This two-CD set contains four different kinds of iterations of the Viennese spirit: Duets, Lieder, dialect literature, and Schrammelmusik, all of which stem from the vineyard that is Vienna and all of which, for all their variety and different flavor, stand for what makes Vienna, musically speaking. It's a fortuitous confluence of circumstances when a celebrated operatic bass like Günther Groissböck and a likewise popular tenor like Karl-Michael Ebner develop a friendship and discover their mutual love for Wienerlied, Vienna's unique musical and socio-cultural phenomenon. Even more so, if this leads to an album production like the one at hand, which additionally features spoken interludes - witty but also pointed, biting, and sarcastic Viennese poems by Trude Marzik, Josef Weinheber and H. C. Artmann, read with great charm by Christoph Wagner-Trenkwitz - as well as captivating instrumentals by the Philharmonia-Schrammeln.

Raimund Lissy, violinist with the Vienna Philharmonic, has been supporting the rediscovered work of Viennese composer and violinist Joseph Mayseder (1798-1863) for years. He is already presenting his fourth CD with works by the Biedermeier composer, who himself had worked with Haydn, Beethoven and Schubert. Mayseder gained great fame in his lifetime, and bought a city house in Vienna for himself and his son-in-law, a jeweler whose descendants still are active there today. His works, mostly written for chamber music with violin participation, combine virtuosity with Viennese charm. In this volume, the Viennese Mayseder ensemble (with Lissy as 1st violinist) plays the string quartet No. 2 and the string quintet No. 2.

Als österreichischer Ableger des tschechisch/englischen Schallplattenproduzenten gleichen Namens wurde Gramola im Jahr 1924 in Wien gegründet und ist seit damals in allen Tätigkeitsbereichen rund um die Klassische Musik aktiv. Der Schwerpunkt hat sich in den letzten Jahren auf die CD-Produktion verlagert und Gramola ist mit etwa 30 Produktionen jährlich schon seit einiger Zeit Österreichs Klassikproduzent mit der höchsten Produktionsrate. Gramola hatte zunächst natürlich die großen Komponisten der Wiener Klassik, wie Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven und Schubert, im Focus. Im Vordergrund der Produktionsaktivitäten steht jetzt aber auch die Förderung junger österreichischer Musiker und nicht zuletzt die Zusammenarbeit mit "Exilarte", die sich der Musik ermordeter und exilierter Komponisten widmet.
