The motive, that's what I'm thinking

Sake O Sake

i was sitting at the counter of a Japanese restaurant, drinking rice wine, that’s sake, it was piping hot
All alone in that restaurant, people swirling around me, the sake really hit the spot
It was Asian and aromatic, I thought, you know, this drink is just about everything I'm not.

So I had another bottle, savoring the flavor, as a guy came to the counter, sat down right next to me. 
He also ordered sake, i looked at him, and he looked at me
i toasted him, I said "the sake twins”, he said it seems like it was meant to be. 

We sat there getting sozzled, talking 'bout life and business, the good and the bad, the known and the unknown
About investing money making money losing money, while the PA played some jazz with a saxophone
The guy said this sake's good, why don't we make our own brand, sell it on our own.

For sure a success,
He said a shoe-in more or less
We'll make money in wads

We just need a name, I said that’s my game
"why don’t we call it "for god’s”

The end of an era. The song's topic is a little obscure, but I am a fan of Steely Dan lyrics, where often there are hints but no specifics. For you, I will reveal that I imagine the person talking is a rich and rather idle man living south of the Yangtze River, and that the timing of the first verse is 1644 and of the third verse the following year. In other words, China is about to be taken over by the Manchus. Jonathan Spence wrote a book about such an individual called Return to Dragon Mountain, which I highly recommend.

We dine on an elegant houseboat 
Moored just a skip from the shore
I remember the moment distinctly 
Because I will see it no more.
The warmth of the evening entices, 
I make my excuses and leave
The forecourt is covered with blossoms, 
Fragile and fallen, they grieve.

The rustle of silk as the girls make way
Semi-circled fans in their hands, they sway
The lanterns light the way.
