U Got Me - Lee Foss

On 'Made of Wood', his ninth full-length album, Oliver Koletzki embodies the seasoned craftsman, carving out his deeply personal sonic sculptures with a confident, learned hand, while experimenting with a broad range of thrilling ideas and fresh textures. Initially written in Tulum in late 2019, Koletzki completed the album in Berlin aided by numerous live musicians and vocalists, bringing his sketches to life with a focus on wooden instruments like djembes, marimbas, santoors or duduks, thus sculpting a natural sound that's warm in timbre, rich in groove and literally made of wood. 'Copal', the first of two advance EPs, captures the essence of Oliver's approach, teasing the release with its floor-focussed shaker of a title-track and the handpan-driven epic that is 'Cryptozoology'.

Recorded last September as part of Manchester’s Repercussion Festival, which was held at Depot Mayfield in conjunction with The Warehouse Project, this was a special appearance in a unique setting – upstairs at the Star & Garter pub, which borders the site, playing to a capacity audience of just 80 people! The room was decked out for the event with a high-end audio install courtesy of Manchester’s Mastersounds - the one-off combination of small room and big system a rare treat for all those able to squeeze themselves in and certainly one of the highlights of 2021 for me. A fabled Manchester Indie venue in more recent times, The Star & Garter’s history goes back over 200 years, when it was originally constructed in 1803 approximately 100 yards away, before being moved, brick by brick, to its current position in 1849 to allow work on what would later become Piccadilly Railway Station.

Bringing us back to the 80s, this nostalgic yet uplifting edit by Juvë features global pop hit Shout.

English New Wave band Tears For Fears scaled all sorts of charts with this track, which has been remixed often.

Juvë adds a more acid bassline and a driving beat, exploring darker realms with this great remix, which can bring a unique dimension to any set.

Growing up in London meant Rockin Moroccin was always surrounded by music. He soon started working at the drum & bass record store Lucky Spin while playing house parties and showcasing his early love of 80's electro. 

Over the last 15 years in the game, he's played all over Europe and made a big mark on Ibiza playing at HEART as well as Amnesia's Vagabundos night. His music is aimed at the dance floor and draws on new disco, melodic, tribal and percussive styles.

This new single is defined by its superb vocal, a classic house music top line that takes on an all-new soul perspective here. It is a silky smooth affair with an almost choral edge. The drums are warm and the percussion organic and bubbly, with sombre piano chords draped over the groove to help make this one a truly tender tune.

Rockin Moroccin will have dance floors with their hands in the air and tears in their eyes when he drops this one.

badabing diskos welcome Oslo-based but Bogota-born Casablanca 303 for a pair of irresistible
house gems.
Casablanca 303 operates in his own deep house world where influences from jazz, world, kosmiche and disco all colour his grooves. They have so far come on the likes of Mhost Likely and Cocuy Records as he continues to make his name in Norway with regular sets at key local clubs. This new outing on the influential Scandi label badabing diskos is sure to take him to new heights once more.

He opens up with the adventurous 'Lucid Dreams', a full flavour house cut lit up with expressive synth
lines that bring rays of cosmic energy. A gurgling bassline down low never quits and makes this one a
characterful track full of warmth and drama. The fantastic 'Estereograma' is an equally epic cosmic trip
layered up with colourful synths and driving drums. Acid lines and big chords bring extra detail as the
journeying groove never lets up and gets ever more electric.

Milano-based producer Eluard graces Slow Motion Records once again with his debut album ‘Dirty Hall’. A release filled with his distinctively nostalgic tone, blending West Coast synth funk and Italo Disco with appropriate, seamless grit.

‘Dirty Hall’ opens with ‘Die Erste Musik’,  a chiming track with a wide, captivating vocal sampler riff that delicately dances off fizzing percussion. Creamy, glistening chords sit beautifully within this arrangement effortlessly complementing the bassline. This approach is taken a step further in the following ‘Carlo E Daria’, with an instantly attention-grabbing swirling synth motif.

‘Dirty Hall’ shows the breadth of Eluard's innate talent for harnessing the best out of the analogue machine, creating a rich sonic palette that never fails to warm the ears. The thundering lows of ‘Comic Bad’ are met with a mind-bending augmented synth line and a beautifully enigmatic vocal riff.

Eluard’s sound design throughout this LP masterfully pushes the retro into the present realm, retaining the characterful intrigue of the instruments recorded. Intelligently placed harmonies in ‘Dancers Are Thin And Pretty’ and ‘Funny Jasmine’ help to raise the instrumental sequences, allowing the listener to be transported to a more reflective, existential space.

The slick flare of elegant floor filler ‘Phonemes’ solidifies Eluard as a visionary within the Italian Dance Wave Movement, layering distinguished instrumentals with perfectly placed melodics.

‘Dirty Hall’ eloquently concludes with the sophisticated sleaze of ‘In The Next Room’. A masterful nod to the golden era of the vocoder with a stomping, percussive groove and a cleansing chordal sequence. ‘Dirty Hall’ is an LP charged with a mind-bending evocation instilling Eluard as a forward-thinking force within the sonic sphere.

