Train Hound

"This was one of the most fun projects I've been involved in. Seven songs, recorded, mixed, and mastered in about 22 hours total. The result is 8 minutes and 13 seconds of high-energy, high-concept sonic madness. There's a nice buffet of sounds and styles, leaning heavily on 60's instrumental and surf rock. The songs are short, fast, intense, and named after bugs, and that set the pace and mood for the sessions. Everyone was in constant overdrive and firing on all cylinders. We had a little bit of experimental fun, too. I had mics in every room, capturing a lot of interesting and angular tones. Everyone had a gong, a glockenspiel, a kooky organ or something they wanted to sprinkle in. When we stacked up the big noir-ish Mingus horn section on "Daddy Long Legs", Ryan was out in the live room just layering all these parts the rest of us were shouting over the talkback : "Baritone! Do the octave on the tenor! Now the thirteenth on the clarinet!" He didn't have any of the overdubs in his headphones and he kept saying "Are you sure that sounds good?" When he stepped back into the control room for the playback and heard this massive wall of horns, the reaction was priceless! And there's the little moment after Zak's insane, creepy vocal where you hear something that sounds like the spider scampering away… a happy accident from some odd vibration on one of the mics. Everything just came together like magic. So take eight minutes and thirteen seconds to check out The Bug EP.
