This was recorded purely as a tribute to a musical hero.

Sea Song

Recorded by Philip Smiley and myself on his brand new (at the time) Nord Lead and ancient Casio, sometime in 2000-2001. 

Around that time I played this recording to my good friend Bob (or, Nolan, Green, of Grassy Knoll fame). His first reaction was to say something along the lines of: "You must really like Robert Wyatt." At the time I had no idea who that was, and said as much. Bob promptly lent me "End Of An Ear" and "Shleep." My musical landscape was forever changed for the better for it. So, thanks Bob!

My Rowboat

On the cusp of the millennium I attempted several times to record a solo album. I had, what I thought at the time, a pretty good collection of songs, but no budget, and little recording experience. So I cobbled together a random assortment of instruments, a Tascam 424, and a Mac G3 with a bootleg copy of Digital Performer and decided to have a go at it anyway. I never managed to finish this sprawling opus, and have since lost all the original tapes and computer files. However, some rough mixes of individual tracks have survived, and a few of them aren't too cringeworthy. This is one of them.

This is a recording we made in 2004. We never quite finished it, but I kind of like its unfinished quality. Erik Knoyer is on bass; Ben aka Brodrick aka Jigsaw Jones in on snare drum.

"Falling Off" by Arctic Square

So my friend Fletcher gave me one of his spare melodicas, and I instantly fell in love with it. This is my first recorded exploration of what it this thing could do. I used the Garageband app on my iPhone and laid down a simple modal background of virtual drums, bass and piano, cranking up the reverb to cover the many flubs, then improvised two tracks of melodica over the top.

So, I'm working on one or possibly three new albums right now. This song should fit somewhere. I'm not sure where. I haven't really even finished writing it. But I sort of love it how it is right now. Maybe you will, too.

On February 4, 2019 I had the privilege of appearing on Joe McGasko's inimitable radio show Surface Noise, on WFMU. Originally we were going to bring the whole band in, but due to a pipe-leak, the radio studio was unusable, so I went in and did it solo-acoustic, live on-air. To give a little taster of what might've been, my bandmates Simeon Seigel (piano) and David Ohliger (lead guitar) went into Jamie Siegel's fantastic JRock studios to record a couple of songs to bring along.