From Barcelona, Fernanda Arrau is back, presenting her latest EP 'Sexy Dance.' The talented Chilean DJ and producer made her debut on the label with "Calypso" in 'Muy Divas Vol 1', and now she immerses us in a world of shimmering sounds and hypnotic rhythms.

The EP, consisting of three cuts: two of them original versions and a masterful edit by Bawrut.

The EP kicks off with "Sexy Dance," a track that's fresh, fun, and simultaneously seductive. With a playful bassline, echoing vocals, an enjoyable cowbell, and a solid drumbeat, this 6-and-a-half-minute song leads listeners into a state of hypnotic dancing.

Moving on, we encounter "Simple," a track that dazzles with its depth and sparkle. The combination of the drums and the enveloping bass keeps your feet grounded, while the pure pads guide listeners on a delicate and enchanting journey.

The perfect conclusion to the EP comes from the hands of the renowned producer Bawrut, who delivers an enigmatic edit of "Jenny Lind." This hypnotic cut captivates you from the very beginning with its magnetic bassline and precise drumbeat that builds an irresistible atmosphere.
The initial sounds repeat like a mantra throughout the track, while other elements join in a cyclical voyage.

"Walking around and seeing turtles, flamingos, and just enjoying the tropical climate of Mexico...there's something special about that because I'm from Norway and we just had snow two weeks ago.

This is a mix of my own material, most of the songs are rearranged or edited a little bit to work better in a live set context. I usually select some old songs, some new ones, and some unreleased material, then try different things in the live mix. I don't usually share my live sets because they don't feel as exciting to me after the fact, though they do feel really great when playing live."

@joeynegro continues to cement his place in the annals of disco‘s rich history with the release of a new version of his hit record ‘Must Be The Music’: a track that has been given a complete overhaul from its original incarnation.

Originally released in 1999 and featuring Taka Boom (sister of Chaka Khan) on vocals, ‘Must Be The Music’ was a hit in every sense of the word. Released by the Subliminal label, it was a one of the rare records to make the transition from club mainstay to genuine pop hit, eventually breaking into the top 10 of the UK singles chart.

Now completely reworked by Joey Negro himself, the record has been totally transformed and given a new lease of life as a shimmering disco anthem in the vein of disco demigods Chic and Change. 

“The only thing that remains from the original record is the chorus backing vocals. All the drums, music and verse vocals from Dianne Charlamagne are new. The original sounds a little dated to me now: it’s too fast and has that filtered sound that worked in the 90s and still seems to find favour in some quarters, but for me is tired.

“Because it was a hit I often get asked to play it when I DJ, so I thought it would be cool to do a radically different remake my own song, produce a new version I could play in my sets alongside original disco and the new music I’m making now.” Joey Negro

This new version of ‘Must Be The Music’ is taken from the forthcoming Joey Negro album Produced With Love. Described by DJ Mag as “his latest masterpiece…this is feel-good, love-inspired classic disco for the 21st Century” and as “sunshine in aural form” by Mixmag, this is only the second ever Joey Negro album to be released – and the first for more than 20 years. The overwhelming majority of music included was newly recorded: a real rarity when it comes to modern disco and indicative of the level of care and attention that has been poured into the project.

This was great fun - loved sticking to the theme, and by 20 minutes in it felt more like we were in the Bronx in 1984 by than a tent in a field in Somerset! Excuse some of the dodgy mixing moments, this was all live! Enjoy, and wear full adidas tracksuit to appreciate entirely  :) "

We have many of our old friends; Nico Stojan, Sabo, Canson, Armen Miran & Hraach, Eduardo Castillo, Birds of Mind, Kincaid, and Amentia, together alongside new artists on the label for the 1st time. We welcome Ali Kuru from Turkey, Hot Oasis from Egypt, Raidho from Poland, Gabriel Belmudes from Brazil, Elfenberg from Sweden, Juan from Germany, Fatoumata from France, and many more…

With this project we aim to break down all the borders and walls of separation. Through music we are uniting together

Sol Selectas run by Sabo welcomes back Unders who has been a prominent feature in the label's back catalogue. Unders has also contributed to other imprints including Kindisch, Under Your Skin, Sincopat and Katermukke along with his own Happy Camper Records.

Unders, is a producer from Holland, who had a break through song called “Syria” on Sol Selectas three years ago, and is a huge fan of the band Morphine, so he created this dance floor remix of their track “The Other Side” for his DJ sets.

With the intention of keeping the original Morphine legacy alive along with the spirit of deceased lead singer Mark Sandman, the original members of the band have agreed to officially release this incredible remix, as every time Unders played it the reaction was incredible.

Already rated by Mixmag as one of the hottest tracks of the Summer in 2017, even though it had never even been released, this special remix of an American classic will surely take its listeners on a journey to “The Other Side”, where “life is better”.

Morphine was an Alternative Rock group from Boston which formed in 1989. Morphine’s unique sound combined blues and jazz elements with more traditional rock arrangements, and the lead singer Mark Sandman had a distinctively deep and laid-back tone. After five successful albums in the early '90s they disbanded after Mark Sandman tragically died on stage of a heart attack. The founding members reformed into the band Vapors of Morphine, maintaining much of the original style and sound.

