In The Midst Of A Dark Night 01

The original song for which this is based comes from Souli in northwestern Greece.  During the Souliote war of 1803 the souliotes began evacuating the town after being defeated by the forces of the local Ottoman-Albanian ruler, Ali Pasha.  During the evacuation, a small group of Souliot women and children were trapped by Ali's army atop the mountain of Zalongo.  According to legend, they held hands, singing and dancing, and in order to avoid capture and enslavement, the women threw their children first and then themselves off a steep cliff, committing suicide.  This piano arrangement depicts the intensity of that event.

Floating Clouds - Tan Dun

This piece is based on a repeated note ostinato from the 2nd movement of Beethoven's 7th Symphony.  Corigliano here is experimenting in minimalism and includes aleatoric elements.  The Fantasia was commissioned for the seventh Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and made possible by a generous grant from the Amon G. Carter Foundation. in 1983.
