London duo @sicariasound has reinvigorated dubstep by pulling from every side of the 140bpm spectrum. The pair of Ndeko and Imbratura are longtime friends who have an unspoken understanding when it comes to DJing together, as was frequently demonstrated at their residency for Mala's Deep Medi. They also run their own Cutcross label which can serve up sounds that reference anything from breakbeat to grime, rave to bass. Despite this success - and the news this week that they are to put out Binate, their first official EP - they have also announced that they will disband the project at the end of 2021.

Thankfully, we will always have the mix to come back to, because it is a perfect embodiment of their sound. Well informed but never too serious, it takes in ice-cold wobblers as well as industrial strength steppers and skeletal, minimal dubstep sounds that hark back to the golden era. The whole thing is stitched together in a way that shows up the contrasts of light and dark, spaciousness and intensity and ensures you remain fully locked in.

Straight out of Japan’s night scene, Takeaki Maruyama aka Goth-Trad is taking over this episode of Bass Music hosted by The Untouchables.

Goth-Trad has been composing dubstep since 2005 and has started a dubstep party series, Back to Hill, launched in Tokyo around the same time which led to his first international releases including a series of 12" EPs and later an album out on seminal UK dubstep label DEEP MEDi MUSIK.

He became a household name internationally and regularly played DJ sets and live acts around the world. In 2014, he launched his own label, Back To Chill and around 2016 he started to turn towards more experimental sounds again, both on his solo releases and with his new band Eartaker before he finally returned to releasing dubstep in 2021.

The second half of our two-part 200th podcast comes courtesy of another musical heavyweight, dubstep kingpin Mala. Whether operating solo or as one half of legendary outfit Digital Mystikz, the man helped put dubstep on the musical map in the mid-’00s, not only as a producer and DJ, but also as the co-founder of the genre-defining DMZ label and club night with Coki and Loefah. Along the way, he also found the time to start up his own Deep Medi imprint. His work has undeniably influenced an entire generation of bass-loving artists, including a large swath of those folks who regularly appear in XLR8R. These days, when he’s not travelling the globe and reminding people of the power of sub-bass, he’s still turning out new music—most recently last year’s Return II Space album—and now he’s kicking off a new mix series, Sound*System*Musik, the first chapter of which is this podcast for XLR8R. Over the course of its 45 minutes, Mala drops one low-slung, speaker-rattling tune after the next, many of them DMZ dubplates, and almost all of which seriously emphasize the dub end of the dubstep equation. He’s a true master craftsman, someone who manipulates and massages low-end sonics with the precision of a surgeon, making his contribution to the XLR8R podcast series to true pleasure to behold.
