This year’s SONA holds special significance as it is not only the end of term, but also the address ahead of South Africa’s celebration of 30 years of freedom and democracy. Magwenya also touched on the issue of the National Health Insurance Bill which is currently being debated in court.

On Wednesday, the President received a visit from a bipartisan congressional delegation from the United States of America in Tuynhuys, Cape Town. The delegation is visiting South Africa at the invitation of the Aspen Institute. President Ramaphosa emphasised the strength of bilateral relations as evidenced through several meetings and calls he has had with President Joe Biden and official engagements between South African and US delegations which have allowed for a constructive exchange of views and further cemented the ties between the two countries. The engagement also covered South Africa’s economic opportunities with a focus on the expansion of trade and investment ties. President Ramaphosa congratulated the delegation for the upcoming celebration of 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence in July 2026 as South Africa marks 30 years of freedom and democracy.

Deputy President Paul Mashatile addressed the 14th Policy Dialogue Forum (PDF) of the International Task Force on Teachers for Education. The Task Force is a global platform for education stakeholders, which aims to foster advocacy, knowledge exchange, peer learning and monitoring progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 4 on quality education. The minister of Basic Education Angie Motshega and deputy minister Dr Reginah Mhaule joined the deputy president. Mashatile highlighted some of the Government initiatives aimed at attracting more citizens to the teaching profession to ensure that the quality of education is maintained at a higher standard.

1The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has created a one-stop shop to streamline business applications and give effect to the recommendations of its visa reform initiative. The one-stop shop, which is known as the Trusted Employer Scheme (TES), was created with the view to efficiently run the visa regime and to speedily process applications. The Trusted Employer Scheme was launched on 11 October 2023. To qualify for membership, an employer, investor or business needs to demonstrate that it has the financial strength to employ a foreign national; that it runs training programmes for South African citizens, and that it is adheres to good corporate practices.

The Ministry of Water and Sanitation says it is accelerating the completion of the Mandlakazi Regional Bulk Water Scheme to ensure sustainable water provision in Zululand. The water supply scheme aims to bring relief to the community of Mandlakazi, which is between Kwa-Nongoma and Mkhuze towns in Zululand District Municipality, as well as Hlabisa under uMkhanyakude District Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal. Giving an update on the progress made to move the project toward completion, the department said that the Water and Sanitation Minister, Senzo Mchunu convened a meeting between the department, uMngeni-uThukela Water, Zululand, and uMkhanyakude District Municipalities. This was followed by the Minister’s announcement that the scheme would be taken over by the department and transferred into a Ministerial Scheme.

Mulroney, who served as Prime Minister from 1984 to 1993, passed away at the age of 84. On behalf of government and the nation, President Ramaphosa offered his deep condolences to the government and people of Canada, especially Mulroney’s family on the passing of a leader who holds a special place in South Africa’s history. On Freedom Day 2015, Mulroney was honoured with the National Order of the Companions of OR Tambo (Gold) “for his exceptional contribution to the liberation movement of South Africa"

Delivering a jey note address at the 2024 Forbes Woman Africa Awards in Johannesburg last Friday, the Minister said, the ultimate goal is for women to develop sustainable enterprises that contribute to the country’s gross domestic product, employment, equity and economic transformation to enable women to have equal access to and control over economic resources. She also touched on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s preferential procurement target announced in 2020 to accelerate the empowerment of women, youth and people with disabilities in business. Police shot and killed nine suspects during a shootout in Mariannhill, KwaZulu-Natal. KZN police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says the suspects have been wanted for a number of cases. In an interview Netshiunda said, the suspects have been committing violent crimes such as armed robberies, rapes, murders and house robberies. He added that, earlier this morning police received intelligence on their whereabouts. Police team erroneously knocked at the wrong house and the next thing they heard were gunshots from the opposite house.

The Department of Home Affairs is set to open its offices for five hours a day on Saturdays from 06 April to 25 May 2024, excluding the 27 April 2024 public holiday, for ID collection services. This also includes facilitation of new applications and issuance of Temporary Identity Certificates. The Department says, toffices will also be resolving challenges pertaining to duplicates, amendments, rectifications, and dead-alive cases with the required supporting documents. The offices will open from 8 am to 1 pm and mobile offices are also scheduled to return to deliver IDs in the remote areas where they took applications from. In addition, clients can now book appointments to collect their Smart ID Cards and Green barcoded ID books before visiting offices by using the Branch Appointment Booking System which is available on the Department of Home Affairs website- www.dha.gov.za,” said the department on Thursday.

The court case of KPMG bursary specialist, Fidelis Moema, has been postponed to 9 April 2024 for formal bail application.This after Moema, who faces charges of theft, fraud, and money laundering, appeared at the Palm Ridge Commercial Crimes Court on after he handed over himself to the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crimes Investigation team in Johannesburg. According to a statement from the South African Police Service (SAPS), Moema is accused of misdirecting funds intended for bursary recipients between 2021 and 2022. It is allegedly that, instead of paying university fees on behalf of students, the accused would pay the money into the bank accounts belonging to friends and individuals who own companies and, the money would then be paid back into his personal bank account. As per the SAPS statement, Moema's fraudulent actions led to the audit firm suffering a loss of R16.5 million.

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture Minister, Mr Zizi Kodwa, expresses heartfelt sadness at the passing of South African Boxing legend Mr Dingaan Thobela. In a professional career which spanned from 1986 until 2006, Thobela was a multiple world boxing champion, having won the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight, and World Boxing Council (WBC) super-middleweight titles. The Rose of Soweto was also a recipient of the Andrew Mlangeni Green Jacket Award. Minister Kodwa says, “Dingaan ‘The Rose of Soweto’ Thobela was a champion fighter who captured the hearts and souls of the nation. The Rose of Soweto progressed from a prolific amateur boxer to become a three-time world champion as a professional. "Minister Kodwa said that Thobela fought in some of the most memorable bouts, such as the fights against Tony Lopez for the WBA lightweight title and against Glenn Catley to win the WBC super-middleweight title.
