As a long-time events & community organizer, Malzof is also well-known for their public art, projection art/installations and musical output.

Sweet Abyss resident Malzof has been DJing for a decade, playing their own signature style of transgender dance music. As a life-long music collector, their sound archives go deep. Heavily influenced by IDM, Ambient, experimental music, breaks, sampling, and dance music of all kinds, they are not afraid to make it blend. They see DJing as an extension of all the work they do- to bring people together, to encourage moments of release and joy, and to support people in showing up in their true expressions as resistance against hegemony.

You may have heard Malzof play a freaky downtempo set at last year's Sploosh alongside Yessi, or perhaps somewhere across the region - from just about everywhere in Pittsburgh to Philly, NYC, Ithaca, Rochester, Montreal, Detroit or on your radio waves across the world. Malzof brings their creative vision and multimedia art practice into the ways they share sound.

Sonic Note from Matt W | 

This mix arrives from an alternate reality; one in which my father went further left on the dial while carpooling my sister and I to school, or stayed up a little later tuned into FM radio. Or maybe if our family had lived in Canada (see Scott Merritt and Jane Sieberry inclusions).


My father started his career in music as a DJ at a classic rock station in Madison, Wisconsin, eventually moving into ad sales and then management.  Music was always around, and at the time, what was making its way to radio, and more visibly to MTV, was sophisticated. Career rockers like Robert Palmer and Lindsey Buckingham were turning out artistically, and musically, adventurous hits, unimaginable in today’s pop scenery. 

I bought my father Kate Bush’s The Sensual World for the  holidays one year, at his request, and that became what filled our family’s house with sound until he moved on to the next album.    

For every Palmer, Buckingham, and even Bush, there were, of course, thousands of other musicians maneuvering their way through the landscape of the music industry. Many of the artists featured on this mix had amazing careers; there’s nothing too  obscure or abstract here. 

For whatever formulas these artists may or may not have been following, there is a real sense of musicality, and a devotion to the craft of songwriting.

So, this one is for my dad, and hopefully, in some subliminal way, for my kids. They would might say they hate what they’re hearing, but I have a feeling a (healthy) connection to said craft will form when they hear this in the car, at home, etc.
