This was my first week of college at Rollins College!

I wish that I could experience this one more time. I tell these kids nowadays about how the times back then were totally awesome and all the clubs, The Edge, Simon's, Amphitheatre, Firestone, Cyberzone, Florida Theater, to name a few, were always peaceful and full of love. my birthday is September 4th and I had some truly forgettable unforgettable ones and this one started them. Thanks for the memories and the beats! Peace!

This is the first time I ever played at the Edge on November 26th, 1994. I spun from 11pm-12am after Cliff T inside the club! This night was a defining night in my DJ career. Thanks to DJ Icey for the opportunity that lead to quite a few guest spots at the Edge!  The Edge was my second home, I grew immensely as an underground DJ at that club. The feeling I got while spinning there can NEVER be duplicated!

Aahz was a nightclub theme at the Beacham Theatre in Orlando, Florida from 1988–1992. The Aahz-themed events were part of the "Late Night" series at the Beacham. The final Aahz-themed events were held between September 1991 and July 1992.

The Edge was a nightclub in Orlando, Florida that opened in 1992. It was a popular venue for the Florida breaks, House, and early trance music scene, which emerged in the late 1980s at the Beacham Theatre. There were also Edge Clubs in Jacksonville and Fort Lauderdale.  

The Masquerade Atlanta opened in 1989 at the historic DuPre Excelsior Mill converted into a concert/nightclub venue, hosting styles ranging from punk rock to electronic music. Its three stages, named after the afterlife destinations—Heaven, Purgatory, and Hell—forge distinct musical identities. The club still exists at a new location but it will never have the same vibe it once carried.

The Return

This track is inspired by the Mills of my home town (Bolton) and surrounding area and the warmth of northern people. In particular its about how they retook over these spaces after the hollowing out of the industrial north as production moved to India and the Far East. They are used for multitude of purposes from housing, to light industry, work spaces, art spaces, and a few acid house raves. The track starts with a simple beat and then gradually builds up layers of dark stabs, smooth modulating synths, and crazy lush pads, like a factory machine spinning into life or like the Northern spirit adapting to its new future.

I've taken roughly 13 months since I first started compiling tracks working away on Volume II of "My Definition of Chill." Like a squirrel storing nuts for the winter I would find some tracks and add them to the project and forget about it for awhile. A couple months go past and I forage a few more. 

Well, it's ready now. Putting together dance mixes is a relatively straightforward process for me. A chill mix is a different beast entirely. I'm going to be honest and tell you most chill mixes bore the hell out of me. Maybe that's just me not searching out wide and far enough to find music that entertains me. 

Either way, in putting together this mix, I logged many many hours in compiling, editing, and mixing it together. Along the way I was able to mix in some of my all time favorite songs by favorite artists of mine (Ulrich Schnauss and Underworld) along with some new classics (Phoenix, LCD Soundsystem), some covers (Toto, Walk on the Wild Side) and hidden gems. Back again to leisurely rock your boomboxes with My Definition of Chill Vol. 3. I've been overjoyed with the reaction I've received from the first two installments.  What began as a mix I was initially going to keep to myself ended up becoming my most listened to mix I've released. For volume 3 my life in San Francisco was a big inspiration for the songs that made it in. A departure in style from both volumes 1 and 2. I'm really happy to share these 22 songs with you that I've been listening to for the last 6 months I've been putting this together. Lots of cool stuff I've run across with vocals from Bob Marley, Al Green and Paul McCartney, a classic from DJ Shadow remixed in elegant style, old school chill classics with Orbital and Nightmares on Wax (I had to include them at some point) and some nods to particular friends with a few of the songs. I want to send a big thank you to everyone who has expressed their gratitude for the My Definition of Chill mixes. It keeps the wheels turning knowing other people are really appreciating the end result.

Deckard - My Definition of Chill - Vol. 3

Once upon a time...

There was sleepy town in the middle of Florida. When Mickey Mouse went to bed the local kids would head downtown to dance all night to a new sound.  This was the early 1990's and the rave scene had just started to explode.  One of the best local clubs was THE EDGE. It hosted many epic events where the biggest dance acts and the best young djs would grace their sound system. DJ Icey started there and was the head promoter for the club. Acts including Rhythm Section, Chemical Brothers, 2 Bad Mice and All Boxed In played here.   The local rave crowd from around the state would come out by the thousands.

This amazing 14 HOUR set was posted by one of the visual performers - Laser Matt.  Click the download link to get the full 14 hours.  It was recorded in the main room from the second the club opened to late in the next day when the last person left.  See clubs didn't really close back then. They usually waited for the last person to leave. There is a reason why downtown Orlando closes at 2am now. This is it. We are guilty. Sorry kids.

For those that weren't there this music may sound old and strange. For those that were, it will surely inspire nostalgic memories of a time that will never be repeated.

Energy Rave 1 - The Edge (Orlando, FL)- Sept 4th, 1994

Electronic music aficionado since 1991.   DJ Since 94. Producer since  2001. Record Label Owner (Stellar Records), early 00’s.  Collector of classic 90’s DJ Sets.  Current purveyor of modern progressive breaks and deep house via Black Coffee dj mix series. 

Had the privilege of “being there” in halcyon days of the early US rave scene at ground zero - Orlando, FL.  Our  (at the time) small, Disney focused town become the launch pad for the American Rave scene via the amazing DJs and promoters that were ahead of their time led by Kimball Collins at Aahz  playing  upfront dance music (simply called house back then) that was generally only found across the Atlantic. Kimball and other local DJs mixed music expertly in our burgeoning underground clubs here to the late hours of the morning often bleeding into the next day igniting a decade long explosion of club music throughout the city.  If you were there, you know.   Aahz spawned a host of iconic clubs including Firestone (now Vanguard), The Edge, the Abyss, Barberella, Marz and on and on.  Huge one off raves like Trance Atlantic and Zen fast followed  setting the stage for todays EDC, bringing more global talent to our dancing city, laying down musical history that everyone that lived it will certainly “Rave” about for the rest of their lives. 

Being a part of that scene led me, like many others, to pursue my own path in creating electronic music.  A passion for DJing led to endless Orlando house parties in early 90s, before joining the Stellar Brand/team in DC providing a residency at Tracks nightclub and  opening up gigs at clubs throughout the DC, Northern Virginia and Maryland before returning to Orlando in 2004.  

Still listening, buying, spinning, sharing the music that moves me. It has been and always will be all about the music.
