Though it sounds like a paradox, it would take a lot of work for a young artist to make rap seem as effortless as Grand National.
The breezy Oklahoma City emcee is a fresh embodiment of the confident, gangster-with-sophistication spirit found in the music of forerunners like Jay Z, André 3000, Pimp C, and Nipsey Hussle. Like the namesake muscle car, National bypasses the gimmicks of competitors in favor of class and performance.
As natural and effortless as the raps on a song like “Switchin’ Lanes” and “Day Ones” might sound, there’s always tremendous attention to detail. There’s a relaxed vibe to National that’s refreshing in a sea of harsh, attention-seeking bedroom rappers. One constant is that National maintains a high standard — be it for his art, production, message, or appearance — that cannot be replicated by those with less commitment.
That level of dedication has not gone unnoticed. Carefully crafted projects like 2017’s Eastside Delicacy and 2019’s El Camino Theory have earned National attention from Oklahoma Gazette, Hip Hop Since 1987, Dead End Hip Hop, and Broke 2 Dope. He’s toured with Cousin Stizz and recently performed at the Tucson Hip-Hop Festival.
National’s music career got its initial spark while attending college in Maryland, but the artist has always remained fiercely loyal to his home community on Oklahoma City’s east side. He wants to help open the minds of people who grew up in the same conditions he did.
“There’s a lot of people that want to do something different, but they can’t go about it,” National said in an interview with Oklahoma Gazette. “They can’t even get it in their mind because of how they were trained up. You can’t reach for the stars.”
National has emerged as one of Middle America’s most promising and unique voices — one that will never compromise itself for the sake of fitting
