For those who were asking what the mysterious mix that was put on after the DJs stopped playing outside at the Life and Death party in Art Basel, here it is. A mellow trip prepared by Greg from Thugfucker and presented here as a little thank you from all of us at Life and Death. 

It's been an amazing year and we're so very appreciative of all the support we've gotten as we've adventured forwards on this incredible musical trip together. We've got lots of exciting things planned for the year ahead (and beyond!) and we look forward to continuing together on this ride wherever it takes us.

On the list of recurrent Rust favorites, Rumpistol has kept us enamored with his compositions for the entirety of our label’s active years. A musician and producer of remarkable vision and professionalism, each successive Rumpistol release has gradually unveiled more and more of the story hidden in sound, playing out more like a musical drama than just a catalog. Consequently, Nebula is much more than just an album:

The LP is inspired along two mingled fronts, being both a testament and a love letter to the waning awe that the Space Race (and its implications) imbued amongst the many peoples of the world, while also being designed with an implicit focus on the results on stage. Nebula’s arrangements work in tandem with these ideas, combining jazz, classical motifs, and modern electronic music, utilizing an array of both vintage and contemporary tones, synthesis, and compositional approaches to channel the all-encompassing wonder of the cosmos. Its pacing is entirely unlike the more dance-oriented offerings in the Rumpistol discography, replacing frenetic energy with the draw of tempered, introspective listening. Explicitly recorded and designed alongside a cast of instrumentalists and visual designers, the record is the next logical step in Rumpistol’s recent grounding in his consistent live ensemble, breaking out of the traditional molds that tend to keep producers narrowed to a single lane. Naturally, for The Rust’s upcoming 95th release, we can think of no more perfect a match than the Nebula LP.

For my 7th show on @nts_live I was back in the studio playing all sorts of music with new stuff from @mim-suleiman (produced by Maurice Fulton!!), @anthonynaplesofficial, @ketiov , @upsammy and Lifted on Pan. 

In the second hour of the show I was honoured to broadcast a guestmix by the manchester based dj, SNO. I met Nongi in a transfer to Houghton Festival last year. On our way to meet some friends on the last day of the festival we walked past a stage on the middle of the sit and were instantly grabbed by the music we heard. It turned out to be SNO. The next two hours we danced in amazement as she played back to back killers,  It was the highlight of the festival. 

SNO's understanding of music as a whole was developed and harnessed in the dusty streets of a township called  Bophelong, South Africa in the apartheid era where music provided strength and hope to the marginalised. Since her set at the world renown establishment that is Soup Kitchen in Manchester 2015, where she is currently based, she has since performed in festivals like Dimensions Festival, Houghton Festival, Beathearder,  Meet Me There Weekender in Ghana, Meadows in the Mountains, Africa Oye in Liverpool and clubs across Europe ( Russia and mostly in England) and South Africa.
SNO has shared stage with luminaries such as Tama Sumo & Lakuti, Sassy J, Carista, Gilles Peterson, Mr Scruff, Awesome Tapes From Africa, Jeremy Underground, DJ Okapi, Esa, Kuniyuki Takahashi. African artists including the maverick Tony Allen, Ata Kak, Amadou & Mariam and the Brazilian jazz funk trio, Azymuth. SNO currently holds a residency in Manchester under the Banana Hill banner on a monthly basis and a NTS show.

Samuel, born in and based in Amsterdam  has been involved in the techno scene for several years. The Dutch DJ joined Monument first as a writer in 2017, which he was eager to do due to his increased passion for techno and ambient music over the years. Not much later he also picked up the mantle of MNMT’s head of podcast. Sam performed his very first DJ gig In June of 2019 at MNMT Festival, with a 2-hour melancholic ambient mix as the opening of the final day of the festival, to which he was overwhelmed with all the positive feedback. This motivated him to focus more and more on his development as a DJ. What followed were gigs in various countries in Asia, Europe and also United States throughout 2019 and early 2020.

암스테르담에서 태어나고 기반을 둔 Samuel 은 몇 년 동안 테크노계에 관여해 왔다. 이 네덜란드 DJ 는 테크노와 엠비언트 음악에 대한 열정이 높아지면서 2017년 작가로서 먼저 MNMT 에 합류했다. 얼마 후 그는 MNMT 의 팟캐스트를 이끌게 되었다. Samuel 은 2019년 6월 MNMT 페스티벌에서 2시간 동안 멜랑콜릭한 믹스로 첫 DJ 공연을 펼쳤으며, 이 축제에서 그는 수많은 긍정적인 반응을 받았다. 이것은 그가 DJ 로서 그의 발전에 점점 더 집중하도록 자극했다. 그 뒤로, 그는 2019년과 2020년 초에 걸쳐 아시아, 유럽, 그리고 미국의 다양한 국가에서 플레이했다.
