Commissioned by the Gough Duo as a companion piece to Vaughan Williams' "The Lark Ascending", David Bednall's new work "The Phoenix" is written for the violin and organ to be spatially separated. This live recording comes from the church of La Madeleine in Paris where the Gough Duo gave the first performance on 28th July 2013. Rupert is on the Grand Orgue and Rachel nearly 100 metres away at the East end.

The Gough Duo is an internationally renowned violin and organ duo based in the UK.

The Gough Duo is the only regular violin and organ duo to tour internationally. They have appeared in various European festivals and toured the USA many times from New York to Dallas and Florida to Alaska. In 2009 they performed to a sell-out audience of 1800 at the new Svetlanov Hall for the Moscow International Organ Festival. In the UK the Duo enjoys the challenge of performing in a variety of venues, from soirées using house or box organs to Westminster Abbey and Symphony Hall, Birmingham.

The Duo has a number of commercial recordings available, including the works for violin, soprano and organ by Karg-Elert (Lammas Records) and the violin and organ suites of Joseph Rheinberger. They are committed to promoting new music and have had many pieces composed for them, including a Sonata by American composer Carson Cooman which has been recorded for Naxos Records.
