Great Circles Residency: Ashen Vanity w/ Furtive

Glad to share with you the first volume of our new mix series, lazed. A monthly rendez-vous imagined as a new playground of musical expression focused on listening music. 

For this first episode, we're glad to welcome the artist Elvira. Inspired by her different sound practices in the performing arts and the electro-acoustic environment, she owns a very singular take on electronic music that is slowly making its way to ears around Europe. 

Elvira: « I imagined a cockroach wandering in a desert, the sun hitting hard causing dehydration leading to hallucinations. Sometimes voices appear, other times insects squeak. At some point the cockroach is tormented cus it falls on his back and is incapable of turning around. »

London based @striations-night co-founder, @ryokurashina provides this incredibly sultry and hypnotic journey through dub-infused rhythms for our 22nd mixtape. Moving seamlessly through genres, energies & tempos, this is a very very enjoyable listen.

I got the idea to record the mix after running a few of the @striations-night nights. I wanted it to represent all the different energies, genres and tempos which we go through during one of our nights. It’s quite hypnotic yet has a lot of that deep, danceable energy you get from sub-bass heavy music.

There’s lots of tracks inside that I play out quite regularly but it’s the first time I’ve put them all together in the way that I did. It was definitely tricky to get the balance right at times, but I’m really happy with the mix and glad it’s out on a great platform!

A lot of influence for sure comes from running the @striations-night nights. Hearing lots of great artists you admire play out, and getting to test ideas on a semi-regular basis really helps you to learn what you like. 

I’ve also put a lot of music made by friends in this mix as well. Knowing the person who made the track definitely helps make the mix feel more personal, and it’s something I always try to build into my mixes.

I started the night with a couple of friends (big up Rob and Elspeth) back in 2022 because we weren’t seeing the artists we wanted to see in a venue that we liked. Spanners was still fairly new back then and we loved the space so we went for it. Mary and Tobs who run it are the best and they’ve always been very welcoming. You can tell they really care which makes a big difference!

In terms of curation we try to keep it quite organic. We book (mostly) local artists who we really like and think complement each other nicely. I think a lot of it’s about helping the artists feel relaxed and free to explore their sound when they get on the decks.

Hard to pin down but I really like IFS MA - Enshooritz & the unreleased Ikävä Pii track I’ve put in the mix. Both oddball tracks that are quite different but work really well together.

𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐱?
Maybe one of the @loop_lf mixes on NTS. I really love the multiple tempos and genres that flow effortlessly. Have been chasing that sound ever since.

@miellllllll - A deeply personal selector - with radars for the wacky, the moody and the lowercase - mi-el’s style is a deft balancing act, from sung soundscapes and explorations of her heritage to contemporary bass, electro, and vanguard electronics. 

Those who’ve caught her live will know the former MOT booker and now NTS resident is apt to blur the thinning line between selector and sound artist, having torn up countless great nights, venues and festivals in just a few years: dare we say Panorama Bar, Field Manuevers, Boiler Room, De School, Big Dyke Energy and FOLD. It’s folk wisdom, almost a given at this point, that mi-el is killing it.

What's the vibe?
I didn't manage to record any of my sets closing for BDE,  so I wanted pay a little homage to those parties and all those hours of playing channelling my hottest sexiest horniest self.

Furtive is a full-gonzo rave conjurer and relentless creative tinkerer, intractably committed to the rave as a Philadelphia-based producer, DJ, underground event organizer, and dancer. A shifting sonic chameleon, Furtive brings a scintillating, sentimental, and psychedelic touch to their artistry, rooted in wormhole-traversing technoid propulsion and dependably delivering riotous, slack-jawed whiplash moments of the delightfully unexpected. Their many polished and focused genre-spanning productions are informed by over thirteen years of experience in the studio, yielding a rich selection of tracks across their self-released discography, vinyl pressings, and contributions to compilations. A veritable product of the contemporary American underground, Furtive cut their teeth as a DJ and DIY event organizer in Washington, DC’s warehouses, where they once played a variety of turnkey roles in putting on some of the District’s more proper techno parties. Furtive co-founded and co-runs Bounce House, an intimate, blossoming off-the-books venue in Philly where they regularly hold court as a resident. Furtive is on broadcast monthly through Ashen Vanity, a radio residency at Philadelphia’s indispensable cultural mainstay Great Circles. As a DJ, Furtive has played hallowed halls (recently rampaging at Nowadays and Basement), dingy holes, roaring renegades, broadcast booths, and festivals (The Great Beyond '23, '24, and headlining in '25, Honcho Campout '24) - always with eclectic selections and a steadfast focus on pacing and dynamics while regularly jumping genres to build moving and impactful sets, often alongside internationally celebrated, no-nonsense acts.
