Paradise

I wrote this track with my dear friend Sean aka Mutt, who I met in first year University back in Toronto. He produces funky beat diggery type stuff and is a very funny character. He didn't produce music before I met him, but then hustled hard and was signed to Goldie's Metalheadz label within a couple years. I was very impressed and we decided to do a tune together. 

Sean came over with some cool samples he had lifted out of the graffiti documentary 'Style Wars' and we went from there. The tune came out really funky. I programmed all of these guitars and this jazzy arpeggiated Rhodes part but we needed a solo. Stephane Vera (who you may remember from Throwback Thursdays last week) is always down to throw down a jazzy keyboard solo so we just asked him to come over and do it real quick as he was in the neighborhood. 

Colours ended up being Track 1 on Autopirate at Dov's (Muti Music) request. I had initially thought it too mellow to dedicate so much attention to, but it turned out Dov was right. It ended up being a hit with girls and more mature fans and helped to show that ill.GATES wasn't just about Glitchy Hiphop and IDM (which was a common misconception at the time).

After completing the laboratory trial, SQWURL comes upon a long staircase. At the top awaits a Beholder, radiating the swagger of a gang boss. The creature taunts him, its words echoing through the room (the lyrics of the song he sings while hovering around the room) but with Sqwurl's mind sharpened and his dexterity heightened from the laboratory’s trials, now carries an extra edge as he prepares to face the challenge.

Although many producers attempt to bridge palpable psychedelia into their music, few do it as well as Texas producer Somatoast, who's debut EP "Withinity" is out April 30th on Gravitas Recordings. Swirling chord progressions mix with a motley palette of virtuoso sound design, assuring this album is perfect for a headphone excursion. However, this does not detract from the four track EP's danceability -- strong rhythm is carried through the dubby basslines and bouncy drum arrangements. Deeply textured atmospheres wash through the listener's headspace no matter the physical environment, highlighted by fluttering echoes and spacious reverb.
