"Qgomu is the creation of a bunch of black super-swag adolescents who chose this Rub-a-Dub name after the noise generated by a stone falling on a floor tile: in the local slang “gqom iz da sound u get wen u drop a rock on tiles”. And then they all dance BHENGA!!! Everything happens in a DIY-oriented universe where organic and home-made samples (dog barks, whip lashes, drumming sounds) are grafted in a deep, enveloping and almost ghostly rhythmic texture.
There is an evident line of continuity with the south African house movement, though with totally new elements: not only sounds that take us down in the circles of hell of dub step, but mostly an imaginary, sort of meta-historical influence inspired by an implicit anti-slavery anger. 
It’s something like a ground-zero of black radical movements that go much beyond any trivial political claims, embracing a whole galaxy of signs bound to leave a distinct mark in the evolution of dance music"

‘The Sound of Durban Vol.1’ represents the first full length compilation collecting the sound of the suburbs and townships of Durban, South Africa known as “gqom”. The album unites many of the local young producers of this fresh genre over 15 tracks on double LP and digital (with four bonus tracks) released via the Gqom Oh! label on 29th January 2016.

The result of Rome-based DJ and musician Nan Kolè teaming up with South Africa-based Lerato Phiri, the Gqom Oh! label was set up to highlight the music and artists of Durban, the often overlooked cradle of the new South African sound. Speaking to The FADER in October this year, Kolè says of Phiri “Thanks to her work the artists I was interested in had greater trust in a stranger who contacted them from Italy to promote a kind of music that even South African promoters don't want to promote or to enter the club.”

Derived from an onomatopoeic Zulu word signifying a drum, “gqom” - in the local slang - “iz da sound u get wen u drop a rock on tiles”. This extraordinary, apocalyptic bass music encompasses many influences. Each polyrhythmic track draws on the darker side of electronic music, hip hop, soundsystem culture, kwaito, UK funky and deep tribal African vibrations. As Kolè puts it: “You can feel the troubled history of South Africa. It’s riot music." Tied to a specific dance called bhenga, gqom happens in a DIY-oriented universe, grafting organic and homemade samples on sourced software to create this wholly unique sound. The label’s greater aim is to invest in much needed technology to help build a local creative infrastructure.

With its mix of ethnic tradition and urban tension it has been a cradle of cultural phenomena. In its own way it is a country of great wealth, particularly rich of contradictions, yet 20 years after the end of apartheid little appears to have changed for the millions of black people that live in its notorious townships. It is from this background that innovations are continually being injected into the living body of the local music culture. The heartbeat of Durban is gqom.

The word Crudo [ˈkruːdo] in Italian translates as “raw” and this is the overarching concept around the latest Gqom Oh! Release. 

It is set to be in collaboration with Crudo Volta - a young Rome-based collective who focused on visual curation and dj culture. The mixtape is the soundtrack of the Woza Taxi documentary. Making the documentary in April 2016 - whilst visiting his artists and their families in Durban - label boss Nan Kolè painstakingly narrowed down this selection of tracks for the release. The trip lent a tremendous amount of in-sight to Nan Kolè, granting him both a detailed and broad view of the Gqom scene and what Gqom means to the youth of the township (for they consist the core music makers and listeners of Gqom).

Their unique sound, which took Europe by storm at the start of 2016, is a way for the youth in the township to express themselves - something that music does the world over - but moreover enables them to express their pride and experiences in their Zulu culture and history. Mawbestana from Forgotten Souls gave some insight into how the music was made. He said in the documentary “…Everyone thinks we have a mega studio with huge speakers but we are just ‘Hlanganisa’..” Hlanganisa is a zulu word literally translated as 'putting together'; This refers to creating something out of the few elements available to you “…Just like when you scrap the bottom of a pan to get some food out of it..” cited Mawbestana. 

The release features 14 tracks showcasing different and new music from Durban  - spanning Core Tribe through Sgubhu to Gqom. The 90 minute tape will consist of two sides, with Side A containing seven tracks and Side B containing a continuous mix and a digital download code granting access to the entire compilation. 

The tape will be release in ‘package’ format designed by Crudo Volta alongside a photography book with the best pictures from the trip to Durban by Tommaso Cas-sinis, a limited edition t-shirt and access to an online premiere of the documentary.

From the sounds of Dominowe in Newlands East in Durban, South Africa, we are now going to the opposite side of the hill in Newlands West with TLC Fam!
For those who are not familiar to the crew, TLC Fam are a crew from the township of Newlands West formed by 23 members.
All the members have different roles in the crew and showcase different talents such as DJ’ing, Producing, Dancing, MCing, Promoting and taxi businesses. TLC fam was established in 2011 as a dance group until 2014 where they met distribution boys " they helps us with gqom tracks production since we were dancing with their gqom music." Dj Magic and Resto tried to learn to make their own TLC gqom in 2014 until now as TLC gqom hosts.
Their sounds represents a strong, powerful Zulu culture from the sounds, lyrics of the songs to the song titles as well.
The main producers Resto and Dj Magic created a very unique and original style of gqom, the strength of TLC is being as a real family where everybody help each others. TLC fam gqom is loud and powerful it can break your speakers which is why they play this out to packed dance floors till the early morning. TLC fam are the originator/creator of the “Taxi Kick” style of Gqom which has a very particular distorted multi layered hard kick made with some specific techniques on fruity loops. The kick is made specifically for taxis in the townships and quickly became viral with the new generation of gqom and core tribe producers in Durban. "Our Gqom is so different from others cause we got our personal style where we put more vocals in our tracks and we got our own kicks [Taxi kick] and our own type of gqom where we came with hard kicks which you can play them in taxis and big speakers ".

