UKG edit of one of my favorite 90’s R&B revisits on top of the original “Phone Tap” beat. One of the greatest slept on hip hop beats produced by Dr Dre. This beat was a freestyle staple and the Faith Evans/Carl Thomas revisit is one of my all time guilty pleasure/breakup tracks.

I’ve been sitting on it for a while, so I was thrilled when @justinjaymusic asked me to include it on this @fantasticvoyagemusic compilation.

We are so fired up to share Qwerk’s next Undertones release; “Furious Styles” by Giancarlo Gatto. This jam-packed drum & bass EP sets the tone with its dark, growling basslines, paired perfectly with crisp, high energy drums and percussion. To finish off the project, Giancarlo Gatto teamed up with Qwerk co-founder, Rodney Dinkles, to create a wonky techno track filled with ‘qwerky’ ear candy that will leave you speechless on the dancefloor.

When did you start making music? 
I started my freshman year in college. as a kid I always loved hip hop and the culture surrounding it.  2nd and 3rd grade I was listening to Public Enemy and knew every lyric. It stayed like that through middle school and high school. I finally met some guys my freshman year in college that made beats, DJ’d and MC’d. We kind of all became friends and started working on stuff together here and there. I was always writing lyrics and recording over instrumental tracks.  I bought my first set of turntables in 97’ as well as my first sampler (boss SP 202) a year or so later .   . . . I was mostly just making loops on the sampler to scratch and rhyme over at that point, but that was the start.  Then drum and bass and jungle started to break through a bit into the hip hop sound and that got me going to raves and listening to lots of house and techno, going to raves, and starting to mess around with producing acid house.  But it was all just loops and short tracks back then.  I was mainly a DJ that utilized some light production in my sets, and to make hip hop beats for homies to rhyme over.  I honestly never made any completed tracks until 3-4 years ago when I got into Ableton through Justin Jay.  

What makes YOU qwerky?
I’m such a nerd in general.  Most DJs and producers are tbh.  We all try to look cool, but get us talking and we will nerd out on music (of course), anime, movies, sci fi . . . whatever.  That’s honestly why I love the community.  We mostly all have a similar language and open heart.  

If you were a cartoon character, who would you be?
Winnie the Pooh for sure.  Left to my own interests I’d be pretty content to roll around vibing on life with my belly hanging out looking for something sweet to eat.    

What’s your favorite sound?
It’s such a corny DJ thing to say, but that crackle sound before the music starts when you throw on a record is pretty amazing.

You’re making dinner at your house… what’s on the menu? 
Definitely my grandmom’s classic spaghetti, meatballs and gravy (tomato sauce). RIP Mom Mom Marie!

Who are 3 people you’d invite? (from any time period) 
Hunter S Thompson, Jack Kerouac, and Jesus . . . I feel like there would be plenty to discuss with that crew.

As a promoter, Teddy uses his No Drums or Bass collective  to bring unique artists to the Bend market, as well as showcase up and coming local talent.

We are lucky to have him here, and watching him play always inspires me to dig deeper in my bag and work harder at the craft.