With a slow, smouldering sound consisting of saxophones, soft percussion, two finger bass and beatnik-style poetry lyrics, the bands bluesy sound has been captured fully in Unders stunning rework.

The lyrics of the track talk of “crossing over to the other side” and this version pays homage to the original and celebrates the living achievements of Mark Sandman before he sadly passed away.

Created by Helia Jamali, the Artwork was influenced by the song lyrics, and is intended to be a visually stimulating journey to an unknown but familiar place “with the preacher's wife”.

Rising Star Freudenthal remixes Tiempo de Malad's "Soufi" for Nein Records

One of the key figures of the Berlin techno disco/chug scene and founder of the Kater Blau based Feinstoff parties, @freudenthal a.k.a 1/2 of @Pardonmoiband is a busy man – not only organizing the most colourful & sophisticated parties at respected venues like Salon Zur Wilden Renate, or Ritter Butzke, but also with a number of high quality releases (EP’s & Remixes) on labels such as Höga Nord Rekords, NEIN Records and Roam Recordings as well as his glorious live/DJ sets at Katerblau & Bachstelzen.

In September 2018 Gouranga threw a fundraiser for #DanceLikeMandela and oceanic charity Project Ø in Public Arts in New York City. The evening was a celebration of African Music and a well heeled guestlist of fashion week revellers danced to purely tribal beats from 10pm -4am. We asked one of favourite producers @jamesrod if he would put together his own African mixtape to raise awareness for the Project Ø and #DanceLikeMandela...and here it is!

"2018 was a turning point in my 20-year love affair with Brasilian music, starting with the release of my reworks compilation Férias ’77 on Razor-N-Tape, and culminating in my recent trip to the Mareh Festival. Aside from being one of the gig highlights of my career - on a boat full of joyful dancers - the whole experience really deepened my feeling for the unique culture and music of Brasil. I came home buzzing, and ran this mix off in one shot without much planning, using some vinyl, some digital, some edits, and some originals. I hope that joy comes through in the music!"

To celebrate this new accolade we asked Mr Kirkwood to record something different for our mixtape series...

"i've spent most of my time on my own during Lockdown.
This has pushed me into some deep contemplation at times, and that contemplation has most frequently been about my relationship with music.

If you consider that music is both the way i make my living and also the main way that I project myself to the world, then you'll probably agree it's a pretty natural thing for me to think about.

What I discovered was that I'd become unhappy with a lot of the things I was choosing to do

This revelation made me decide to reapproach what I do with my time, what I give value to, and what I choose to tell people is significant.

The most immediate change is that I now find myself working as an artist in Residence for Sage Gateshead, which is one of the most important Concert Venues in the UK.

Over the next 10 months the Sage is supporting me in making a performance piece which will push me as a music maker and conceptual artist, and which will allow me to explore another thing that I find very important, that is to say the notion of my regional identity and the things that I can do that use my skills and experience to make the region a better place to live.

Further to that I've found the time to work on other less immediately obvious projects which resonate more deeply with me.

I've finished an album with the Vocalist and songwriter "Marske" which will be out before the end of the year, and (despite some crazy curveballs) I'm making headway on my multi-vocalist album project as "Antisocial Alliance".

I'm also committed to launching a not-for-profit organisation very soon which will use the music I've dedicated my life to in a way that helps underprivileged or marginalised people in the North East of England.
The nicest thing I've found about all of this is that it's got me back to simply engaging with music because it pleases me, not because I need to pay the bills or because I feel like I need to use it to climb up some kind of imaginary pecking order.

All of these changes have meant that I get to record mixes like this one. 
Free from anyone else's opinion and for no other reason the fact that I wanted to record it.

I'm not saying it's the end for me as a DJ or House Music producer, as that's something I think is in my bones.
I think I am saying that I'll be doing it a lot more selectively now and that if you ever catch me doing either in future then you can be sure that the only reason I'm doing it is because I completely believe in what it is I'm doing at the time.

It was a great job, but I really needed to go back to doing it for the love instead"

GOURANGA MIXTAPE: Bed Wetter (aka Man Power) - Teenagers, Love Letters and Heartstrings

What is Rebetiko [Ρεμπέτικο]?
Rebetiko grew out of the music of the displaced Greeks of Asia Minor, who thrived in the poor and struggling neighbourhoods of Piraeus, a port city in the region of Attica (now Athens). This new music genre was born as a form of artistic expression for the Lumpenproletariat of post-war Greece in the first part of the 20th Century.

The roots of the genre originate in Asia Minor (with Smyrna as the main focus point). In his book “The History of Rebetiko”, Nikos Sideris states: “Rebetiko was born in Asia Minor. Rebetiko with bouzouki was born in Piraeus”.

Stevie R is a London-based producer at the top of his game...
He continues to push these creative boundaries through his output, collaborations and his labels, Inside Out Records, of which he is the founder, and on Chapter 24, for whom he does A&R. The latter imprint released his last mini album, a two-part release that features collaborations with Parisinos and Anna Maria X, both of which further explore the signature Rebetronica sound that he's coined.
