still a projection of observations of nature, in my opinion, and here they are expressed in a hyper-synthetic language, carefully thought out by me.

Although this work is less illusive than the earlier ones, much of it carries the hope that my colleagues and I have for organic or "ecological music" – it could also be called an object or soundscape that can be listened to easily and airily. This is not music that excites or transports the listener to another world, it encourages you to float like smoke and become part of the environment that surrounds you, the listener.

In other words, it is music that creates a strong connection with people in everyday life... Moreover, this mix is not an attempt at self-expression or a complete work of art, rather, it brings together music that, by merging and moving, changes the character and meaning of space, things, and people."

GOST ZVUK x Dublab: guest show with Vlad Dobrovolski

The don of Siberian techno Roma Zuckerman (@roma-zuckerman) made his debut double LP ‘Phenomenon of Provincial Mentality’ on Gost Zvuk with a much-anticipated showcase of his remarkably diverse language of sound, from quickfire DJ tools to off-kilter extrapolations with a full stylistic diversity in between.

Working through the archive, the label assembled a collection of hypnotic loops in the vein of early Robert Hood and click-and-cut experiments that recall the punk attitude of Berlin's Elektro Music Department, all the while with nods towards European minimal. The album opens with two subdued, speak-and-spell processed vocal jams before 'Text Regulator' brings things into overdrive with furious drum programming and wide-eyed glitch FX. Over to Side B things take a turn into something more melodic and relaxing, an almost BBC radiophonic workshop zone with synthetic underwater sounds bringing to mind Amadeo Tomassi's library soundtracks of the late 70s. Think of early sonic portrayals of deep space exploration or the ocean's vastness mixed with repetitive 909 stabs.

‘I Play Everyday’ strikes as one of the album's highlights, a prime example of Zuckerman’s fascination with creating loop-based grooves to get lost in. There’s a hint of Richard H. Kirk’s 90s IDM classic ‘Freezone’ in the timbre of the opening moments, but where Kirk goes into sample-heavy cross-cultural futurism, ‘I Play Everyday’ seems acutely concerned with subtle reductions. ‘Extra Work’ harnesses a kind of pounding warehouse gabber energy with what sounds like a collage of shortwave radio voices, whereas album closer ‘Companeros’ brings in snippets of traditional Spanish-style acoustic guitar, albeit layered in a concrete manner with bursts of electrical distortion. It makes for one of the LP’s most surprising moments, but all round ‘Phenomenon of Provincial Mentality’ shows an artist working with a vast variety of styles. A truly great body of work to kick off the year.

Piper Spray & Lena Tsibizova is a duet of a composer and multimedia artist from Moscow. They describe their sound as 'romantic noise,' combining industrial textures with nostalgia. Piper was one of the founders of the cassette label Singapore Sling Tapes, which has collaborated with Orange Milk, Hausu Mountain, and Constellation Tatsu. Lena Tsibizova is better known as a photographer and artist. As a musician, she has released two albums on the Prague-based label Baba Vanga and the Florida-based label Illuminated Paths. Lena and Piper are also members of the Air Krew.

GOST ZVUK x Dublab: guest show with Piper Spray & Lena Tsibizova

Gost Zvuk presents the first vinyl release from the hidden gem of the Moscow electronic scene – Dmitry Drozdov. Under the shadowy alias of @dx2ov, on Interzona he plays with an array of fairground-like melodies, lo-fi house motifs, buoyant space-age optimism, and old-school UK breaks. Along with the strong emphasis on melody, at the forefront of his style is a keen ear for off-kilter, scattered percussion, with 'Voices' shining as a curious example of polyrhythmic, synthetic metallophone meshing with gritty Roland rhythm box styles. The album glides between these sharper moments and experiments with gloopy, submerged aesthetics and Madlib-like phone call snippets ('OK') as well as minimalist, Detroit-inspired funk on the microhouse-esque 'Loop' - another highlight with its perfectly placed and skewed vocal lead.

'Eliseus' runs close to 130bpm with a tight drum pattern reminiscent of the excellent 'Gesicht Aus Diamant' by 100Records, a minimal gem from 2005. Dima's track channels similar ecstatic synth propulsion, with what sounds like a warped choral disintegration washing in and out of the stereo field. More trippy vocal distortions all around! The influences run wide and deep across Interzona, from beat tape hip-hop to US house/techno and library music. The ambient closing cuts also tread a similar path at points to label mate Flaty's AEM Rhythm Cascade & Dices collaboration.

Олег Буянов возвращается на ГОСТ со своим дебютным двойным альбомом «Перепад Высот». Эта работа посвящена исследованию и переосмыслению советского музыкального наследия позднего периода – от саундтреков для научных фильмов и более абстрактных артхаус работ, до музыки лежащей в основе авангардной советской мультипликации 80-х – начала 90-х. Перепад высот в данном случае является метафорой, отражающей эфемерность и непостоянство чувств и эмоций, широкую амплитуду испытываемых нами настроений – от праздного и веселого к более вдумчивому, серьёзному, что в свою очередь прослеживается в единой музыкальной линии альбома.

