Alternate Route - disquiet0614

This is my first music making experiment in response to a prompt from Disquiet Junto. The prompt was to think of something I often do when making music and approach it differently. 

I often end up layering arpeggio-like things, partly because I like how it sounds and partly, maybe, to feel like I'm making something "complicated" and therefor impressive. I decided to avoid that and attempt more simplicity...or at least to bring in the complexity elsewhere.

I also rely a bit on midi instruments and quantizing (my rhythm isn't great). While there is still some midi stuff in there, I didn't start with it. I actually laid down some vocals first that ended up mostly being removed or moved. I also used an old Concertmate I found on the street (Radioshack's version of the simple Casio) for the main bass drum and bass sounds. 

After trying several things that weren't working for me, I ended up dipping into my voice memos in my phone and found a recording of me just playing a riff on the piano and singing nonsense, mumbly, improvised lyrics. I then shifted other elements to built the song around that.

this week i utilised a field recording - something i love doing - but used it as a convolution reverb impulse response. out walking in yamanashi, i came across a temple bell. fortuitously it was tuned to c#, my preferred guitar tuning.

i used a 40 second recording of a single toll of the bell as (1) an impulse response for a heavily processed guitar note droning in the left and right channels, and (2) as an unprocessed field recording near the end of the track (1m25s).

to push the whole process a little further, i exported the whole track and then used that as an impulse response for some randomised temple lyre samples in the second half of the track.

if i had a decent sound system i'm sure i'd hear all kinds of problems with resonant frequencies, but i'm happy with the thought of bells nestled inside bells nestled inside bells... oh, and the bird calls and sounds of falling fruits right at the close of the track.
