This album represents 3 years' worth of growth and exploration, both musical and personal. I started this album after a breakup in college and the first songs that were originally on it were vindictive and mean. They were also inaccurate. Much like the water that ripples out of focus on the album's cover, I saw a distorted reflection of the true events in that relationship. It caused me to really sit with myself and understand my shortcomings not only from a lover's standpoint but the ways I was failing myself. I was searching for self-love from an external source, and that was not fair to anyone. Even coming to this realization did not stop the pattern. Life was hectic, I was trying to reestablish myself in south Florida, my family moved to another country, and I had completed the only goal I had ever set before myself. In my distress, I sought out familiar comforts in the form of drugs, women, and drink. I lost myself again. I saw someone I didn't recognize in my reflection. I let the world harden me, and take away my tenderness because I feared it did not deserve it. Reconnecting with people from my past, quitting my abusive work environment, becoming a member of the HYS* team, and getting a visit from my family, all culminated to reinvigorate my drive to finish this project, and honestly to keep living.