Gost Zvuk marks tenth release with a new full-length by Vtgnike, arguably the most influential producer on the Russian electronic scene who is also partly responsible for shaping the label's aesthetics and sonic identity. During the years of his practice Vtgnike meticulously sculpting a sound unique to himself finding a gap yet unexplored — somewhere between current hardcore continuum trends and the sounds of classic IDM era. But despite falling somewhere on the UK music territories, "Collection" creates a space of its own — the one inspired by the al the splendors and miseries of Post-Sovietness one cannot get rid of.

Для отечественной электроники Михаил Чекалин является не только важнейшим персонажем, повлиявшим на становление и развитие сцены, но и своего рода фигурой символической. На Западе его музыкой восхищались многие — от журналистов и критиков всех сортов до Фрэнка Заппы и Карлхайнца Штокхаузена. В родной же Москве имя Чекалина было долгое время изъято из официальной культурной повестки — его обвиняли в пропаганде чужой «прозападной» эстетики, вплоть до конца 1980-х не давали издавать свои произведения и блокировали выезд за границу. Что впрочем не помешало ему записать десятки новаторских, опередивших свое время электронных композиций и внести большой вклад в развитие неофициального советского искусства в целом — например, создавая звуковое оформление для знаменитых выставок «Двадцати московских художников» на Малой Грузинской или устраивая первые аудио-визуальные перформансы на специально сконструированном «световом органе». 

Впрочем, как и все большие художники, сам Михаил Чекалин предпочитает фокусироваться не на личных достижениях, а на творчестве. «У меня нет биографии — есть только дискография», — эта цитата автора может стать здесь своеобразной точкой входа в представленную компиляцию. Это архивный сборник работ, записанных в период с 1979 по 1987 года — полижанровые эксперименты Чекалина в радиусе от «пространственной музыки» (по сути, предтечи эмбиента) до более современных синтезаторных и пост-симфонических композиций.

For Russian electronic music, Mikhail Chekalin is not only a major character, who has affected the scene's establishment and development, but also a kind of symbolic figure. His music has been praised by many in the West - from journalists and critics of all kinds to Frank Zappa and Karlheinz Stockhausen, while in Moscow Chekalin's name was excluded from the official cultural agenda for a long time: he was accused of propaganda of foreign 'pro-Western' aesthetics and up until the end of the 80's wasn't allowed to release his works or travel abroad. This, however, didn't interfere with him recording dozens of innovative electronic compositions and contributing greatly to the development of unofficial Soviet art in general - for example, providing sound design for the famous exhibitions of 'Twenty Moscow Artists' on Malaya Gruzinskaya or arranging the first audiovisual performances on a specially constructed 'light organ'.

However, just like all great artists, Mikhail himself prefers to focus not on personal achievements, but on creativity. 'I don't have a biography - only a discography' - this quote of the author may become an entry point of sorts into the compilation presented. This archival collection of works recorded within the period from 1978 to 1987 are Chekalin's multigenre experiments ranging from spatial music (in essence, ambient's precursor) to more contemporary synthesizer and post-symphonic compositions.

Five years ago, the expression ‘Russian electronic scene’ had borne a tone of futurology and expectancies rather than a real state of affairs. It was possible to put together musicians of local and genre importance easily in general, but not of significance in national scale. With rise and further development of ГОСТ Звук, Russian electronic music achieved power not only as cultural phenomenon within country’s borders, but also proved fully to be a thing of international meaning. Starting operations in 2014, the label quickly defined its domains of authority and engagement and created full-bloody community of musicians, where everyone has a special view on his own work and unique sound. The projects presented on this compilation can be rightfully called the contemporary vanguard of Russian and global electronic music.

Each of resonant artists holds his own disparate creative field and impact. However, in this diversity the unity of creation of beauty and ingenuity is born, that distinguishes Russian independent electronica. All compiled tracks perfectly characterize the artists involved, sometimes from extremely striking sides; chaotic improvisations and ethereal grooves, unearthly landscapes and undistracted concisions. Both electric boffinry and club anthems merge into united vision, placed in graceful frame of Rashad Becker’s mastering.

Maybe this compilation won’t close the question ‘What is the Russian Sound?’, which has been raising for more than a twenty years. Nevertheless, it is able to give an extensive view on the evolution of Russian electronica in the 2010s.

ГОСТ ЗВУК 5 ЛЕТ

Aleksei Nikitin, whose first release kindled the GOST ZVUK history (and whose brilliantly sparkish "Ledyanoy Album" was issued on the label a couple of years ago), goes back to Ground Zero after his trilogy on Figure and REKIDS' "Atoner" LP. All four tracks of the ninth GOST INSTRUMENT's vinyl present a rather way-out approach, surprisingly uncommon for Aleksei's form style. But this seemed minimalism tends to be valid only at first glance. Starting from plain rhythm, "Elektromechanika's" further groove is drifting on lots of tousled synths. "Far Voices", an exercise in interweaving of echoes and voice samples, ends right at the moment when you expect track's next iteration. The B-side is not without surprises too: the acid beat of "Oasis" rises almost suddenly after drone-alike "Monothone". Summarizing all the above, getting into this record is not only the extremely clear case, but you should also try to play it from random track, or even in "B2-A1" order.
