Soft Break Operator Radio for AMPFEMININE - 04.03.2020

This EP is a sort of homage to one of my favourite childhood memories - playing Wipeout with my dad on our PS1. I didn't realise it at the time, but the game was my first taste of electronic/rave music I really liked. The amount of detail and effort The Designers Republic and Psygnosis put into the game and backstory is just immense and timeless and ended up influencing my taste immensely.

'Porto Kora' - named after one of the best tracks on Wip3out - is a Hard Drum track with a euphoric intro and breakdown, with wallshaking half-time rhythms inbetween. It blends between modern Reggaeton and UK Bass drums with a dark stabby bass and is littered with references to the Wipeout soundtrack and sound design.

'Indigo' is a deep, neo-noir-esque Leftfield Techno peak-timer filled with enough space to double the size of the room it's played in. Tablas and a 4x4 bring in an energetic breakdown and rise before plonking you straight back on the dancefloor.

'Cairodrome' samples a reminiscent and prominant vocal for me from Cold Storage's soundtrack from the first edition of the game. A droning bassline sits undeneath a rough 'n' tough breaks and crispy arp's that reminds me of my time shooting until the early hours at manchester's warehouse project.

Jamz Supernova's label Future Bounce this year turns it's hand to the club, with a year long series of club releases which will culminate in a compilation! Picking artists who’s productions have been a staple in Jamz' DJ sets, each month will see an original, exclusive two track drop. Ranging from well known underground producers to those yet to have their moment, focusing on the UK & beyond!

The sixth release comes from Italian producer DJ Tess, now living in London. Whilst still a relatively new producer all of DJ Tess’s releases have been off a high quality and have solidified her within the UK Club scene. It was through seeing her DJ and releases with More Time Records that drew Jamz attention to Tess. With every release Tess shows us her versatility as a producer, be it MC driven, dark & percussive or a straight up peak time banger. These two releases on Future Bounce see Tess flirt with an industrial Techno sound. The second breakdown on Cattiva II is spine tingling & Nightmare takes you on a journey with subtle builds. Road tested at socially distant dances, in Jamz Supernova’s RA mix and early support from Emerald on BBC Radio 1xtra. With or without the club these two releases are worth having.


About DJ TESS:
Italy-born London-based DJ and producer Giulia Campanella pulls the sonority of riddim into the dark side of percussive electronica in a refreshing and effortless way. Codifying the variety of influences trapped within DJ Tess is like a journey through a maze: challenging, thrilling and yet, rewarding in the end. She started her musical exploits by first banging on the drums, she then shifted the weight and hunger of new vibrations to the decks of the local clubs of the east coast of the Bel Paese. Her musical range is wide and eclectic with influences including Jungle, Dancehall, Southern Italian music perfectly blended with Grime, Techno and Bass music, creating her own unique and versatile style.
