There's something timeless about Grace Lightman. Maybe it's that honeyed voice that ever-so gently tugs at your heartstrings. Perhaps it's those careful and considered nods to the iconic moments, faces and places of musical history. Or it could be the turn and twist of her songs, at once both familiar and fresh. Ultimately, it all adds up to be something unique, borrowing from, redrafting and bridging the then and now. 

Her debut outing 'Vapour Trails' is four and half minutes of pure, crystalline beauty. Calling to mind the delicacy of 'The Sensual World' era Kate Bush and the intricate arrangements of Judee Sill, it works around a simple piano line and aching vocal, building up into a squall of military drums, French horn and an overall sense of soaring, genuine intensity. There's something rare going on here; the kind of track that seems to grow and change every time you listen, that collects and respects the roots and branches of its making, but builds something totally new with and around them. 

Following a period fronting London psych-rockers The Hypnotic Eye, Grace Lightman found herself suddenly solo and keen to draw her influences and passions - the warped weirdness of Vincent Gallo films, the swagger and style of Debbie Harry, and the understated musical sensuality of Francois Hardy and Nico -  into something of her own. Armed with an agenda, Grace sought out a like-minded collaborator and found herself in the East London basement studio of producer PJ Pearson (Liu Bei). Bonding over a mutual love of the Twilight Zone and torch songs, the pair began creating a set of songs, the first of which was 'Vapour Trails'.

Dog Orchestra – “Broke”
Before there was Dog Orchestra, the electronic dream-pop collective, there was Dog Orchestra, the intriguing discovery. “We never wanted it to be about us. We wanted it to be about the band and the music as a separate entity,” says Daniel. “As much as I love being part of Dog Orchestra,” adds Niklas, “I want to enjoy it the same way an audience member might. No wall between the band and the listener—that’s the goal.”

With mutual interests in everything from indie rock to dance to hip hop, they joined a few pop bands, which ultimately imploded. Says Niklas, “It wasn’t until me and Daniel moved in together that I felt the music began to sound as good as it should,” with songs like “Broke.” The two alternated between laying down the musical groundwork and writing lyrics, a practice they continue today. “It was effortless,” Daniel continues. “We were inseparable after that, and I remember my sister telling me that my dad thought we were a couple.” 

Dog Orchestra started recording guest vocals for their EP in Stockholm, before relocating to Berlin. “It’s less restricted than Stockholm, where everything is clean and at a right angle—even the crooked ones are calculated,” says Daniel. Berlin’s grittier culture represented possibility. “It’s a city in shambles being rebuilt. The opportunities felt less policed. Like the whole city needs a good paint job, and no one is looking over your shoulder telling you how to paint it.” Their experience followed in kind.

On Friday April 7th, the Danish artist Wangel releases his new single Reason. The song is written to his unborn child and is about passing something on – all the love in the world, and maybe a mental disorder.

What will you tell your child, if it inherits your mental illness?

Peter Wangel, the singer and songwriter behind the Danish artist name Wangel, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 19. Now he and his girlfriend are expecting their first child – and a lot of questions start to emerge. With the new release Reason, Wangel is trying to address these in the best possible fashion.

“My love in your veins”
Reason is first of all a welcome and a tribute to the new life, which is on its way. An honest song about facing difficulties in life, but at the same time about trusting unconditional love to be the most important thing of all.

- I myself have been brought up with lots of care and love, which gave me the strength and confidence to overcome those challenges my diagnosis contains. I want to pass that strength on to my child – no matter what – and that is what Reason is about, Peter Wangel says.

Moreover, Reason is the forerunner of Wangel’s new coming album, which will be released in September 2017.

The new single and the new album are inspired by the Norwegian author Karl Ove Knausgård and his most famous books that bluntly report on his private and family affairs.

Peter Wangel:

- My previous records have especially revolved around great, ‘lonely’ emotions – things that were only inside of me. This time it’s different. At the moment my emotions are affected by something from the outside – my girlfriend, my child – and it is at this point, that Karl Ove Knausgård and his way of telling stories has helped to me to be very explicit.

Wangel is a co-operation between Peter Wangel and producer Kasper Ejlerskov Leonhardt. In May they will perform five concerts in Denmark, starting with SPOT Festival in Aarhus the 5th of May. The two of them will bring along drummer Kristoffer Tophøj.