TLC fam are the originator/creator of the “Taxi Kick” style of Gqom which has a very particular distorted multi layered hard kick made with some specific techniques on fruity loops. The kick is made specifically for taxis in the townships and quickly became viral with the new generation of gqom and core tribe producers in Durban. "Our Gqom is so different from others cause we got our personal style where we put more vocals in our tracks and we got our own kicks [Taxi kick] and our own type of gqom where we came with hard kicks which you can play them in taxis and big speakers ".

Gqom Oh! records presents "The Originators"; a five track EP respresenting the past, the present and the future of Gqom - the thunderous club sound from Durban, South Africa. 

The Gqom Oh! label was set up by Rome-based DJ and musician Nan Kolè to highlight the music and artists of Durban, the often overlooked cradle of the new South African sound. The label's 2016 compilation - ‘Gqom Oh! The Sound of Durban Vol.1’ - broke the sound out of South Africa, Pitchfork calling it “The largest and most thoughtful survey of the genre available to western audiences to date”. Recently joining Kolè is Sboniso Brandon Luthuli aka Citizen Boy on the ground as local A&R.

Making music from a young age and building up a solid reputation in South Africa, he’s known as the "King of Gqom". Griffit Vigo, a real innovator in the Gqom genre, grew up in the same area as DJ Lag and has attained a legendary status amongst his peers.

Nobody knew where he was but everybody was playing him and sometimes using his beats to make new songs. The main track 'Ree’s Vibe' was the peak moment of DJ Lag's sets all over the world. If Lag is the Gqom King then Griffit Vigo is the Gqom Legend."

Sbucardo is one of the most respected DJs around the streets and the townships of Durban. Featuring Abnormal on 'Iphoyisa', whose lyrics in Zulu translate to “We at the club, Mr police man don’t disturb us", the track represents the South African scene and Gqom culture in Durban very well. Naked Boyz (officially the first in Durban to explore new territories in broken beat in 2011) 'Story Teller' is characteristic of the Sgubhu style, a blend of Gqom with more conventional house sounds, the new genre taking over Durban and finding its way onto mainstream radio. Scene kingpins Rude Boyz round off the release's line up of Gqom originators with 'Umshunto'.

After introducing Griffit Vigo ‘the Gqom legend’ on the Originators EP on Gqom Oh! Records back in February with the percussive anthem Ree's Vibe and the historical track featured on MTV Base Gqom Nation documentary "Gqom 5” - Gqom Oh! is finally ready to release Griffit Vigo’s first solo single ‘DJ’ on a 7" vinyl, with on the b-side another Gqom viral Durban track coming from the numeric series "Gqom 6”. 
Griffit Vigo, a real innovator in the Gqom genre 
who grew up in Clermont and started to produce 
music around 2007, has attained a legendary 
status amongst his peers as he was one of the originators of gqom, inventing sounds as Umshanelo (meaning broom in Zulu) and chopping vocals that everybody then started to sample. 
Many of his beats were appropriated or sampled, so now the time has finally come for him to show his talent and unique style and inspire the listeners in the same way he inspired everyone in Durban. 
This single introduces his forthcoming album on Gqom Oh!, to be released in September/October 2018 entitled ‘Gqom is Alive’. 
As the Gqom sound has massively changed in the past year, taking over South Africa and the world, also by evolving into a more commercial-focused and melodic branch which derives from Sgubhu, Griffit Vigo’s intention is to keep the original Gqom sound as pure and authentic as it was when it was first birthed whilst still pushing the sound forward in the future.

"Away from Home" is the Dominowe demo Album that was supposed to be released in late 2020, but unfortunately someone broke into Dion's house and stole everything: Two laptops, one hard drive with the back up of those tracks, Sound system, clothes and tv as well. 
With this release Gqom Oh! aim is to get crowdfunding to help Dominowe rebuild his home studio and achieve the necessary funds to let Dominowe get back in the game. 
100% of the proceeds is going directly to Dion Blose and his family. 

The album "Away from Home" was written in Inanda, a durban township where Dominowe moved to, leaving his parents house in Newlands, in early february 2020 to be able to connect with musicians, singers and other Gqom producers who lived in the area. 
In late March Dominowe was going to Inanda Fm to submit an interview and asking for a radio show, once back home, he found that someone had broken into his house. 

It was and it's still very painful, here at Gqom Oh! We were very impressed of this initial demo as always with Dominowe's ability to experiment and find new, original unique directions in the Gqom, Core Tribe and Afrohouse style. 

The album contains 10 tracks unmixed and not mastered but you can still feel the incredible vibe of his work. 
It features musicians and singers: Mr Alhab and Mike Makhosini. 
All the other vocals are made by Dominowe himself. 
It's an incredible journey into Dion Blose aka Dominowe's life between Durban, and his past gigs/trip in Russia, France and Switzerland.
